You are a god.
I think rather than a bunch of hornet mk 2 variants, it'd be better to just offer a larger variety of center modules. We have the stor all, the dual turret, the single turret. Once we have a function for the tracker's SWACs, could put it in as a module. Harder to make a sensible pod to replace the stealth variant, but maybe they could say it's some kind of signal jammer pod. That takes care of all important variants other than 'super hornet', which was basically just an extra seat. If they really wanted they could also add EMP or QED pods. My two cents anyway.
@hibikikensaki
Ай бұрын
That's what actually ended up happening with the mk1 variants anyway, once you have the ship variant you can just pluck out the center thing and swap it. You can slap the f7a mk1 dual size 3 turret onto any other mk1. I think it's probably just a confusing and outdated cockpit setup for new players as not even the giant military ships put that many mfds in your face. Imho the mk1 just feels like it was designed first and you notice a lot of missing quality of life things from newer ships.

@@SaltEMike I've been on SC since 2017, so I see where you are coming from. All new backers have rose-tinted glasses and false certainty. @@HotWheels1776Kinda. He did change, becoming MUCH less salty - He and Space Tomato joke about how SaltEMike isn't that salty anymore -but it was because he became more satisfied with the game and how it's being developed. From HIS perspective, he's less salty because they stopped giving him so much to be salty about. But yeah, he used to be too salty to me, and I wasn't a new backer, just a more chill dude. 🤷🏿♂️
@SaltEMike - re: Modularity (again): 1. Hull C tail section is a Module - that was the Proof of Concept to put in PU; 2. Retaliator gold pass + implementing _its_ modules was always "next on the cards" after Hull C; 3. Detachability of Caterpillar's Command _Module_ -> One of many modules the Cat is _supposed_ to have. There's still stuff for CIG to work out and fix there: - Note that Tali's interchangeable modules are still a bit wonky, in practice. Swapping modules and then calling up ship via ASOP results in a tonne of errors in the console where whichever system responsible for streaming in the assets is complaining about not being able to connect ports b/w module(s) and ship chassis. After a module swap, the Tali then takes some time to show up in the Hangar (if at all!) Price hikes: In many ways, I have no beef with CIG "sunsetting" the Hornet Mk I. However the timing and lack of notice (after bumping up the prices a lot after IAE) is cynical; - Similarly, bumping the price - without notice - on the Ironclad Assault _JPEG_ overnight was flat-out cynical. Clearly, more ppl took a CCU chit for it than pledging the full amount for a JPEG that may take years to show up in the PU 😂 - BTW: If the SCM speed of the Ironclad is commensurate with the Cat (or slower), then I don't think the Ironclad "obsoletes" the Cat or the C2. Cat is supposed to be modular, like Carrack is and will fit in smaller places; C2 is substantially faster and more nimble than the Cat and presumably the Ironclad. There will be valid use-cases for each.
I was going to buy an ironclad because indeed it is rad... I just needed to add 10 more bucks or something in those lines. I didn't because like you were saying, I already did my part, they need to provide theirs. There are a bunch of us OG backers that are already dead and never saw their dream ship 😢. Long story short I'm buying a F endeavor (it's my dream ship), and nothing more till they concrete their end of the deal. Keep up the good work SaltEMike your info rocks. Ps. The random 10 dollar increase after the original price was the drop that spilled my glass.

I'm another long suffering day 1 backer from 2012. I made the choice to close my wallet in 2014 when they decided to skip the original delivery dates on the promise of 'more better, a couple extra years'. Sure, I hope everyone who wants to wait an extra decade gets everything they ever wanted and more, well implemented, but I've never believed in rewarding bait and switch behavior and have regretted the choice less with every passing year. At the start of the project the narrative was that Chris had been constrained by publishers in the past. The reality that has unfolded is that Chris needs someone to force him to deliver or he'll dally and spend for a decade plus beyond the timeframe he sold you when he was taking your money.

