How could you not love the crew stealing the Enterprise? And how could you forget when they sacrificed the Enterprise to survive? It is a great movie.

I still say "Stealing the Enterprise" is the best single scene in Star Trek ever. The destruct sequence was heartbreaking. It's hard to understand after seeing so many versions of the Enterprise destroyed over the years, but seeing the original falling from the sky was like the end of an era. She was Kirk's true love.

BRILLIANT line. Dee Kelly also has a great one in Undiscovered Country: Chang: “I am as constant as the Northern Star.” McCoy: “I’d give real money if he’d shut up.”

Gotta love the scene where Sarek does the mind meld with Kirk. He clearly regrets having to turn Kirk's grief up to 11. Especially when he knows that Kirk damn near viewed Spock as a brother.

Maltz is actually a pretty important character. Thanks to him we have the Klingon Dictionary (according to author Marc Okrand!)

Back and forth between this and part 2 as my favorite movie of all time. The scene where David dies feels so real, because there's no music,David tries to fight a Klingon and has no chance and it happens so fast with no warning and Kirk has zero time to talk his way out of it. Heartbreaking scene.

What is also interesting is that the Klingon soldier upon hearing Kruge's order to "Kill one.I don't care which." settled on the honorable choice of wanting to kill Saavik, the only Starfleet officer of the three captives. David was a civilian and as a human scientist, could be expected to break under torture. Young Spock was a teenaged boy.There would be no honor in killing him. Saavik was also a Vulcan and it was widely known among Klingons that Vulcans would not crack under torture. Even though Kruge had taken his crew on a rogue mission. And even though he had resorted to using hostages as leverage against a Federation starship. His crewman, given a choice, choose to kill a uniformed starfleet officer.The most honorable choice.

Spot on. I'm a new trekkie, a friend got me into the original series last year and we're up to the movies and David's death scene caught me off guard because Kirk usually does manage talk his way out of these situations or finds a way in some form but in this case as the video commentary says Kirk loses and loses big this time. Shatner's performance sells it very well. And kudos to Director Nimoy.

This was the 1st Star Trek movie I saw in the theater & the 1st movie I remember seeing in the theater overall. I saw it the day it opened wide. I was 5 years old.

nothing gets me more emotional than the music while stealing the enterprise. we have the build up and then once they've cleared space doors, i get all goosebumpy every time.

Fantastic music!

They really captured lightning in a bottle with Star Trek 2, 3 and 4. The crew are on top form and the extra cast members. I don't understand why Star Trek 3 don't get no respect. It is a great adventure with lots of fun moments like the crew stealing the ship, but also gets very dark with the Enterprise and David revealing the truth about genesis and his subsequent fate. The special effects are still stunning to this day and the music is amazing. Fantastic Movie :)

I think many of the critics of the day were not especially big fans of the TOS tv series. They liked TWoK because it delivered epic space battles on par with the Star Wars trilogy,and Ricardo Montalban delivered an iconic larger then life performance as Khan that was every bit as big as Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. They expected that ST 3 would try to top itself with even bigger space battles and a more over the top iconic villian. When they didn't get that, they said the movie was "ok" but something was missing. Nimoy had the guts not to serve up left overs.

This was the movie that really hooked me as a Trek fan. I had seen some episodes of TOS as a kid and even saw The Wrath of Khan in the theaters - but at the time I was like Carol Marcus, "who is Khan, and why is he so wrathy?" Fast Forward to 1985 and I rented the Search for Spock on VHS. I don't know what it was that hooked me, but I was hooked. I immediately went back and watched Wrath of Khan and even the Motion Picture. At that time is was becoming more and more difficult to catch episodes of TOS as the TV syndication was winding down. I eventually got the entire series through Columbia House - 40 tapes, 2 episodes per tape, a new tape every 6 weeks. I started the collection in high school and finished it in college. It took a full size foot locker to store and a bookcase to display. Today I can tap a metal and glass rectangle 10 times and watch any episode of any Trek series ever made. That's pretty cool when you think about it.

