I dont have 4 K set up. are the Blu-ray a good upgrade from the 09 Blu-ray ?

This set is hard to get but after several attempts I got mine at best buy for 82 bucks. Omg your right. The film grain in most 4k movies makes the movie look like it was intended to be shown in theaters. This set is terrific. Box art and everything. I wish they did a little more with the cases, like include a poster, lobby cards or a book. But the case art and movies are what counts. Anyone that complains that this set isn't a homerun is not Logical.....lol

I discovered your channel with your Dune '84 4k review. I really enjoyed it. I have to say your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorites for physical media reviews.:)

I got the set as well and when I compared them to the last BluRay's of the films released I could see the improvement on the 4K disks and even on the standard blurays. Really glad I decided to get this set, thanks for the review and the side by side comparisons!

The Director's Cut of Star Trek the Motion Picture is Fantastic. It's the only one remixed in Atmos. You've never heard Jerry Goldsmiths score so clear and dynamic as if you were there when it was being recorded. The scanned Doug Trumbull's 65mm effects work at 8K resolution, they even scanned the Vistavision work of John Dykstra at 6k. While because it was the Oneg of the 65 and it had very fine grain they still did a DNR pass. Wish they hadn't but it didn't destroy the work.

I agree on The Voyage Home! It has a nice comedic quality while retaining the dignity of the characters (unlike the over-the-top, campy Final Frontier). Don Peterman's available-light cinematography lends a lot of realism and Leonard Rosenman's score lends a different, star-studded, elegant musical tone than Goldsmith's and Horner's equally fine music in the previous Trek films.

I thought the same, Voyage Home was such a great addition to the original crews movie slate. I feel it fleshed out the characters so much better and added some much needed humor without being campy. I also remember watching it in theaters and thinking wow it’s awesome they have a Klingon Bird of Prey. I enjoy all the Star Trek movies on different levels but there is something special about voyage home. Did you like Star Trek The motion picture? Thanks for your support.

It’s a very interesting release because of how differently this 4K actually looks over the old previous Blu Ray releases. I love it when a favorite movie of mine gets a new 4K Scan & Restoration, so these were exciting! If you have any forums or groups you are in, please share these videos that helps out a lot. Excellent review after an actual detailed analysis + to the point professional..... no ranting. PS: Before watiching this review, after watiching the 4k release, I started to feel that either my 4K player or my HDMI cable had gone bad due to the visible grain on screen. Here it is clearly mentioned to be film grain retained for the sake of sharp and light detail rather than blurring or darkening the video to hide it. Thanks a ton.

Will you be doing a review of the new Star Trek TOS steelbooks? I am dying to get them but just want to know if there is any difference besides just being in steelbooks .

Great review, one thing I have an issue with, is that with these older Sci Fi movies (Trek and Wars) and shows (BSG) being remastered at put on Bluray or 4k, is that you can see most of the matt lines in the space scenes, it's not horrible, but I wish they would just remove them. I look forward to seeing more of your reviews. I hope one day like you. they clean up and remaster DS9 and Voyager for Bluray.

I'm so in for buying TMP-DE, II, III, IV and VI on 4K when they're released individually.

It will most likely be quite a while before they are released individually because they are wanting these to be collectors sets. So my guess is that it will be at least another year or more before they Star releasing them individually. Also if you take the price of this Complete set of 4 it’s less expensive to buy this set now then possibly buying them individually on 4K in a few years at 25 dollars each for all 4 movies individually 100 total vs 77 now. So I don’t know that waiting really helps you out any in this instance. I am not trying to make things hard for you, just trying to share how they are planning on releasing these so you don’t wait thinking it’s going to cheaper when it might not be. Hope this helps you.

Can you find out if MASH 4077 tv series will be on UHD? It was filmed in 35mm

it is likely never going to even be on Blu-Ray due to Disney. They enjoy the streaming revenue too much. Trust me I know, I'd love a Blu-ray of the remastered to show my mom who loved the show, Disney is terrible.

Used your link & purchased. My only fear is that they do totally new restorations as they are doing for The Motion Picture & I'll have to buy again.

So it’s not a new restoration of the theatrical version of the motion picture. The new restoration that’s coming out sometime in 2022 is only the Directors Cut so 2 different versions of the film. They are not redoing the theatrical cut again that restoration is already done and included in this set, so you don’t have to worry about double dipping for the same cut of the film twice. I am very happy my review helped you decide on buying this 4K set, you will notice when you get your copy to watch that it’s a big upgrade and has never looked as good as it does now. Great Review was going to wait for the price to drop because I thought the blu-ray disc were the same as the prev released and also I want the other 2 movies but based on this review I may need to rethink that. Any word on I dream of Jeannie yet? Did you get a review copy yet?