I do not grind ingame money at all. Normally I just buy 50-100mil auec right after wipe, then buy ingame every ship I want, buy some new ships for store credits, then play the way I want. Experiment with ingame mechanics, evaluate new ships, mine, salvage, bounty hunt, do box quests, team up with people - anything. I play this way last two years - it works fine. No need to grind at all.
Crafting and Base building should be able to bind all the play loops together for progression, back burner the generic PvE missions and put these 2 things and all their tie in's on the front burner and turn them up full blast, this will get the game play on high gear which will drive people to want to come play and in turn buy ships, it's a win win for everyone.
I tend to skip through Jared's mealy-mouthed excuses when watching ISC & SCL, so thanks for subjecting yourself to it for the good of us all
What people forget is the fact that the bigger a ship gets, the more useless it becomes once it crashed. Have fun looking at the terminal waiting for 30 minutes until it spawns. What a great game! Much fun
I just... I don't get the mentality that having the Ironclad automatically makes all the other cargo ships obsolete. You need something better to work towards for that sense of progression, and it makes complete sense for someone to work their way up to a C2 or a Caterpillar, and then to a Hull C or Ironclad. Doesn't have to be one or the other.
@Haegemon

You are right, but what if already owned a real money C2 and the will to spend on upgrades, or a stable of comparatively less useful hauling ships to refund(melt), those ships would become obsolete in comparison. Usually those who field ships near the ironclad in size, already have the mind and means to get it, and might not even have to spend much to get it. Mike is one of those.

Legit the only reason its bad is the store 😂
Would be nice to have the command module have a tractor beam with the ability to detach and load the ship. The Cat already has a blind spot when using the beam to load so why not.
For everyone - That's Blender they do concept mesh in.
There is one thing I caught from that mining mission bit, and it is the option to buy commodities from another player. I think that's a really big deal if they finally put in game a way for cargo ''ownership'' to be transferred from one player to another without being in a group. I believe that would be the start of some for of emergent economy,
yes, modules for the F7C would've been the better way to go, so people had to choose the purpose for cheaper UEC ingame (at later stages).
it looks like the detachable control unit will be detach-ready in another 5-6 years, because why not. "when they do make the ship, it's gonna work Probably" - this statement is valid to everything that cig touches. As always those gantries provide excellent protection against intruders, bcs as we all know, snipers tend to shoot the rails mostly.
I’m anxiously awaiting that Road to 1.0 roadmap that Chris teased in the last letter so we finally know exactly what features he deems necessary to get at least some semblance of a space MMO across the line, and which stuff we’ll just have to keep waiting many more years for. One of my concerns all along has been that it’ll mostly just be server meshing, resource management, some T0 crafting system, & Pyro, Nyx, and a couple more star systems - and a lot of the career stuff (like Bounty Hunter v2) is actually going to be post 1.0.
Week in Review is one of the only SC shows I watch religiously on KZread these days.
i think they need to go back to putting more upgrade PATHS on starter ships. Idk why they did the gladius first, Im sure its because its heavily used in SQ42. But ships like the mustang, aurora and even iconic ships like the F7, could be the TRUE gold standards by allowing upgrade paths like the ones previewed in the Aurora video that was created forever ago. Because a lot of these gold standard ships dont encompass the modularity and how players can swap out big systems in their ships.
You know what would be really cool for the command module of the Ironclad and Caterpillar? If you could set a route to another planet and then just send the big portion of the ship into quantum to its destination and it just goes there by auto pilot. When it arrives, someone in your party gets a marker for it and can pick it up with another command module. Of course that means you would have to be able to buy individual command modules.
On the MKI, maybe I don't full grasp what they are doing. But if its anything like cars in real life, retiring a ship line, makes it rarer, which means, when SC does release, MKI's could become hard to find, and finding a derelict MKI in the middle of nowhere would be like finding a rust bucket Millennium Falcon somewhere; and that's cool concept. I can foresee other ship lines also retiring, as they bring in say the Centipede line, and retire the caterpillar for example.
I 100% agree with you on the power creep in general and how awesome the ironclad looks but I think the M2 will still have its place solely for the fact that the iron clad has zero pilot controlled weapons. As a pure cargo ship it's hands down 1000% better or if you have 3-4 friends with you to crew the iron clad it's gains the edge again but if you are solo or with just 1-2 friends I think the M2 is still valid.
Update the Legacy ships first!