This is my second favorite trek film. The enterprise theft scene is soooooo much fun. And the acting in that scene is top notch. Watch Shatner face when he hears the Excelsior Captain say he will never sit in the captains chair again…the steely resolve in his eyes, the resolution on his face, and the acceptance when says “warp speed”.

One of the greatest film scores ever written.

Seriously underrated movie. Never got the love it deserves. Worthy successor to Wrath of Khan. Loved some of the acting moments: Kirk realizing his son was dead, the moment when Scotty and Chekov realize Kirk planned on blowing up the Enterprise, just a lot of really cool moments. Wish Kirstie Alley had returned. As an aside, back in the day, the TV commercial spoiled the Enterprise destruction...man, that sucked. Thanks for posting!

And much of the criticism that was there was because it didn't try to outdo TWoK. Some people expected more of what worked in TWoK in the sequel. Larger ship battles and an even more over the top villian. Nimoy had the guts to make a movie with smaller stakes.

One of my favorite movies. I never understood why some didn't like it.

This is one of my favorite Trek movies of all time. Highly underrated and I’ve always disagreed when people say all the odd-numbered films are bad. So many great elements to this film. It holds a special place in my heart and after nearly 4 decades of watching it through the years, it’s still one of my most favorites, if not my favorite.

The stealing of the Enterprise, for me, is one of the best scenes in a sci fi movie ever. From James Horner's score for the entire scene to the scale of space dock to Excelsior's pursuit.. all put together wonderfully. Love it!

Absolutely. Easily my favourite Trek scene - right from when they recue McCoy until they warp off. Still get goosebumps as the Enterprise clears the space dock doors to Horner's magnificent score.

What is strange is that the scene seems to have been re-edited at the last minute, at least AFTER the score was recorded: there's CLEARLY more music on the soundtrack (for this scene) than on screen.

This is an excellent film. Completely underrated and has so much rewatch value, as much as 2, 4 & 6. James Horner’s score is elevated in this film from the excellent score he delivered for Wrath of Khan, especially for the Stealing the Enterprise scene, the Genesis destruction, return to Vulcan and the build up to the Enterprise’s destruction. One of my favourite films, let alone one of my favourite trek films

2 4 & 6 over shadowed 3. It does deserve more respect

my favorite Star Trek film - even though the story's premise strains credulity - it begs the question whether all Vulcans simply transfer their spirit before they die so they can soon after hop into the next available body - but then we are told at the end that the whole transfer business is risky and potentially fatal to both parties concerned - yeah, that's a real conundrum, to be sure - and I know many did not think too highly of Christopher Lloyd's role as the villain - but for me his performance absolutely raised the film to a new level - best ST villain in my book - perfect combination of intelligence and heartless cruelty - and then there's the epic way he yells "Get out of there !" - kudos also to Horner's magnificent music

At last - there's someone else put there that loves Search For Spock as much as I do! It pairs up with Wrath Of Khan brilliantly, it's full of emotional moments and fun, loads of quotable lines and Christopher Lloyd as Kruge...who could ask for more?

"Stealing the Enterprise" scene with Horner's score is Top 5 moment in all Star Trek.

I love Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, it is very underrated. James Horner's musical score is top notch, especially during the stealing of the enterprise sequence. Several iconic moments in this film; the death of Kirk's son, the destruction of the enterprise, the introduction of the Bird of Prey, and the scene when Sarek (Spock's father) views the crew landing in Vulcan, his look explains his relief that Spock has returned, yet knowing what Kirk had sacrificed; this scene has no dialogue, just music and visual storytelling. Thanks, JoBlo and Chris for giving this one its respect!

Leonard Nimoy did a great job with this and part four. I love watching 2,3 and four all together.