Yah, I wondered the same thing until I got this set and started digging into it. As you can see in my Image Comparisons there are some drastic changes that really change the overall look of each film for the better. It’s surprised me how much had actually been changed for the better from the older previous Blu Ray releases. It was a very worthwhile upgrade and is not something you should wait too long to pick up, because of all the delays and cancellations of releases due to all the manufacturing issues these sets are getting harder and harder to keep in stock for companies or for us to find. That’s one of the big reasons I have been trying not to wait to long when buying these new sets because of what I keep seeing them going for not long after release day on all these used websites lol…. I don’t like to pay aftermarket prices they are always sooo expensive. Did you notice how drastically these look different in the image Comparison?

@@kenpope5798 yah, I have stopped really caring or reporting about the I Dream of Jeannie Blu Ray Set now, because it’s now been delayed wayyyy too many times. To be honest how the whole release has been handled has really gotten ridiculous.

This was $49.99 during Black Friday

I wish they would have brought out the first 6 movies, I've checked out my blu-ray movie collection and I now think it looks terrible. Great review.

I think it was particularly Star Trek IV where it was extremly grainy in some scenes. Sorry, that's too much grain. And it was a later movie. Especially did I notice in San Francisco scenes. The scene you compared above was a good one too. I didn't even think about it in the other 3 movies. I felt like for Star Trek IV that I was just watching an Upscaled movie. Not 4K.

4k pop's way more.

I agree, it had a great Dolby Vision HDR representation overall. I really enjoyed the new more natural color tones back to the way they were supposed to be originally. Thanks for sharing.

You mention the scan is 2160 that’s not 4K or did I miss something?

So 2160p is 4K UltraHD, that’s why I explain this is not an upscaled 4K but is a true Native 2160p 4K UltraHD Blu Ray Release. So it’s the highest quality that has existed for these Star Trek Movies and they look great. I am guessing based on your comments it seems you didn’t know native 4K releases are 2160p. I don't have 4K equipment so I don't know about this. Are the regular bluray discs in this set better quality then the last bluray release? Not really clear on that from your review. BTW You and I are on the same page when it comes to the Trek movies. Motion Picture is also my least favorite but I'd rather watch the theater release over the extra footage version because it's less boring. LOL Also Voyage Home is also my favorite! My fond memory of it was when I was in Collage and it premiered in the theater. I decided at the last minute to ditch a history class to go see it. Anyway, I get to the theater, buy my ticket and popcorn and get to my seat, A few seconds my sister sits next to me and we were shocked see each other. SIS: "What are you doing here?" ME: "I ditched school to see this. What's your excuse sis?" SIS: "I ditched my work and called in sick to see this." LOL

I don't have a 4k TV yet either but when my Blu Ray player died I replaced it with a LG 4k player and you can use it with a 1080p tv. It will show the 4k discs in 1080p and look great.

I put a pinned post at the top of these comments section right after I posted this review explaining more about what I was talking about with the regular Blu Rays in this set having these new remasters on those discs too. So if you buy this set and don’t have 4K yet you will still get to enjoy the new remastered look of these films just in 1080p on the Blu Rays. So it’s definitely worth the upgrade even for just the Blu Rays kn this set because you still get all the new corrected colors and other changes. So many of us grew up with Star Trek it seems and really enjoyed them growing up. These we’re such fun action adventure movies without all the stuff they add into movies these days. That’s why I love classic films, especially Star Trek lol!!! Are you now planning to pick up this Star Trek Set?

Not as much as a wow factor like the next generation 4k vs the blu ray had. At a guess that's because tng was made more updated on better new camera's and the original films was made older for its time

I'm probably being harsh but in my opinion someone calling themselves a cinephile while at the same time being a grain hater and preferring DNR is a bit of an oxymoron. It just doesn't make any sense. Personally I LOVE film grain and hate DNR with a passion unless it's used for VERY GOOD reason and with great care and subtlety. Anyway sorry ...rant over.... It's a bugbear of mine what can I say 😛. So I prefer Wrath of Khan and then probably Voyage Home but I do still have a soft spot for The Motion Picture and probably like Search For Spock last. However I enjoy them all immensely so it's not like I dislike the lower ranked ones. My early memories of Star Trek were visiting my dad every second weekend during the late 70s/early 80s (parents divorced when I was very young) and watching the original Star Trek series on TV as a Saturday afternoon re-run and then of course eventually The Motion Picture and beyond came out and I got into those before being hooked on The Next Generation. I cannot recall seeing the first 3 films in the cinema but I MAY have seen 4 and 5. I definitely remember seeing ST 6 Undiscovered Country in the cinema and saw all of the TNG films in the cinema. As much as I love TNG though I much prefer the original series and films (and characters). Never really thought the original Blu ray set was that great TBH (for the films, the Blu ray set of ST TOS looks fantastic!). The films always seemed a bit muddy and washed out to my eyes so I'm very excited to see those side by side comparisons and actually am now really keen to get this set as it looks amazing! Great in depth review and really enjoyed it. Now we just need the director's cut of the Motion Picture on Blu ray and/or 4k !

