I love rpgs never played the star ocean series this will be my first thought it was the best game with mario rpg at the direct I have pre ordered the standard edition cant wait. Hope square enix make more hd2d classic games next chrono trigger please.

I just wish they would redo Xenogears, the first game of that series. I know the original team has gone their separate ways but it would be nice to have a remake. Glad they're doing this one as well. Makes me wonder if they will do SO3 too

Second Story set a near perfect mood with it's music, scenes, and environments. You can tell the development team are super fans at a glance. The reason so many of us nearly cried upon seeing this trailer is because they lovingly transferred the spirit and soul of the original, right before our eyes. I can't thank them enough for preserving the memory of this adventure, and I hope a new generation has the opportunity to experience it for the first time.

Read somewhere that one of the devs of Gemdrop is a former Tri-Ace employee who worked on their earlier titles like the VP l1&2 and SO series till 2013...

​@@SolaceAndDreadit did and when I was reading the comment sections I was so blown away but no one reacting, I think it's maybe because it's those of us in our 30s in the 90s JRPG golden era on psx with our jewel cases lol, or because this was a more cult series not a lot played it back then? Since 1999 being 13 y o I remember asking anyone around me before the internet if anyone has played this and no one knew but I would still try to get people to look. It seemed like back then there would be RPGs just show up on the shelves like legaia, etc and either knew about it and loved it or not I hope the kids try it with this remake and see what this was to us back then

Hands down the greatest JRPG of all time! I’ve been waiting to be able to play it on a newer system

I've never been one to react to things, but I will say that during the direct when Mario RPG was shown I was thrilled. Then when I saw Star Ocean I totally lost any composure because Star Ocean The Second Story has and always will be my favorite video game of all time. Same. This game literally defined my middle school years. Its the first game that completely grabbed me. I even won a school art contest drawing Ashton who's still one of my favorite video game character to this day.

Best thing about this is that if it works, especially with the animated portraits and voice acting, it is absolutely the template for a Xenogears remake. We might finally be getting there.

I'm so excited for this. My only wish is that we are able to also use the original SO2 English voices. Probably won't happen as they added voice acting to the cut scenes in SE. I guess I just miss Precis saying, "There's mister enemyyyyyYYy~~~~ Rocket pun, rocket pun, rocket pun, rocket pun, rocket pun, rocket puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun!!! Leave it to meeeeeeeeeeeee"

I heard that Gemdrops has some former tri-Ace staff that worked on the original Star Ocean 2. At least they are familiar with the title. We also have to take to consideration that tri-Ace was busy developing Star Ocean 6 The Divine Force for the past few years. As much as would prefer tri-Ace to do the SO2 remake they probably wouldn't have the time, resources, and manpower to work on both SO6 and SO2R at the same time. So Square Enix decided to outsource the project to Gemdrops.

Star Ocean 2 really really resonated with me when it first released on the PS1. At the time I was heavily into any and all JRPGs, getting and playing as many as I could on my PS1, but Star Ocean 2 hit a unique feel for me. I was moved pretty much exactly like you were when I saw that trailer pop up during the Nintendo direct. I had never connected with a JRPG main character so strongly as I did with Claude. At the time of release I was almost the same age as him and also feeling like I had a really impressive and accomplished father that I could never live up to. So, I was far more invested in Claude and his relationship with Rena than I had ever been for any other game before. So this is pretty special for me as well. I just replayed the PSP version a few months ago, but I'm already excited to play it again.

I had the same reaction, could not contain my excitement. Am so looking forward to this SO2R release!

I have the best memories of SO2 back when it dropped in I believe 1998 maybe 99. I played this, then Lunar SSSC and, Xenogears in the same year nothing could beat that.

I hope they add better support for private actions like being able to fast travel and notification when new one available

I was watching the direct when this game came onscreen. I had my friends discord open and basically screamed my text into the chat when I wrote that SO 2 is getting a Remake. I don't think anyoen was expecting Star Ocean 2 in that direct. My friend got really excited but kind of couldn't believe it at first. He loves Star Ocean and was really happy with these news. I too can't wait to play it. And as I sas there you can even change the difficulty. Now even my absolute JRPG Noob self can play this game. I may have played many JRPGs in my life, but I still suck at them. So excited for this game together with some books I am also excited for. The world may suck but it still keeps on giving.