My favorites of the original crew Trek films are 2, 3, and 6. They follow the through line that began with Wrath of Khan. They are the best, in my opinion. I never felt that 3 was the let down some said it was. Loved Christopher Lloyd as the Klingon Commander, Kruge. He's utterly ruthless, yet pragmatic.

I really liked this one. Loved the score, the performances, it looks visually stunning but that could be my bias for 80s sci-fi and fantasy because they will always look the most gorgeous to me.

It is a great movie. The fact it is a continuation and also that they continued off this into 4 is awesome

The Search for Spock is definitely one of my favourite Trek films and I think the stealing of the Enterprise is up there with the best scenes in the entire franchise.

Agreed. On paper, woulda thunk that a ship leaving spacedock at 1/4 impulse would be exciting? Lol

Fun fact: this film was not widely released outside of America and especially in Europe. So in front of Star Trek IV they had a recap, more or less. And that's why the foreign movie posters hide "Star Trek IV" at the bottom, as it would lead many to wonder where #3 went. This was the pre internet times.

Always had a special fondness for this movie. I’m absolutely astounded to learn that was John Larquette in that role!

I loved this movie THE SECOND a Klingon Bird of Prey decloaked. It was such a cool model. It is one of my favorite classic Star Trek movies.

It carries the arc and helps build to the rest of the movies, and yes you do empathise with Kirk in the Undiscovered Country about the death of his son. It gives a great conclusion to the end of The Voyage Home as well.

You forgot to mention that the movie also contained the most elegant and beautiful star fleet ship ever created: The USS Excelsior. Ok, I admit she had some Scotty induced engine problems, but they solved that until "The Undiscovered Country" where she really shines.

What this movie does exceptionally well is highlight how good the Enterprise's crew was. They danced around Starfleet when they stole the ship, detected and succesfully countered the Klingon trap and when, by misfortune, were temporarily beaten by the Klingons, found a way to win, no matter the cost.

I love this film! I thought Lloyd was outstanding as Kruge and thought Kruge was an interesting paraelle to Kirk in many ways. Kruge not only was upset at the death of his pet, he mourned his crew.

@@kevinkorenke3569 Indeed.I many ways Kruge would set the standard for a baseline Klingon, that Worf would play off of in the TNG era. He had a code.But he had no problem doing what would be considered dishonorable behavior in favor of a greater good. Ironically, both Kruge and Kirk were engaged in rogue missions in defiance of superiors and their governments,when they met. At least Kruge could say he was there for the Klingon people and way of life.Kirk was doing it to save one best friend and to hopefully revive another.

If 2, 3 or 6 are on TV, I can definitely watch them for about the 8 millionth time each. And I'm a huge TNG fan, so I'll happily watch any of those anytime

The mindmeld with Sarek is really powerful as is the juxtaposition between "needs of the many" and "needs of the one". The return of the Enterprise to Spacedock with all the battle damage and the implication that so many had died is really intense too. It has a better Saavik than the second movie. I think it's a good film.

RIP Leonard Nimoy. Miss you so very much. 😢

In 1984 I was 6 years old and loved watching Star Trek with my family. My parents took me to see Search For Spock and the destruction of the Enterprise upset me for days after seeing the movie.

One of my favorite star trek movies, really like how they have to get the crew back together, and it's the first time actual Klingon language is spoken and written

@@SumDumGy ya but Marc Okrand created a usable spoken language and alphabet for star trek 3. The Klingons talk in 1 but their language was just gibberish, and used nonsense writing on the computer screens. Marc Okrand based the language and alphabet on the first movie and building from their he made it real. That's why you can read shakespeare in the original klingon

The Genesis Trilogy. One of the best movie trilogies I’ve seen. Aside from Guardians of the Galaxy, Back to the Future, The Lord of the Rings, and the Original Star Wars Trilogies. I love this film too.

Still remember seeing this a few times when it was in theaters as a youth. Hadn’t really set the pattern of odd and evens being a thing and I still feel i it holds up just thanks to the others getting more scenes and interactions. McCoys best I feel.

