Star Trek Strange New Worlds 2.05 "Charades" Review - Unexpected!
Ойын-сауық
Star Trek Strange New Worlds returns with its latest episode, Charades. Shenanigans ensue when Spock loses his Vulcan side and becomes fully human. Of course, a lot is going on in a whimsical episode with some dramatic implications that may effect the rest of the season (or maybe not). We also see Captain Pike cooking stuff and that's always fun.
Thanks Paramount Studios for the review screener for the first six episodes of the season. It was much appreciated! :)

I think it is realistic for Spock to hide it from T'pring as a Human. And it felt realistic that T'pring would feel betrayed. Spock did involve everyone on the ship except her.

Except that T'pring was the only person on the ship that had an impending mind meld with her mother. So to me, it makes perfect sense that Spock wouldn't tell her. It'd be kind of tough for T'pring to hide the fact that Spock was now fully human from her mom when she's sharing her mind with her.
Spock's reaction to bacon is very relatable.

Phenomenal episode with outstanding performances by Jenn Bush and Ethan Peck.

Agreed!
Such a fun episode. There were multiple times that I laughed out loud, especially Spock's "Don't test me, Kirk. I will BREAK you!". Ethan Peck is a treasure

I loved that. Such a good scene. Just watching Kirk being a sloppy mess😂
Nice catch on Jadzia's having a similar situation. T'pring's mom was doing amazing work making us not like her.

Definitely was. Extremely reminiscent.
Hey Tots! Another silly episode, but we had some fun with it. Curious to hear what everyone thinks about this one. As usual, please share, smash that like button if you're here. The algorithm has hated me lately and could appreciate all the support! - Mr. Tot

The ending makes perfect sense if you understand the theme of the episode, which is honesty. At the beginning of the episode, Spock can’t be honest with Chapel about his feelings for her. After the shuttle accident, Spock can’t be honest with T’Pring or her parents about what happened to him. Chapel bombs her interview because the interviewer thinks she was being misleading on her application. T’Pring’s dad can’t be honest with his wife and admit he enjoys the food Pike prepared. Amanda can’t show how painful it is to hold a teapot. Everyone is lying because they’re worried about the consequences if the truth were to come out. If there’s a message being conveyed here, it’s that you should just be honest and let the chips fall where they may, a message conveyed by the aliens who agree to give Chapel the cure for Spock, but only after she admits the truth. Spock confesses to T’Pring’s family, not because he got caught, but because he didn’t want to lie anymore. Amanda shares a memory with Spock to show how painful it’s been for her to live on Vulcan. And finally Spock and Chapel admit how they feel about each other. It isn’t done just to satisfy the Spock/Chapel shippers. It’s the whole point of the episode. It might feel like the ending undoes everything that came before. But that’s only if you think the goal of the episode was to preserve Spock and T’Pring’s relationship. It wasn’t. That relationship was already doomed. I’m not referring to what happens in TOS. It was doomed because Spock had feelings for someone else and then lied to his fiancé about his accident.

Exactly! This whole episode I was noticing how everyone was being deceptive or lying
Going to need so much Beanie Spock Fan Art
This episode was good fun!
Everytime T'Pril was entering a scene or being mad then music from Amok Time was playing. I fucking laughed everytime.

It really did. The show uses music a lot like TOS (probably homaging it, surely)
The important piece no one seems to mention is the real prejudice from the Vulcans towards his mother as a human, and towards himself for being half human, was something Spock really seems to recognize in this episode... reason enough to want to end the engagement imo

Ethan Peck as human Spock was a treat!
I do like Spock and Chapel. Young Spock makes more mistakes than older Spock.

Could perhaps explain why he is so wise.
The Menagerie is the ultimate TOS lost love episode!! SNW can do all the love and loss it wants to. We know how tragic stuff becomes for so many of them in 8 years or so. I was utterly blown away by the courtroom episode, but all this love stuff is so great and such a refreshing antidote to the pain and loss of Discovery. I mean, Mirror Burnham had been groomed as a teen by Mirror Lorca to kill her adoptive mother. Wouldn't it have been great if some young crewman/woman saw Captain Killy and they made out behind the espresso machine? No. Pour it on. Give me all the feels. That iPad call to prime-Kirk and Laan's tears were heartbreaking and exquisite.

That’s fair, but I just feel it’s a theme played too often. But I digress. I’m glad others are enjoying it!
Oh dang, you are right! They are using the "love lost" trope a lot.

This was one step away from 'slap-stick' comedy! It was hilarious! Everything worked...all in 'canon-context'. I did expect that Spock was going to 'cut loose' and raise hell with T'pring's mother.
That shuttle is TOO BIG inside. I laughed out loud

Hey Arnold! Thanks for sharing 😆🤣
This gets an A for me.
As great as I think it is that Paramount is trying to give us all a replacement for the sorely missed "Orville", I wouldn't mind if they produced a new Star Trek series someday....

I do really miss The Orville.
The Spock we know will never cheat on her Partner. Modern writer have no morals hence they love to spoil everything. Vulcan's don't work away from their relationship due to their feelings. This writters know knowing about Trek.
I hated the last scene and it has nothing to do with cannon, as SNW isn't TOS. People who hate modern star trek because of cannon is a really weak excuses, as TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise also mess with cannon within their own show. The reason I didn't like this episode is basically Spock and T'Pring didn't breakup, so I guess cheating is fine. I don't mind if Spock and Chapel get into a relationship as SNW isn't TOS. Like most reviews never mention (except yourselves) the cheating part. Another reason is if they did break up (whick I don't think they did). Spock and Chapel got together the same day, another terrible message. It's telling people once you break up it is ok to get with someone else straight away. Meaning did Spock ever care for T'Pring by the way in Catholic. I wonder will this become another Ross/Rachael type of relationship. The only reason I gave this episode 3/10 is because of Pike and Amanda. I also subscribed to your channel.

Good point to mention Ross and Rachel. This silly episode was more like an episode of Friends than Star Trek.

Thank you for the wonderful response. I think there is a lot of merit to what you’re saying. The canon is totally messed up and I could honestly complain about it for forever. Thank you for subscribing. It really means a lot

There's four times too much soap opera romance, it makes it a waste of time to watch, besides they're never going bleu, why don't give us more science romance.

I think part of the problem this season is good stories ruined by generic writing. It once again falls back to the love trope and far too often.

@@NaterTot It's always part of what kills the franchise off, maggots from within the show and no thinking about science at all.