Gotta say I'm more hyped for this game than any other game that's coming out or has come out in the last few years...

That line got changed in 2nd Evolution where he shouts out Pulverize Em when Ripper Blast is used so they may use that line for the same attack in this remake.

That and Claude NEVER actually said Pears into Peach's for Ripper Blast in 2nd story he actually said Tears into Piece's but he said it as such a LOW voice in 2nd story's dub you couldn't really here WHAT line he was saying when Ripper Blast lv 38 was used.

I was just as stoked for this. I have been wanting this remake for years and years.

The website has the voice actors for the characters listed, two sets of Japanese VAs for the Second Story and Second Evolution. For English it only has the Second Evolution VAs listed.

I have to wonder how they will voice Decus/Michael and his infamous "SPICULE!" attack. I made a whole video on this attack because I found it hilarious!

I remember grinding every skills from every characters just to see the new look of it. I hope they are still in this remake. Can't wait to get this one!

I really hope they kept this. Grinding up killer moves and seeing how they changed was actually one of the more interesting aspects of the game where you were rewarded for using a skill enough.

Technically this would be a great opportunity for them to actually remake Blue sphere also though

My favorite RPG of the PS1 era! Can't wait to get my hands on this.

Second Story will always have a precious spot in my heart as one of my all time favorite games. It had so much unique mechanics and charm to it that has resulted in some fond childhood memories. That being said, when I saw it was going to be remade, I exploded with joy. I thought it was just gonna be like First Departure R, but dang they proved me wrong. I was blown away with the 3D backgrounds and how it looked so faithful to the original pre-rendered stuff. I also love how they kept the original sprites, and at some parts of the trailers it looks like they made them even more expressive than before. Just seeing everything is like seeing the entire game in a fresh coat of paint. Also hyped to see the other changes they did. The battle system does look really cool, and that includes all the new battle animations for the spells as well! Also, the UI is definitely cleaner, and I prefer seeing the character portraits over names. By the way, I think that thing at the upper right is not a place for their messages, rather I think it's an option for auto battles? I dunno, that's just how I interpret it. Anyway, I could go off for hours about how excited I am, or about all the stuff in the trailers, but I won't. I hope they release more teasers though, since I wanna know more about how the game looks!

Even if 4x bloody armor users party is still possible AUTO battle still sucks since Opera almost NEVER uses Healing Star and for a 4x bloody armor run IF possible SHE must be 1 of them Ashton still sucks.

I am definately hoping to see all the mini games. Modern gamers need these fun breaks inbetween their story and side quest. Cant wait to rob the old man in Mars Villeage one last time to take his battle armor.

You mean the Chest/Goodie box item STOLEN from that Mars NPC its only Ernest that has 1 of the 2 battle suit armors stolen off of him their after Ernest first joins the party in order to steal it.

Star Ocean: The Second Story is one of the best RPG's EVER MADE!! Very Excited for this!

Never played Star Ocean game in my life but after seeing the art direction this game seem to have I was instantly sold on this and it might have become my most anticipated game this year. I hope I don't need to know anything from SO 1 to play this because it won't stop me from doing so.

Exactly same reaction to the direct for me. SMRPG was such a good surprise and star ocean 2.5 HD is a very welcome remake, even with it not being the first re-released. Especially with it having so much new stuff.

Early on I'd rather Steal it sure you need 40,000 fol for the BANDITS gloves but it still cost 1000 fol just to buy 1 COPY of the said item NEEDED to try to make the Goodie boxes yourself. That and you ONLY need like a lv 5 Stealing skill in order to STEAL it I could still fail to make them YOURSELF with Art at LV 10 for BOTH Claude/Rena and Celine NOT in the party YET.

This is the best news I’ve had since I lost my SO2 disc 2 way back when. A hidden gem and one of my favorite games of all time. Lovely music, tough endgame and a roller coaster of a story!

