    The Prime Directive was created after the events in the TV Show, Star Trek: Enterprise which came out between 2001-2005. In that series, the Federation didn’t exist yet. It takes place 100 years before Kirk and Spock even existed. Many civilizations and societies were negatively affected from Starfleet’s interference throughout that series. Between the Enterprise show, and the TOS series is when the Federation and the Prime Directive was born. So the Prime Directive is the values and ideals that they sworn to protect and uphold. The Augments were also from a time that took place during the Enterprise series called the Eugenics War where superhuman beings were trying to take over as they had superior strength, tactical skills and heightened intelligence. It was a very intense storyline. If you ever watch any of the series, you can start from any of them and still understand what’s going on since all of them bring something different to the franchise.

    So fascinating seeing someone watch these movies with no previous "Star Trek" knowledge. It makes sense to watch the Abrams movies as it's an alternate time line but there's so much lore that's missed and many, MANY nods to the original series and movies. It's also a bit ironic to hear the "Mission Impossible" movies mentioned as I have not seen any of them.

    5:05 - Prime Directive is very important. There are so many ways a primitive civilization can go wrong if interfered with, so much destruction! Personally, I think Prime Directive is a logical explanation for Fermi's Paradox (if life exists in the universe, where is it?). If humans figured out that interference is bad in 1960s, surely advanced aliens can also figure that out.

    an attempt to explain some of the differing opinions on these films - Essentially, OG Trk and especially The Next Generation leaned heavily into the philosophical side of scifi. It's main point of difference form Star Wars was that it was not just a popcorn film, which arguably the new Trek is, along with it's willingness to ignore science in favor of spectacle. That of course causes some dislike from fans who preferred the 'deeper' approach to Star Trek. As for this specific film, it is divisive because it is essentially a retelling of one of the previous movies (The Wrath Of Khan), but in a way certain elements have less impact and to those who saw the OG first, it came off as a bit lame. Cumberbatch did a brilliant job here but had an impossible task of filling the shoes of one of the best villain portrayals of all time. These movies are great, I had lots of fun with them and they look/sound amazing, but if you had to boil it down, I watch these for a popcorn film, but if I want something with more depth... OG all the way. Sadly, with JJ leaning so heavily into Wrath of Khan for this, I think it does tend to make it just a tad less rewatchable in the long term. btw.. if they serve as a gateway to new audiences for the OG... they did their job!

    "does it really matter if they saw the ship and worship it?" - That right there sums up the difference in Trek's.. here it skims over the issue, in OG this has been deeply explored, and yeah.. it's not good.

    What really makes this Star Trek trilogy work is simple. J.J. Abrams. His direction is amazing. They had a lot of source material for Khan since he is the worst villain they would ever face. And they got one of the best actors on the planet to play him. I love the storyline and acting of Scotty. I hate that Anton Yelchin (Chekov) died in 2016. I have never been a full ST fan, just had some experience before the new movies, and while I appreciate the old movies, I like these two bests. And yeah, you are right, I think mostly the real fans of the franchise were not that wild about the new movies, maybe they did not fully fit into the canon, or had somewhat different take on what a Star Trek movie should be. • @jimmy2k4o
    @jimmy2k4o3 ай бұрын

    I’ve seen the comments and nobody has spoiled a thing. A thing from an older Star Trek movie that makes this better. It was written and made with the idea the audience would understand. Spoilers below for Star Trek wraith or khan: Towards the end of wraith or khan, Kirk tricks khan into destroying his own ship. And the enterprise is damaged and Spock replies it absorbing a lethal dose of radiation. In this movie, young Spock asks old Spock how they beat him. Then in the next scene he asks bones to activate the torpedo. Then when Kirk is dying and talking to Spock they say Kirk: using what he wanted against him, thats clever. Spock: it’s what you would have done. Kirk: and this, is what you would have done, it’s only logical. So they flipped it, even though this is a new timeline, maybe somethings are inevitable.

The originals are dated cinematically but watching the originals and then this is such an eyeroll when they repeat that scene. And the magical blood is so stupid. No one should die anymore. The huge ship was ridiculous after the huge ship in the first movie. It got to be The Little Engine That Could. The ending cracked me up with "I can't beam him up but I can beam you down" followed by "I can beam you down". I always picture Oprah screaming "And you get beamed down, and you get beamed down".
