Saw the original at age 6, I'm 60 and the original Trek is still the best. You can keep your special FX, lens flare Abrams, there's no substitute for first rate writing, story telling, and characters.

galaxyman2007dtl: At :34 Sulu says they are at maximum speed.(Enterprise 1701 was capable of Warp 8 which is 512x the speed of light.) At :39 the crewman says that at that velocity,they are 8 minutes away from outpost 4. At warp 8,It would take the Enterprise 1701 two minutes to make it to the edge of interstellar space from earth's orbit which is 123 astronomical units away or 123x the distance from the earth to the sun.(11.4 billion miles) So they are roughly 23 billion miles away from outpost 4 or 246x the distance between the earth and the sun.(246 astronomical units) Interstellar space is the place where the sun's constant flow of material and magnetic field stop affecting its surroundings.

galaxyman2007dtl: The Enterprise D from Star Trek TNG could travel at warp 9.6 which translates to 1909x the speed of light. It would take the Enterprise D 32 seconds to travel to the Heliopause from earth. So then traveling at warp 9.6, it would take the Enterprise D one minute to travel to outpost 4.

It’s interesting. Someone asked me the other day what is my favorite TOS episode. I really had to pause. The truth is, upon reflection, that I don’t have one. But this is certainly one of my favorites

I remember watching this as a kid and how old everyone looked. Now I’m watching this at age 59 and notice how young everyone looks. So weird.

@Charles Martel So is travelling faster than light. Most sci-fi stories would be pretty boring if know scientific limits were forced on the stories; e.g: no faster than light, no transporters, etc.. The show does get around you concern by using the plot device of "sub-space" communication, basically a hyperspace for communication channels.

Actually a lot of the 'technology' was well ahead of its time..! Considering it was the 60s - loads of things materialised from the 90s onwards!

@@pallen49 Great question! It never occurred to me to consider that. I guess the only clue is to compare their respective pilot episodes. Pike had one or two acton scenes in which he was quite good, so did Shatner of course. I think what (Hunter) Pike was lacking was a McCoy and a mature Spock. Nimoy hadn't quite formed Spock in the first pilot, but would he have eventually got there? I think so, Nimoy was dedicated to the character. Scotty was there too. So maybe it comes down to the doctor's role. The chemistry between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy is undeniable. Would Pike have made Star Trek great with Dr. Boyce (John Hoyt)? Hoyt was a very solid actor, but it's hard for me to imagine anyone other than DeForest Kelly conjuring up that magical chemistry between himself, Kirk and Spock. But then again, maybe it would have been better(?!)... Damn you ponchai allen, that's a tough one! Tell you what, I'll go through the portal from The City on the Edge of Forever, engineer the change, and we'll see how it plays out...

I like how bones McCoy always looks like he needs a drink or he's had too many drinks the original series was the best

My Pop was a career naval officer. He was retired when TOS came out. I was just a toddler. But I remember this episode as the first I ever watched with him. It was by then in syndication and on well past my bedtime. He loved the show. Especially Mr. Spock. He'd sit me on his lap and say "Now this is how a sailor is.". I ended up in the Army as an officer, and whenever I was confronted with a difficult choice I'd imagine what Pop would do, but I'd ask what Spock would do.

Made Alzheimer’s sound exciting

The strength of this episode is in the writing, acting, and storyline. Star Trek handled very complex issues that were going on in the world in the late 1960's. Television, at the time, was well written, unlike today's stuff.

It's amazing to me how Kirk kept his cool and how patient he was. That Mr. Styles was a royal pain in the ass. He should have been relieved.

It was so AMAZING to have this brilliant TV show to grow up on in the late 1960s and during reruns in the 1970s. THANK YOU Lucille Ball for approving this intelligent show at Desilu Studios. You were a truly smart visionary. Lucy will certainly have a crown and a throne in Heaven.

This was a nice nostalgic callback. TBH the original series was great and was underrated back in the day. It was ahead of its time and frankly should have ran for more seasons. Keep in mind back in 60s television isn't where it's at today and the variety of shows were limited so Star Trek was a diamond in the rough. There was nothing else like it back then.

One of my top 3 fave episodes of the series. Excellent story. Superb dialogue. And Mark Lenard delivers phenomenal acting every time.

NOW that was real science fiction! Loved that show in my teens, still love it and I'm a 70 yr old. This show was a submarine story set in space. It was brilliant for its time. Its themes about the horror of war.

Oh man the original was awesome. I grew up with Star Trek and the stories were great and it was severely underrated and under appreciated. It was simply ahead of its time. But remember back then sci-fi was just starting to take off and this was the only show of its kind back in the day. This was in the era of mostly Westerns and war dramas so Star Trek was a diamond in the rough and deserves more seasons. But audiences haven't caught on yet.

I love TOS ❤, the best Trek of all.

"Balance of Terror" was the eighth episode to be produced and 14th to air. It remains one of the greatest of the entire franchise, one of its deepest and darkest, and one that embodies so much of what made _Star Trek_ memorable: naval-warfare action wrapped around anti-war politics; a strident message about how friend and foe alike live much the same lives and want much the same thing, that no judgment of a national enemy escapes judgment of oneself; a recognition that, for the show's brand of science fiction, hard science is far less important than plot, character and metaphor. The story begins with a wedding and ends with a funeral; Kirk and his opposite lose crew and rue preemptively the war that may follow, but cannot retreat.

Agreed - and Quality of Mercy was a great tribute to it. Plus it did a good job underscoring why kirk was the right man for the job on that day: despite the orders declaring ship and outposts expendable, despite prohibition against entering the zone, the situation was much like The Vulcan Hello - the correct answer was to ignore orders and normal federation philosophy and come in shooting. Kirk did, Pike didn't.