The top of your comments confused me at first, I had to read it like 4 times to get what you were trying to say lol!!! I at first thought you were attacking me lol….. but it didn’t make sense, because I clearly educate everyone on why film grain is a good thing. So after reading it a few times I got what you meant to say & were trying to say,,,,, basically you are saying that some other people in the world don’t understand why the film grain is such a good thing. So you were agreeing with me, it’s just worded so at first it sounds like you are attacking me lol!!!! Man I said lol a lot, I am just trying to explain my initial confusion at your beginning statements in your comments. But yes there are too many times that I hear complaints about film grain when for these older films that’s actually a good thing when scanned in 4K and restored correctly. That’s what I have been trying to share for years on my channel so folks understand better why these restorations are so important. I agree that the Original Crew is my favorite Star Trek movies, though TNG is my favorite tv series. Comparing all the Next Generation movies First Contact is my favorite of those sets of films by far, I love the Borg. I am glad you are excited for this set because of my review. @@InSearchofPhysicalMedia have to make sure I keep you on your toes with my comments lol 😁. Sorry for wording it so confusingly but you got there in the end and no was definitely not attacking you. I totally agree with your positive thoughts on film grain and comments that DNR makes things waxy. I just see a lot of comments from people claiming to be cinephiles who also complain about film grain and want everything to look new and "fresh" which (particularly for older stuff shot on film) I find to be quite a strange stance. I probably enjoy TOS more than TNG for both movies and the show but don't get me wrong ... I still love TNG as well. Agree the Borg are cool and First Contact is definitely one of the great Star Trek films. I was not overly surprised at the difference highlighted in your review between the old Blu rays and the new 4k as I have been collecting 4k for long enough now to know how significantly fantastic the 4k upgrade can be ... IF DONE RIGHT. Unfortunately it isn't always done right so for me your review was more about confirming that it WAS done right and I can finally get to see these Star Trek films in all their glory and with their original artistic intent restored so we can enjoy them as we should be able to. You do some of the best physical media reviews on KZread and really love your work. I don't get through your content as quickly as I'd like as I don't get a lot of free time but definitely try and check your vids out as often as possible and will slowly go through your back catalog as time permits. The changes were obviously for the better to restore it correctly but I did think in my opinion they were drastic over the old Blu ray releases from years back. Also to be honest I was hoping there was enough changes to be worth the upgrade and I am happy this was a worthy upgrade. It’s great you are excited to own & watch these films now. @@InSearchofPhysicalMedia yes a but like when Blu ray first came out I think the early 4k releases were hit and miss. Some seemed like barely upgrades over Blu ray, especially some of the newer Blu ray which has already looked quite good. But it seems they have managed to master HDR and 4k restorations now and we are starting to see some amazing stuff xome out. I can't imagine we would need any other home formats beyond this unless it was literally a 3d hologram holodeck type arrangement! I can't imagine I'd bother moving to 8k or that this would even become a thing for the home format. You'd get to the point where it would be detrimental particularly for older films where even on 4k some stuff stands out too much (like The Wizard of Oz) in terms of make up and sets. Fortunately HDR can somewhat counter that. But I think on 8K it would be pointless. Plus 4k has taken so long to roll out and is still pretty niche to be honest and small share of the physical media market. 4k streaming is starting to take off and that also took ages but I don't imagine 8k streaming will happen anytime soon (not to mention the ridiculous costs of 8k TVs which I doubt too many people own). You really need a massive screen to get much benefit from 8k in my opinion anyway. I think we are seeing the physical media market move more towards niche collectors like us and I think most of us have our hands full buying the media and are in no rush to move to investing in equipment over and above our current 2k/4k setups. I could be wrong but these are my observations and conclusions. I love 4k but have no interest or excitement about 8k or beyond. If I can jump into my movie holodeck style well...then I'll be excited ! 😁

The only grudge I have...i am a sucker for individual cases...and I can see the Blu-rays are available separately with beautiful covers...but the 4K not.