I think this is massively underrated. I think the narrative around the odd/even movies is what defined this film as being bad. The truth is, this was a very ambitious, touching, exciting film. The special effects work very well for how ambitious those scenes were.

I find this to be my go-to Trek film... seriously underrated.

It's a good romp very much in the spirit of the original show. It has wonderful and funny character moments and went a long way in establishing the modern Klingons. It's also the first one I saw in a theater!

Not to forget this film gave us one of the most iconic ships, the Klingon Bird of Prey and firmly established the Klingon look for decades.

I agree, this is definitely the most underrated film. People don't seem to understand that it's not about the conflict between Kirk and the Klingons (as was Wrath with the conflict between Kirk and Khan), it's about what Kirk is willing to sacrifice to save his friend, Spock. I find this film to be very entertaining and well executed. I would even place it above Star Trek 4. It's right behind Wrath and Undiscovered Country for me.

I like Star Trek 3. Christopher Lloyd what's a great Klingon. The scene where the Enterprise crew busted out McCoy was great.

ST3, this film is an anomaly in the best way possible. It's by far the most personal of the features and in retrospect, set the tone for the interpersonal moments and growth in DS9 and STP season 3. ST3 doesn't deserve to be labeled as one of the "odd numbered" films. It's beautiful, quiet, poetic and as a result of those factors... daring.

Stealing the Enterprise, the Klingon ambush, and destruction of the Enterprise are 3 of the best scenes in all of Star Trek. The "death of the Enterprise"... an emotional heartwrench from a ship being destroyed... will likely never be duplicated to that extent w decades of history stacked upon it.

I own the Blu-ray collection of 2, 3 and 4, what a great Saturday afternoon!

I agree with your analysis and critique of this film. And I agree that II, III, and IV are about Kirk's journey. Shatner does give a great performance. No one else could have constructed the legend of James T. Kirk. My contention is with your assessment of Robin Curtis' portrayal of Saavik. Curtis gives great depth to the role. Her scene with Spock in the Ponn Farr sequence is filled with compassion and warmth. Her admonition to David for his role in all of this chaos is direct, logical, and straight to the heart. And, unlike Alley, she had the benefit of being directed by the greatest Vulcan of them all.

First Trek movie I saw as a kid so this is definitely in my top 3! Some seriously iconic moments

Star Trek IV is my favorite. It introduced me to the whole Star Trek phenomena.

This movie has been...and ever shall be...highly underrated.

I really wish Kristie Alley had returned as Saavik but Star Trek III is up in my top five favorite Trek films. Along with Wrath of Khan, First Contact, Generations, and the Star Trek Reboot. But, then again, I just love Star Trek and will watch it whenever I can.

I don’t think it was intentional, but the story is an uncanny re-telling of Heracles rescuing Theseus from his chair of forgetfulness in the underworld.

Best trek films in order: 2, 3, 4, 6, 1, 5. There all so good, different and special. When I was in theaters and saw the human adventure is just beginning.. I got so excited and would wait with bated breath for a new sequel.

This is the fourth best Trek movie after II, VI, and IV. So many fun scenes and expanding the universe with Space Dock and more aliens. Plus who didn't love Uhura's scene, the jailbreak, and James Siiking was incredible as Captain Styles.

2, 3, 4 and 6 perfectly line up and are just those four classic Star Trek movies that I can watch in a row; over and over and over again without ever getting tired of them. As a kid of the 80s, I grew up with TNG and also had many enjoyable encounters with the classic series when ever it had a re-run on TV. But when my parents finally got me into the movies, even skipping the first motion picture as they never bought the VHS, gosh, that was when I truly fell in love with the original crew and the 1701A.

III was the first Star Trek movie I'd seen, and it was the one that solidified my fandom, being that I got to see it at the tender age of six in 1986.