Beyond hyped, I've been bugging people in the modding forums for the last 3 years trying to get someone to remaster the backrounds for the original S02. This is a childhood dream come true

We haven't gotten full confirmation but from what we can tell it's only the dub of the English version from Second Evolution.

Star Ocean 2 R and Mario RPG caught me off guard. Star Ocean 2 is one of my favorite rpgs of all time and I hope this is a start of them remaking or at least remaster Star Ocean 3.

I'm so excited for this.. I love that the sprites are still the same but everything else around it is 2023... and the fact that it comes to ps5 since I do not care for handheld consoles. Gonna be a definite pre order for me!!!

Star Ocean 2 has always been one of my favorites games _ever._ I've been waiting for them to return to the second title for years, especially when First Departure got an enhanced port to the PS4 some years ago. But I never expected a full on remake. I couldn't be happier. That said, I'm a bit disappointed this remake doesn't featured remastered/remade sprites. It still uses the same 2D graphics from the original game, that, while aged exceptionally well, were made with CRT screens in mind; they look way too pixelated now. When you look at the sprites for Claude and Rena in the Last Cloudia collab with Star Ocean 2, it feels like a missed opportunity they didn't remaster sprites too. This would've been especially important for characters whose sprites didn't match their artwork even in the original game (namely Bowman and Opera).

I have been gaming since 1980 and Star Ocean 2 is my absolute favorite game of all time! I got chills, tears, goosebumps, and nearly got sick watching the new videos! I have been recommending it for forever and asking everyone,"Why on Urth havent they remade this yet!" My best guess is that they were waiting for game tech to be good enough to honor it properly. I can't say enough, so I'll just say," I'm beyond excited that, what once was a game, way ahead of it's time, is finally back in our time!" ...and I'll be playing it till the end of my time. p.s. heck yeah I watched the anime! 🐭 p.p.s thanks so much guys for the video! 🐭(fee fee)

From what I heard, gemdrops is pretty much an offshoot of Tri Ace created by one of the battle programmers from SO3 back in 2013. They worked on the Japanese only Second Evolution ports on the PS3/PS4/Vita. I could be wrong about this information as I got it from another comment, but if it's true then I'd imagine it's in good hands.

The dub option is for JP voice language only, because there are two types of the JP voice, the second evolution(PSP) one, and the original(PS1) one. This time, the original one will have full event dub, which is not included in the original PS1 version.

Seeing you cry while I never have ever played the game convinced me to set a preorder!!! Big fan of RPGs but wasn’t too fond of octopath so I’m gonna go the classics route. :-)

Excited to hear that! I promise this is completely different from Octopath. I also didn't like Octopath (so BORING) BUT this game won't disappoint. The only things I will warn you about: the first 3 hours are extremely dialogue heavy as they world-build It's a HARD game. Don't know if the remake softened it up though.

One of the best RPGs ever made. I can hum along with every note of every song with how much I play it.

I just got the first Star Ocean on PS4 and am two hours in. Fantastic RPG.

Wonder what the cave of trials is going to be like. Hopefully the Ethereal Queen is waiting to give me some good stuff

I just hope the skills evolve in looks by the number of times used like the original.

i remembered when i bought this game from a pawn shop and it didn't work. i never played it, but now I'm glad I have never played it until now. it's gonna be wicked with the new updates.

With this and suikoden 1+2 remasters (plus mario rpg remake ofc) coming this year, i can truely relive the golden age of jrpgs again! Esp since we already got grandia 1+2 hd, legend of mana remaster, and chrono cross hd! Just give us a wild arms 2, legend of dragoon, xenogears, and ofc fft remake/remaster i can die happy!

This game had more content than most AAA modern game nowadays. Hope they give finishers to characters. Imagine Cloud doing Ethereal Blast or Dimension Door. I'm gonna max level Cloude from the start using Phase Gun by a rubber band trick lol

This is the game that got me into JRPGs as a lad, This is an instant buy. It's not quite my favorite (Suikoden 2 claimed that, ALSO getting a Remaster.......eventually, when Konami will tell us when.) but it's very high up there.
