The sound effect from TOS, and the early TNG episodes is the best. Even when they updated the visual, they should have kept that same sound effect.
The photon torpedo sound used in TOS .. was made by recording a steel wound tension wire hit with another piece of metal , screwdriver, etc.... recorded and then slowed down to a sweet spot. First used in War of the Worlds , it was the sound from the green lit manta wing tips, aka, the skeleton ray .... It was later tweaked for Robinson Caruso on Mars .... After that Star Trek TOS ... ! Then reused again, by this time highly modified , George Lucas still wanted a physical recording of that sound and it appears throughout Star Wars in all kinds of places ...! Photons peaked for me in the period of the OS movies starting with Wrath of Khan. The photons during that time had that wonderful brighter core surrounded by a strobe effect, and they hit hard. They later became less visually interesting and lost their power. By TNG, they were being fired in salvos that often did little other than reduce the enemy shields by a few percent.
The TOS photon torpedo sound effect was used a lot in the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon, as well.
My favorite sound effects for torpedoes are TOS and quantum torpedos.

I don't understand why Paramount did not delay the production of Star Trek V when it became apparent that Bran Ferran's firm was no where near up for the challenge. The film, as originally envisioned by Shatner would have been much better. Even TNG's in house effects would have been better than what was produced. V wold have done better at the box office too with a Christmas 1989 release instead of trying to compete in the greatest Summer season of all time. I have to re-read Shatner's book to see if there is a reason why Paramount simply didn't wait until ILM or another reputable effects house was available.
I know i'm a nerd but I always noticed that the Klingon Torpedoes were white in Star Trek #3 but red in Star trek #5 and #6
I will never understand why the so called 'last resort' weapon that's meant to be their strongest choice, is shown to be so weak. Or why in an IP with such weapons, why no one thought point defence phasers would be a good idea. Or even why not all torps are fully tracking and lock on to targets.

Torpedoes are ANTIMATTER. Think about it! It's so damn stupid that an antimatter explosion on shields doesn't destroy a ship; And in one episode of Discovery, Pike's Enterprise gets an enemy torpedo through it's hull, unexploded, and a simple blast door stops the entire ship from exploding. I'm losing trust in antimatter, I've got to tell you! LOL

@@Doesntcompute2k Its sort of consistent, at least with legacy Star Trek. I mean, the shields allow them to weather ion storms and close proximity to stars. At a certainly level, shields should protect them from matter-antimatter weapons, at least for a while. The Disco Pike Enterprise example doesn't make sense to me, though. Shields were not involved at all in that instance. The warhead was inside the ship with only one blast door. And that blast door had a window!

Trek ships are also shown to be VERY susceptible to EM interference, like it's the MOST common thing to disable sensors/transporters in the show. I mean they are meant to be super advanced to the point they can make ships that do not need; reaction engines, food/water/fuel supplies or any form of armour.