But they dont make money fixing old ships...but seriously they need to flesh out the current list of ships that have been in concept for years and years and get this game to a more polished state...will this happen? No. Because money, but it sure sounds like it would be nice.

As an artist myself who creates 3d assets, I get where they're coming from. It's SIGNIFICANTLY easier to take small, prepare pieces to create a larger model, than it is to take parts of a larger model and cut them up to fit a smaller model. Them working on smaller ships, to work on bigger ships, makes complete sense from a pipeline perspective. You can blame CIG marketing for wanting to constantly push sales for large ships. They earn a lot of money.
@Funkiyy

@Nimoodles I feel this game is going to be so saturated with ships that just don't make sense. Everything bigger everything with bigger guns more guns. Pretty soon they willnjust make a ship that looks just like a gun
@andreww2925

@Nimoodles doesn't that just give incentive to never release the game. If all it is is new ships that cost more and more money, as a business, it makes sense to be in a perpetual development state.
@Tazytots
Ай бұрын
@@andreww2925 From a cynic's standpoint, yes. You could argue that because whales offer so much money for large ships, that they could just perpetually cycle through ship sales because people pay for them. That's not the case, though. Not only are they legally liable for a released product, but to suggest that they're not interested or invested in finishing the project would imply that the studio's entire existence is to simply be a front that.. loses CR money? That doesn't really track. We have their financials, right? We know they barely break even every year. They've also had to ask for investor support twice over the course of development, pumping millions of dollars in to the company. They also wouldn't be as transparent about their development if it were all a ploy. CIG is easily one of the most transparent developers in the world, followed closely by Intrepid Studios. CIG feels like they're running in place a lot, because a lot of the technology that is required for the game isn't something shiny you can look at. Ships are, so people use ships as a measuring tool for progress. It's a rather terrible tool. The ship team is somewhere between 40-50 people, out of a company of 800 employees. They're obviously doing SOMETHING. The only thing Star Citizen and CIG is guilty of, is being grossly mismanaged.
Again a very good video, love the energy you put in your show and all your videos ! Will love to see evo cargo with you!
15:18 that's the point: they can save their own game (which is a mess) by refining how each ship can be exploited. I bought, in game, a Hull A and I found it interesting to salvage wrecks cargo in space, compared to enclosed ships. Having valuable ground vehicles that can "actually" make money (a ROC that can make a real "time for credit" profit) could give the C2 and especially the M2 and the Nomad a meaning. The Nomad especially being hit heavily by cargo refractor as it's 4x3 cargo grid limit box storing combination massively, compared to the Hull A. The Raft is another notable example. We need some direction in the game development, with think forward, rather then react to issue attitude. Powercreep can be avoided easily if you give and take from each ship by giving them peculiarities that are actually useful.
I think the caterpillar wouldve been a no brainer to show off modularity instead of a super low scu count cargo box for the retaliator
@koffieslikkersenior

Great week in review. I watch them all and this one was the best I can remember.
2:03 that was a clean edit
@15:30 You've correctly identified that they're "kiting" ship development in using new ship picture sales to pay for backlog development. When people do it with cheques it's considered illegal. Back in the early days the narrative was that they were 'building pipelines' that would cause content (ships, star systems, missions, and so forth) to all come rolling off the assembly line once the pipelines were ready. A decade later we can see that their lack of planning has prevented the pipelines from coming online even today. This shows up later in your video @17:00 when Jared is talking about why Bounty Hunting V2 is supposedly on hold: Because they figured out that it has prerequisites like RESTRAINTS and TRACKING. It's grotesquely irresponsible that they didn't map this out back in say 2013 and is somehow surprising them in 2024. Things like this really drive home how expensive it is getting to not have a plan and just sort of 'work on what looks cool' in the hopes that it will turn in to a game some day. To the people still buying ships: Keep it up, they need about a quarter million USD a DAY (do the math) to fund the studios. Should be done within a decade or two at this rate.
16:35 so what ship will CIG draw a picture of and sell for more money next year, that will then help them to make the Ironclad, which will help them make the Kraken? And then the year after that, another ship to help make that ship to make the ship to make the other ships--... They only sell the jpgs, they don't actually start to make them.
@Syphirioth

I saw someone say it would be cool for the ironclads command module to be something you can fly down to planet to pick stuff up so you don’t need to take the entire ship down to a planet. I think they should go down that route instead. Especially if they want people to use these features.