When I saw this film in the theater, I knew, from watching TOS, that the activation of the self-destruct protocol this time around wasn't a bluff like it had been the last time. When Kirk and crew evacuated and the countdown ticked down to 5, that was the point of no return. I, like everyone else in the theater, was as quiet as a church mouse, because we all knew that our beloved Lady's saga had come to its conclusion and she was about to give her last full measure of devotion.

Yeah, this is a great movie. Having to follow The Wrath of Khan is always going to be a tricky one but it does the job well. I agree that having Kirstie Alley back would've helped for continuity but at least Robin Curtis' Saavik actually had proper Vulcan eyebrows. :D I'd say it's my third favourite Trek movie after The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country.

7:27 HOLY CRAP!! I never realized that was John Larroquette! I have watched this movie probably a hundred times, hell I saw it in the theaters when it came out and through all that time I never realized that was John until this video. How did I ever miss that!

I absolutely adore this movie, more than "Wrath of Khan", and only slightly less than "Undiscovered Country". William Shatner is at his best here, IMO, and the visual effects are not bad at all. A truly underrated movie!

Star Trek III is a “good” movie by itself, a great movie within the arc.

I remember seeing Star Trek 3 in the Theater when I was 12 & I still to this day remember saying to my Parents I want to see this movie again! It was a worthy sequel,not my favorite,that goes to Six.! I will say Star Trek 3 had fantastic effects for 1984!

I honestly think the lack of Kirstie Alley hurt this movie. She had created a bond with the legacy crew and by recasting Saavik that bond was just gone.

The reason the role of Saavik was recast was because Kirste Alley demanded more $ for ST3...

They should see if John Larroquette would be interested in returning to Trek. Klingons live long. He could have a fun cameo in Lower Decks.

This is the first Trek film I really got into. I first saw it in 1987 when it was first on tv, and so I recorded it and watched it over and over, well my favourite parts anyway.

Next to The Motion Picture for personal favorite Star Trek films that are sadly sadly underrated. Perhaps not as well written as Khan, but a solid entry that is fully thrilling movie. Didn't mind the Savik recast either

It is an underrated Star Trek film. Lloyd playing a Klingon, was something else when it was announced. The comedian actor Kevin Pollak does and excellent Jim from Taxi as Spock. It was interesting casting. The Klingons were still more like the TV show at that point. It was sad to see the Enterprise go, but we knew that going in as the trailers told us...

Agree completely that this film has been criminally underrated! One note - as of 1987 I rated the films 2, 4, 3, 1. As of 1992, due to recency, I rated them 2, 4, 6, 3, 1, 5. But over time my estimation of this one has risen significantly, and, let's face it, 6 aged very quickly and 4 has not aged quite as well as hoped. 3 is now my 2nd-favorite Star Trek movie. 2, 3, 4, 8, 6, 1, 13, 7, 9, 10, 5, 11, 12

I have always loved this movie. It makes the perfect center for the "Kirk Trilogy". Always felt it should have been titled *In* Search of Spock however, to honor the TV series "In Search Of..." that Leonard Nimoy hosted at the time.

This is my favorite Star Trek film. I though this one had a great supporting cast very underrated IMO

John Larroquette was NOT an unknown! He had completed a well-loved supporting role as the manic, cowardly Colonel in the Bill Murray hit comedy STRIPES in 1981!

It's pretty good. And come ON, Christoper Lloyd's loony ass was PERFECT as a Klingon.

My big complaint with this movie is the lack of impact the events of the movie had on Kirk. He threw away his career, destroyed the ship that he so desperately loved, and lost his son. If I could rewrite this movie, I would have had Kirk trying desperately to save David's body. Irrationally, he would be thinking that since the Vulcans were going to resurrect Spock, maybe they could do the same for David. When he realizes that's impossible, he turns bitter and doesn't want to see the resurrected Spock, having an emotional breakdown in solitude. McCoy would try to coax him out and Kirk would admit that he regrets everything they did. He wouldn't have traded Spock for David and he thinks he would try to strangle Spock if he saw him. The newly revived Spock would be wanting to see Kirk and eventually Kirk would relent and see him. From here, the movie would play out the same with their conversation.

