Beckett managed to turn the tables on Locarno and Nova Fleet… without firing a single shot. That definitely helped her mother out in that she didn’t get chewed out for her actions on top of opening a dialogue with Orion. And that line from Beckett before the ending: “I feel like I’m really am back for the first time in a while.” That stuck with me, as did her declaration that she’ll try to avoid self-sabotage in the future. She’s finally taking steps towards her future, having made peace with Sito’s death. And quite possibly, we will see a slow return of the idealistic, wide-eyed person that she used to be, before Sito’s death and the Dominion War broke her down. But my heart definitely broke with Tendi’s departure. But I just know that she won’t be gone for long.

The Boimler/Rutherford "he looks like Tom Paris" bit was hilarious. But I lost it when they re-did the TwinTwain bit and then at the end, they still don't like each other and are only civil when Twin Twaining. I thought the hiding in the asteroids was a nod to the asteroid scene from Empire Strikes Back - especially with the Romulan ship decloaking which is a similar sort of way Boba Fett hides in the junk that's dumped by the Star Destroyer.

Captain Freeman's speech to the crew that she was flouting Star Fleet orders to go after Mariner, and every single crew member rallying behind her; I loved that moment so much. That scene brought out so many things. 1) Freeman pulled the kind of lower deck allegiance that Lacarno was only pandering to. 2) It showed us exactly where Mariner got her rebellious streak. 3) It demonstrated how any character of any rank can be the focal point of a scene, but the spirit of the scene is "Lower Decks".

  • @AdamEspersona

22:56 Boimler was trusting his crew knew what to do. He didn’t need to manage them or do more so than just bark orders. He did nothing himself but lead. That’s how I read the scene. The Cerritos was yet another starship manned entirely by lower Deckers. All of the bridge crew went on the Captains yacht. Making the Cerritos on par with the ships of Nova Fleet. It’s amazing.

It's basically a synthesis of "Every Ferengi has his price" and "Loyalty seldom comes cheap". While it can certainly be spun in a pro-worker way, it's just as much a warning to bosses to stay ahead of their competition. Just like many other Rules of Acquisition, it reifies the duality of the worker-boss relationship - simultaneously presenting as tips for climbing the business ladder for underlings, and as tips for repressing workers for the bosses. They've certainly never shied-away from admitting the exploitative nature of their business dealings! "We don't want to end the exploitation, we want to become the exploiters"; after all. Quark never claims everyone gets a fair deal, he says "you have to assume the other guy is swindling you". Zek proudly proclaimed, at a meeting of his top financial advisors, that they don't intend to keep-up their end of the contract with Gamma Quadrant trading partners even briefly.

Meaning that due to that episode’s events, she and Sito ended up in the same grade. Absolutely my favorite LD finale... Among a lot of big things in this episode, Rutherford and Boimler's back and for about Locarno looks similar to Tom Paris was hilarious to me. That approach of "nothing is saint and let's have fun" is for me Lower Deck's important character trait.

the i feel the captain want her A team to rescue her daughter so she took all the high rank officers, the reaosn why she choose Boimler is because the mission itself for him was very simple, he just need to be sure the big orion ship hit the shield, but the Captain also need to be sure that the person in charge would follow the mission not matter what, not even if Start Fleet high command tell them to stop. Boimler is Mariner's best friend, the captain know that nothing would stop him

What really annoys me about Starfleet writers is the fact that so many characters are allowed to bypass the academy, and lower ranks like Kirk in 2009, Seven and Picard's son. About Boimler being in command, this has precedent. Ignoring silliness if Tilly as first officer, leaving a Lt JG command was lifted directly from TNG. In the Arsenal of Freedom, Picard specifically leaves Geordi, who as a Lt JG and at the helm, in command. It even causes friction with the chief engineer. Boimler was at the helm and was left in charge by Freeman. Keep in mind that she also wanted someone that would surprise Command when they tried to order them to turn around.

They even lifted whole musical stings and shot compositions straight from Wrath of Khan, which I absolutely loved. So many great character moments, too, with T'Lynn leaving her old boss on read, the return of Twaining, Billups standing up for the Cerritos, Freeman rallying everyone behind her to save Mariner, the Tom Paris conversation… ah, so good. And I really just want to know what Tendi's going to get up to next season, because she definitely seems to have some kind of ulterior motive being hinted at in that final shot of her.

Aw man this was a great if bittersweet finale that did what a good season finale did by calling back, continuing, and wrapping up earlier season plot points. Really does feel like the end yet beginning with a number of plot and character moments. As far as finales go this can easily be a contender for LD's best one I think. Am mixed on Locarno's full turn to villainy. On paper his motivation makes sense but the fact is that he got into this situation because of his own ego and fault for getting Cadet Albert killed. Then again I suppose his motivation makes sense to himself like many villains. Him getting his own planet named after him and getting to perform the starburst in that explosion is fittingly poetically iffy and questionably validating. Wheaton returning as Wes in the flashback was great, but the retired Shannon Fill briefly returning to reprise Sito was completely unexpected.

Then Captain Freeman goes rogue and explicitly tells her crew she is doing so, what the consequences for assisting her will be, and offers to let them leave.

Lower Decks is such a lovingly and masterfully crafted show. Under the guise of parody it really brings the Trek universe down to "Earth.". For decades we see the bombastic and idealistic side of Starfleet, of how we want to be. Lower Decks is much more grounded to how us, as 21st century humans, would most likely behave in space. Hard to not chant "Lower Decks" along with our favorite crew!

One little thing we got right up front is Jerry O'Connell reviving the classic "And now the conclusion" voice-over. I loved that so much, and that they chose him to do it. I loved this episode a ton, for all the reasons Jessie talks about here. A lot of character moments felt earned. There were plenty of thrilling action sequences that all served a purpose in driving the plot forward. Seeing the Cerritos actually using its tractor beam for a massive haul was a long-overdue treat, as was the captain's yacht. Was disappointed we didn't get a scene resolving the stranded crews' storyline from last episode. So much time was spent building up to the moment Mariner and Tendi unite them, it doesn't feel like we got enough payoff for it. Ma'ah doesn't even get a mention in this episode, from what I could tell.
