    Considering the technical and budgetary limitations of 1966, the original effects hold up surprisingly well against the new ones. I do like the modernization of the effects--they're cleaner, clearer, and usually more interesting, but the original effects shouldn't ever be lost or forgotten.

    I won't lie, the original shuttle launch looks better than the CGI version.

    Especially the jettison of fuel. That's the way it would look in space. The new version is overdone and cartoonish. Too bright and colorful. Not to mention the unrealistic curving trail. That's one small planet then!

    I just happened to watch this tonight. Well part of it. I’ve seen it before. Didn’t realize they changed it. I like the original better.

    After watching the original effects for all these years, it was actually disturbing to see the CGI on the MeTV broadcasts. What's next, making "improvements" to some da Vinci paintings??

    Your right,, so much work and time went into making these and it's part of Trek history... I like the old effects too... On the DVD,, you can toggle over the to the old effects... there is both the new and old on the Remastered Blu rays.... Mike

    Hate to admit it, but the original shuttle craft launch looks more real than the new CGI effects. Cheers to the old special effects masters.

    It's not that the CGI is bad ( it's not great). It's the fact that it doesn't fit the aesthetic of the show in the slightest It looks like it's from an old PC game. Which clashes so badly with the look and feel of a quintessentially 1960's TV show. They did the same thing to Red Dwarf and it looks terrible compared to the model work they did

    Yeah, the CGI shots are much more visually appealing and interesting than the old effects... the problem is the transitions between the live action and CGI are so jarring. live action looks much fuzzier and softer compared to the sharpness of the CGI. maybe there is a resolution difference. if so that would have been an easy fix to downgrade the resolution of the CGI a bit, not sure why CBS wouldn't do that.

    I think that I like all of the CGI (especially the planet detail and the color correction between the planets versus the ship) but the shuttle leaving and entering the bay was better in the practical version!

    95 percent of the remastered fx in the series are pretty well done and fit in fairly well with the original aesthetic. For some reason THIS episode looks very CG, especially the jettisoned fuel and the Galileo in space. Even the Enterprise looks more CG than other episodes. Was this the first one they remastered?

    In the original version Murasaki 312 just looks like glowing green dye dropped in water. In the CGI version it looks more like a quasar with a nebula around it.

  • @kevinslater4126
    @kevinslater4126 Жыл бұрын

    Quasars were not known at the time of this episode. We had no idea they were black holes with jets until much later and in fact the jets of supermassive black holes which exist in the hearts of galaxies. This 'quasar like object' therefore would be what's called a 'microquasar' which do, in fact, exist and is good science. The CGI effect is gorgeous of what a microquasar should look like. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microquasar

    I think we're to the point now where they may be able to take the original and just tweak that with CGI instead of straight-up adding new scenes. That would be way better imo. Practical effects with a CGI boost is usually really nice.

    They oops'd when they did the launch sequence. At 0:56, as the shuttlecraft was turning into position, we see the shuttlecraft Columbus in the foreground. At 1:26 when the Galelio was emerging from the Enterprise, there was no Columbus in the open bay.

    Did they make any change to the mist that was superimposed over what would have been a shot of the dead crewman with a spear in his back? (about 15 minutes in) And the phaser shots in the same shot...

    I actually HATE the remastered version! You have no idea how PISSED OFF I am that this MASTERPIECE has been MOLESTED! The remastered effects look SO MUCH MORE FAKE than the Original! I LOVE the effects of the original! When this crap happens the company should sell dvds of the ORIGINAL and the Remastered version. I am FUMING mad about this! Same thing with Star Wars! RIDICULOUS! I'm a major Trekkie and I feel like I'm watching a cheap knock off that some young folks changed because they're so into CGI that they couldn't appreciate the AMAZING BEAUTY of the original! This trend of "remastering" (which has completely changed since remastering FIRST began) is getting out of hand! Companies should only be remastering in the way that they are sharpening the images and the audio and not COMPLETELY CHANGING scenes into something else!