A true classic. The original had great stories and characters and dialogue. Back in the day CGI and even sci-fi tech wasn't so advanced so that's why they had to rely on good stories with great characters.

@@locarno24 Well to be fare most sci-fi tropes would be to seek peace and that it's better to work together then destroy each other. That's called be the better man approach. But they added a twist to the cliche where it's better to come all guns ablaze. 😆

What an excellent Star Trek episode. This is Kirk at his best, folks.

I really like seeing the faces of all those crew members listening to Kirk's announcement ... it was a reminder that there were so many other people on that ship.

It's still good even today because the story is good with great dialogue and character acting. Less focus on CGI and special effects so the story had to be good back in the day.

Very good job bringing “Run Silent, Run Deep” to the Trek universe.

Thanks Mike. TOS always takes me back to my childhood. This show inspired me beyond measure, as well as my high school teachers.

This was without a doubt one of the top 2 episodes of ALL Star Trek series. (The other.. Yesterdays Enterprise STNG)

TOS is by far the best in the franchise

One of the best TOS episodes. At some point the Enterprise had to be shown as a military ship and this episode did that in spades. Shatner's performance during this is just great, when he tells Uhura to send a message to Star Fleet that they are proceeding into the neutral zone the tension is palpable.

Shatner's acting is very good in this episode.

This series is the only one that is Star Trek. Sound effects, music, writing,acting all class

Shatners acting in this episode is also outstanding. ...

Those were the best of the TV Times 80's.. We had enjoyed every bit of those Sunday Pre-Noon shows.

This was so good. And SWN made an episode based on this episode-and it was awesome. I love a good face off in space between two different species.

@@stephenconway2468 A third example: "Starship Down", one of _Deep Space Nine's_ best episodes, which goes so far as to place the maneuvering spaceships in a dense planetary atmosphere that induces the sort of "creaky hull" metallic sound effects usually reserved for a Hollywood-movie submarine.

Strange New Worlds made this episode so much better. I had to come back rewatch this after seeing STW's version. So good.

They modernized the story but the original was the first. Back in the day TV shows were focused on great stories and awesome characters. 👍

@@Folker46590 Well it's all relative. The original is still the gold standard but if you compare discovery and Picard then you'll appreciate how good strange new worlds is. The other series just misses the mark.

I only got glimpses of super delayed Star Trek episodes (original series) when I was growing up because only 2 of our neighbors had TV sets at the time in my village in the Philippines. Now that it is on Netflix, I can enjoy full season episodes at my leisure. I hope I will have enough sleep.

I may only be 23 but I’m a die hard trek fan I do like the original series. Balance of terror is a classic story, such a brilliant episode. The effects do look dated but it’s incredible viewing and throughly enjoyable.

Notice HOW the camera zooms in on the characters personalities and expressions. It’s like watching a SHAKESPEAREAN stage play, ITS BEAUTIFUL! ...And the lighting captures the realism. Unfortunately, this and much more were lost and gone from the newer TV shows and Movies. I heard Gene Roddenberry wasn’t even given creative control by Paramount ( who later bought DESILU studios) this is one reasons why Star Trek is totally different than the original. Check out a fan based production called “ STAR TREK CONTINUES” it’s the closest thing to the original TV show that’s out there. It’s too bad NBC cancelled it in 1969. But at least we have 78 episodes to watch over again!

My personal favorite episode in the TOS series.

I've just met Capitan Kirk traveling in Italy with his friend. He was very kind with us. He is a sweet 93 years old man and a true star.

I'm still watching at 65

Wow. Aside from an episode or two on television, I've never really dabbled into the original series of Star Trek, though I do really enjoy the OS films (except the first one). The Next Generation, Voyager and Deep Space 9 were the only ones I truly watched. Now, after seeing this one clip of an apparently great episode, I'm forced to admit that I have a newfound interest to begin TOS. Just imagining that this could potentially be a telling of a future for us if we ever do make interstellar contact with another intelligent and potentially dangerous species makes this one clip brilliant. It gives me a bit of a chill. I like it.

Nice episode for those not familiar with the genesis of the “neutral zone”.

Been watching Star Trek since I was 10 seen all the films and tv 📺 series and still love it at 41 it’s love that will never go away for this franchise

Out of all the episoded in the old series this is my favorite one.

The Enemy Below set in space. Both men knew they were very likely to start a terrible war and neither could afford to flinch from it. Actually, now that I think about it, the issue was never to prevent a war. The Federation was at war already from the moment of the attacks. The issue was to prevent the war from escalating. Had Kirk not succeeded, these attacks would have been regarded like a Pearl Harbor.

I love you Star Trek. Claudiney-Brazil.

Over the past 53 years, I've watched this episode more than any other. Not sure how many, exactly - but a minimum of three times a year would be accurate. It's just great.

I think he just gave me a Yes, Muchos Gracias Leonard Nimoy my Lord.

This was stage work of an original order. No other show before it except Bonanza had as alluring a milieu. Whats up there, whats around that corner? It was a comfortable and inviting staging, intimate and warm.

Yes. And this episode shows how well the best of Star Trek worked with and around its budget. Prosthetic ears cost time and money... so the non-speaking Romulans wear helmets that evoke the Ancient-World cultures to match the sword-and-sandal lines for their superiors. The set for the enemy bridge was a one-episode construction on the studio's dime, one that had to be torn down after a few days... so the Romulans stand at their posts, suggesting hardened soldiers manning a weapon with an engine tacked on.

I was 24yrs old & came home from work to watch this show.