Cheers Mike, I always look forward to this every week.
Crazy to skip over the torpedo loading bay on the Polaris. It was so sick!
Cargo update will make smaller ships more viable. The issue isnt that the smaller ships dont hold as much SCU, but that we have to store our cargo on our ships making selling them a necessity immediately to go get more cargo. If we can store cargo over time im hangars you can make runs of varying risks by choosing and selecting when, where,how,and what you are selling. That way you get that "making a run" type of deal from a base that you would get out of stuff like DayZ to go sell tons of guns you have collected to a trader.
Top Job, high quality video. Appreciate your work

in the small fishbowl, we all swim around and now we don’t think about fuel, efficiency range and operational costs as it relates to cargo hauling. But we will in the future, and a ship like the ironclad will never be able to compete with a hull series or any other efficient ship. if you truly doing cargo hauling, you’ll eat up all your profits.
Good video, thanks for the updates
Great review thanks. Just a thought on the hornet drama, this could be a long term strategy. When they release 1.0 they can't remove ships, they have been developed etc they are in the game but they still want to sell new ships in IRL. Modularity is actually counter productive to this so I don't expect to see it become the norm. This strategy of retiring ships for new also gives 3 markets in-game, new, used and classic
The Merchantman is supposed to be 160 meters long vs 120 meters for the Ironclad - Heavy Freight vs Armoured Freight. - 6 vs 8 max crew - Either way bring an escort if cargo piracy is going to be worth doing other than the fun sake of doing it.

100% agree with the Ironclad. If the Assault doesn't have the retractable roof and tractor beams, it's a deal breaker for me. Then melt that CCU. Thanks for the good work, Mike!
Wipe the Dupers clean!!
@19:33 This game continues to impress as it becomes more like a simulator than just a mere game. Adding in ammunition containers such as you would expect on a capital ship is simply logical. Warships have almost always sailed (in wet navies) with some amount of internal resupply - never just a single load for their weaponry. Capitals, if not nearly all ships, should have some amount of reloads available. The notable exception is fighters, and then I'd say the shape of this game's heavy fighters could allow them to carry a few extra rounds. Medium and light fighters, however...nope. They rely on their motherships for resupply; that's totally reasonable and in an extended combat engagement, it makes sense for them to go out, pound the enemy, and go back for more bullets; rinse and repeat. Now, do the ammo boxes explode if the magazine (ammo storage locker) gets hit? There should be a chance of secondary explosions...
Seems likely to me they'll start churning out MK2 variants with hopes the MK1 people will pay for the upgrades. As a Drake guy I like the Ironclad, but that line about getting the command module working with the Ironclad and subsequently the Caterpillar feels like they are sticking their hand out yet again to get things promised and paid before previously funded again (You DID point out the Kraken bait 👍). The Tali update seems to me to be from lack of expected sales, when was the last time they announced an upgrade to an old ship mid-show? They just get bolder with it every year 😞
hi Mike, great video!
I'm glad that with the Ironclad they seem to actually be acknowledging that in the Mad Max universe they're building, your cargo needs defence. There is no "safe space", and there probably never will be. High sec will just be Ganker City. So put some armor and big guns on your cargo. You're gonna need it. Of course they laid it on pretty thick that this is basically designed to quickly loot after a gank, further driving the point home. 22:00 They're just incapable of talking about any content for the game without the mandatory "and then maybe you get pirated". I suppose in this case it's "and then maybe you pirate someone", but it's really the same thing.
I think in terms of powercreep and the ironclad vs crusader's offerings, they should make it so that the crusader is just WAY faster in both cruise mode, combat flying mode, and in quantum travel. It should also be more fuel efficient. Crusader ships are the peak of material and engineering quality. Thus, the advanced composites of the C series ships, should make them nearly as durable (especially against energy based weapons), while remaining way lighter. The drake ironclad should be a tiny bit more armored due to the raw amount of armor steel covering it, but slow and sluggish as a brick, while also eating a lot of fuel to feed those mediocre quality engines pushing around that chunk of steel. So, for regular cargo, an ironclad should be a tiny bit more protected. But it would be way slower. For profit generation, time is important. If the crusader cargo ship can make 3 trips where the ironclad can make 2, the ironclad needs to have 50% more cargo space to make up for it. But not only that, some cargo and delivery missions might be time critical. For military transport, speed is important. If your org needs reinforcement tanks to a fight at Pyro, but they are stored in Stanton. A crusader ship might get there a lot faster just by traveling so much quicker in both quantum and when approaching the planet/moon. For smuggling, the crusader cargo fleet once again should have the advantage, with higher tech sensors, lower signature materials, and obviously by being fast, they could more easily outrun and outmaneuver patrols.
This is the 3rd of 4th time I've heard someone mention there being only one Ballistic Repeater without saying what it's called. It's the Sawbuck for anyone wondering.
The Kraken comments really rubbed me the wrong way. Why wouldn't they just say, the Ironclad and Kraken are complementing each other, but the Ironclad will come first." Or anything more positive? Given that they said the Ironclad is "enabling" the Kraken, I think they will have the Ironclad out within a year and the Kraken out by 1.0. Also, the C2 will be much more maneuverable than the Ironclad in atmosphere, so I don't consider the C2 dead at all. I did converted my M2 into an Ironclad Mil though.
I do wonder why no one is speaking about tali torp modules and hornets being removed from aEUC availability. In case of retaliator it is confusing that torpedos are again in exclusivity period. In case of hornets, mk2 is still not available for aEUC so it is also moving hornet series to $ exclusivity.