Also it made the scene when the Enterprise is reversing out of Space Dock...(something that in real terms would be dull)....very thrilling to watch.

I agree it is very Underrated in the series. My favourites be no 4 Voyage Home the best of all IMHO. 2 Wrath of Kahn the late Great Ricardo Montalban was Magnificent. And 6 Undiscovered Country the swan song of the TOS crew. Always leaves a lump in my throat watching it knowing most of them are no longer with us. Search for Spock was a gem and a movie I thought would never be made given Nimoy not wanting to play the character anymore. We are all so glad he did.

Excellent review. I always thought Kruge is a better villain than Khan. Kruge is Kirk’s equal, and actually outsmarts Kirk by seeing through the subterfuge of the Enterprise not being fully manned. Kruge’s motivations make perfect sense, too. Untrammelled expansion of the Federation plus the development of an apparent superweapon? It wouldn’t surprise me if Kruge’s mission to secure Genesis wasn’t sanctioned by the Klingon High Council. I would go so far as to say they TSFS is better than TWOK. Yep. I went there.

One of my three favorites of the original cast with Wrath of Khan and The undiscovered country. A truly engaging movie.

First Star Trek film I saw in the theatre. My Uncle took me and my brother. I think I was only 8 so it had a pretty big impact on me.

Absolutely under-rated. Harve Bennett knew nothing about Star Trek, but did pretty good. Now if only modern Star Wars and Star Trek would learn from what Harve did.

This is one of the best Star Trek films ever made. Easily on par with WoK

I for one really like this entry. Its just a simple fun adventure movie and you can't go wrong with Christopher Loyd as a villian. He's terrific in this sequel. The movie has heart and that matters the most.

Trek 3:TS4S is kinda my favorite Trek movie... Nimoy on helm, great performance by Shatner, Horner scoring the film is S tier... It has so many great moments...

Great video. Thank you for sharing it and doing it. Star Trek three is probably my third favorite of the Star Trek movies. Wrath of Khan is definitely my favorite, then Star Trek six the undiscovered country would be second, and then this one would be a close third.

_III_ has aged well. It's a smart, fun heist caper & moving story about a guy who risks everything to save the one thing he can't live without: his friend. _III_ is a love story. Edward James Olmos' absence as Kruge (Christopher Lloyd) is the one major flaw.

This is my third favourite Kirk era Trek movie after The Wrath Of Khan and The Voyage Home. I don't think any of the original cast films are bad (I still occasionally watch all of them), but 2,3 and 4 are my go to choice for a movie night with a beer and popcorn.

I never understood the push back of this film . It`s a perfect Star Trek film and sure it doesn't have the fight of 2 or the push of 4 but it has tons of energy in it. Its the introduction of the Klingon Bird Of Prey. We never saw it before. The Death of the original Enterprise , David Marcus...lots of weight in this movie that would have lasting repercussions .It is an undervalued movie and so important to this cannon. The Undiscovered Country wouldn't be as amazing as it is without Star Trek III.

Prior to release, I remember Shatner and Nimoy doing an interview on some morning show, I think it might have been Good Morning America. Asked if they actually find Spock, Shatner teased something like, "If we don't, what a waste of celluloid." I saw the movie on opening weekend, and enjoyed it. I didn't start to disparage it until other Trekkies told me I should. It's not the best of the franchise, but it is good. The honor of "worst" goes to ST V.

The score when the Enterprise returns to space dock is one of my favorites even though Horner stole a lot of it from classical works.

Although ST:II was a BLAST! ST:III was a wonderful continuation to the story and will always have a place in my heart! Many great moments with a great cast! LOVE IT!!❤🌟🌷🙏 Thank You😁👍🌟

Tho has always been my favorite Trek movie. Stealing the Enterprise is so incredibly fun and exciting.