But versions of the ironclad represent player game play. Imagine having the ironclad with a vulture on the cargo area. Cruise around salvage and store the scrap in the ironclad. You can stay out longer and make more credits.
Hey Mike, quick feedback on you wanting to do more YT videos: yes, please do! In all honesty I find your YT content much more enjoyable than the the streams, the quality / “enjoyability” really improves when you have the time to think things through (even if I am still addicted to your react videos, sometimes your negative excitement is difficult to cope with). Keep up this YT content coming!
The Ironclad looks a little small to me, if you compare it to an actual cargo ship in reality. They are gargantuan and hold probably 100x or more. In space I'd expect bigger. Looks cool though :)
With the cargo update they absolutely better fix the hull C spawning inside the stations
Let's hope the Ironclad Flies sooner than later, but there are still so many fat ships floating in the backlog.
Intro song is Fugent - Lupus Nocte
The ambition is just too great. I often wonder whether or not I would still be alive when this game is finally done.
18:39 The problem is people upvote umrelated questions basically every episide, and if they gave the status of every single thing folks upvoted, we'd be wasting time better spent on shit they have more meaningful answers for. Some folks basically want a daily report about their favorite thing that's not on the Roadmap, but we only get an hour a week, so... 🤷🏿♂️ A better solution would be to add dependingies and blockers to the Progress Tracker when it returns.

So the Hercules class handles very well and has great power. The Drake ships are very slow and tanky, these ships are in their own class. The only thing the ship offers is more cargo and easier cargo feeling from space but not the ground like the Hercules class which has two entrances. Now I love this ship and I got the assault as I’m a Drake guy, I have kraken, Corsair, buc & now ironclad assault. Excited for when this ship releases!
cig....masters in keeping up hope in exchange for cash
not doubling firebirds stealth, I believe its doubling the % noise reduction modifier (20-40)
Ironclad assault. Finally another ship to haul ground vehicles!
The ship talk basically ends at 17:03, in case you too are bored of ship talk. :T
Refinery sections for the Caterpillar
DEFINITELY their turn!
15:40 i feel like you misinterpreted what was being said here. they weren't saying "we won't make the kraken unless you buy this ship" its clear enough they were saying " building the ironclad will make building the kraken easier, because of assets, design language, etc" they are building this ship to fill out their asset library and use as inspiration for the kraken. they aren't holding the kraken hostage. all they were saying was building the ironclad would make building the kraken easier... BUILDING. not BUYING.

On the one hand I understand this idea from the game dev process perspective. On the other hand, its also absolutely bullshit. I'm more inclined to see the reality as they don't want to dedicate time to a big ship like that because it will need other game systems that don't exist yet. And/or they don't yet trust the new people on the team to do a project that big in a timely manner. Also, they've been bad about it in the past, but they do seem to be trying to avoid deliberately adding tech debt now. And we haven't even touched the financial side of things. Its better for the financial health of the project to put out more small to medium sized ships than it is to put out a big ship, even if the big ship costs $3,000.

I think you misunderstand that when someone bought the kraken 4 years ago this ship wasn’t even a thought…it didn’t exist, not they have to spend 6mo to a year to make this happen before they even start a ship.
we need a ingame marked like eve online i am cool with a Wipe too it need to happen now
Ships need more windows moving forward. Way more exciting for the crew to be able to see what's happening outside
I bought some paints last night and a starter pack as a gift. There is nothing wrong with continuously supporting SC. These are the people making the game you love, and it takes money.

Did I say there was anything wrong with that? Fucking hell man you guys make up your own reality…
Uhg another wipe would suck I spent so much freaking time just getting from the starter ship I have to getting my connie doing so many bunker missions. I under stand that its something that has to happen but I don't have the cash to just buy a ship like that so it sucks when they wipe cause I am stuck with my dinky starting ship :*D
If we could in-game melt our in-game bought ships to upgrade in-game, then that would be amazing for progression and not make other cargo ships obsolete.
I sway wipe where they take off the top up to 10mil. If you have more than 10mil it drops to 10mil if you have less it doesnt affect you. Legit players are unlikely to have that much unless they just camped salvage missions since release.
Oh that's right, Fathers Day is coming... I'll offer my dad who turns 85 this year a subscription to Star Citizen. Let's see which one is buried first!
C2 is not dead. Its a 1-2 person ship vs Iron which is 4-6; engineering will really impact multi crew making C2 easy
@captain-hooked

The C2 is also a large ship which will require engineering effort. It may be usable with 1 person when using roll-on/roll-off cargo, but loading containers into it by hand without a ship tractor is going to be harder. It might be that the Ironclad can load 1500 SCU quicker than the C2 with two people.

@@captain-hooked has anyone tried loading cargo using the tractor beams? we have. in the Cat, in the C1, in the Taurus. a 2 person crew can load and unload cargo 5x better /faster and more reliably than people on tractor beams. esp when you stuff above snap, which everyone does. until they make the tractor loading actually work, Ill take my friends and the rifle tractor beam

@@Christine-shield I loved it in the taurus. Just hop seat and thats it. Just need get used to it.
I think a lot of the worry of power creep just lends itself to progression with tiers of ships. Course that is a balancing act, and we have no proof how well CIG will do that. Especially without the context of the economy behind it. But I mean that's always a thing in space, Sims. You work doing the jobs you want to get credits and reputation to get bigger, better ships.
I never liked the C-2. I got a Ironclad upgrade in my pocket. 😎
I am TOTALLY against between patch wipes! I’m so tired of getting things ready and done for a wipe , then I get hit again 1 week later by a .1 then again 2 weeks later by a .2 and so on. I’m also ok with COMPLETE wipes quarterly though
By the way, that detachability is coming to the Caterpillar!! I know they have promised it for ages, but with the Ironclad, it's happening. (So, it will be a while off yet)
Is that mug, at 26:13 CIG merch?
Polaris will be 4.0.x, which will be the IAE patch. Most likely 4.0.1, but they may need to get the 0.0.1 out before that. The IAE is in November and 4.0 will be some time in October. On Star Citizen Live, Jared asked, you are targetting the IAE, and they pointedly said, it will be out at that time. CIG doesn't usually like hard dates, so I am curious why they were so definitive on this?
Hey Mike when you mentioned the Ironclad, you were showing the Kraken. a wee tad too much CiG video blurb. But always informative videos.
