CIG really needs to start underpromising and overdelivering.

So you basically want them to be less transparent... Anything they do they have to plan for, so they either not tell you or they underdeliver. I think they're learning to expose less of their design ideas so that it doesn't happen as much anymore.

Patient is key with SC. I’m waiting over 10 years now and I rather wait another couple years to get the game good. They missed goals over and over and that’s normal when you develop something new.

What they're doing is putting in Tier Zero mechanics that they don't plan to update for a couple years, and then selling them as game-changing updates that they will "continue to iterate on". What they fail to disclose is that the part about "continuing to iterate" means "in [X] years we will revisit these when we've gotten through all the other Tier Zero items on the list". This critical omission results in an implication that they will continue to actively work on these items and update them in the near future (but this is not how Alpha development works). They are well aware of how the community interprets what they say, and they do not correct us/elaborate because it would not benefit them, and they have left enough plausible deniability to cover their behinds. This is how they are able to sell the game as playable, but excuse its flaws "because Alpha" simultaneously.

Watching the old 4.0 presentation again was quite something. Even back then I knew it wasn't going to happen, not even close. Now though, it's all on the meshing. If they really do get that into live things open up and 4.0 can become a reality.

@@HardMode.. Here since 2015. Not gonna lie, this certainly is a wild ride. But server meshing had it's proof of concept, and it really does hang on that. If that can get in, and they can make it work, which is a BIG IF. It will be worth it. It's also why they are showing all of this other stuff. So they dull out the very depressing message, that if they can't make server meshing work, this game falls apart. But if they do make it work, it will get better. If you are exhausted though, stop following the game, get a year or two away. Just live your life! :D I mean it. And one day you'll either get to go "holy shit it's in" or "Told you so" But it's not worth it to stay around if you don't enjoy it.

I really hope CIG nails the fallout/wild west type of vibe for Pyro. Especially in the gameplay. We need a lot of these small communities of NPCs on the planets, in their rugged outposts and villages. Just going about their lives, trading with you, giving out missions, and also just being potential targets for raiding. Pyro should enable the classic murder hobo gameplay, where you just kinda go around killing NPCs, taking their stuff, and selling it to other NPCs.

I actually love exploring the alternative routes when doing the distribution center investigation missions. Very atmospheric! I also came across a secret passage that led to an armory. Very cool use of alternative routes. Could come in handy in a situation where security is super tight and I’m not allowed to bring a weapon to the facility. Knowing how to get into the armory undetected could be an advantage to this concept.

Judging from the comments, but something I've seen especially lately, is that as more content approaches release, and as they make greater strides in putting features into the game that is playable today, more people are coming out of the woodwork to bash development, and steer people away from the project. It's strange that the amount of criticism the game received three or four years ago was significantly lower, with a slower development and release cycle, then it is now, with a faster one. Leads me to think there are more critics who stand to lose something if they actually follow through on their objectives, then there are ones who stand to gain something for having being proven wrong, and received the product they've complained about.

lol i remember a few years ago, i was in my sophmore year of college and I had my gaming pc for just as long; at that point just really wanting to play something other than Overwatch. I checked out Star citizen and read up about patch 3.8 and how essential Server Side Object Container Streaming would be the first step to making foundational tech that can make Star Citizen a playable game. For me i ended up playing Elite Dangerous (and then getting heavily into EFT for 3 years) because Elite Dangerous was very smooth and offered what i was looking for in a solo space experience in an "mmo" environment (multiplayer interactions for a solo cargo hauler that feels like i'm playing Rebel Galaxy). Star Citizen today finally looks like it has the content and playability for me to have that essential experience i'm looking for. ofc there's still the jank and stutters and crashes, expected of SC and i'm still limited on my same PC i had all those years ago. But just jumping in the free flight now, it's way better than it was 2 years ago. I was very tempted to buy the Avenger titan WB this sale as it's the best starter ship for how i'd play the game as a beginner to start out with. BUT, Star Citizen isn't just what it is right now, it's the scope of what it's going to be. I appreciate this breakdown of 4.0 and I'm very interested to watching updates on the game in the future and if SC has what it takes to be a game that'll be fun to play for as long as it's been in development. Your segment on Space Stations and Outposts was INCREDIBLY insightful, you pulling out your archive of promo material of 2020 and how that same (that was then, this is where we are now) in terms of the literal progress in their development is very impressive. (Edit: Wow, also the segment on MFD - the highlight on QT, which i must say is a VERY interesting system for SC to stand out even just a little bit from Elite; especially since they want a Super Cruise equivalent that entirely has this QT Failure mechanic) Thank you for having such a passion to these details and sharing that with us. But yeah, as i was saying, i personally do hold alot of anticipation for server meshing and how that tech enables smoother gameplay for budget pc players like myself; that'll influx the player base and all that talk about here 7:15 - making the game a playable game people want to come back to regardless of wipes ( i'm assuming the removal of wipes will be a thing for the 1.0 true launch) because the gameplay loop is "fun" by all markers. I'll look at 4.0 and get a hands on experience with server meshing on another free fly event before making a decision to pledge to the game. Even if I don't see a huge performance jump myself, at the very least if the game is playable for others then i can eye ball "hey, people who will play this game will be people with modern pcs. i'll pledge the game when i make a new pc".

I'm not expecting too much beyond what was in the roundup for 4.0. However, for the smaller things being ported from SQ42 like EVA push/pull, I think there's a chance it comes in a 3.23.x patch. For stuff unique to SC, I'm just hopeful they get the stuff in that they said they would.

It's perfectly possible. They are waiting to release SQ42 before showing any of the systems in it but those are already done. They only need to move them to PU and integrate them with multiplayer systems, which is't easy at all but it's easier than making systems from scratch. After SQ42 is released, we'll see the quick release of multiple systems until they catch up. Then I have no idea how long it will take. In theory they had teams specifically to make systems fast.

You love planets, and exploring planets, and good fiction with a lot of detail about the planets, read some Peter F. Hamilton. It's space opera of the highest caliber, with some of the coolest ideas in science fiction. Whenever the story transitions to a new planet for the first time, hell spend several pages giving a brief history of the planet, often including it's discovery, strange quirks that make it unique, settlement and colonization, how an economy developed and how it fits into the greater setting of the Commonwealth. It's really a masterclass world building and and, even with the cool, fantastical sci-fi elements, makes them feel like real places with rich history. Not to mention the tech, weapons, ships, aliens, etc., are all just SO damn cool! Pandora's Star was my first introduction to his work. Great North Road was also phenomenal.

The biggest problem for a good start without any further wipes is the balancing still isnt done, multicrew isnt done. So, we have no idea, what are advantages and major disadvantages on your ships. And for us to try out all that stuff, we need an ingame economy to get to stuff quickly. And that needs to stay for now, simply for testen reasons. There are so many problems that arent adressed. I think CIG needs to get it right that people dont get their major tantrums about how those Shops are bought in game. Even with the latest Patch I dont see that this is the right economy Balance and the whole point of a cool, big capital ship being a longterm group effort and absolute endgame, etc. There is so much to clarify and build before we can properly start a persistent game. I want the game badly, but we are so further out in balancing and economy. And starting with a bugged economy and no clue, if all Shops are already at their intended places is wild. Dont do this, CIG! 😅

Gameplayloops wont be implemented heavily without all the core tech implemented. The tech-trash-creep would be way to big to ever clean up. If you cant enjoy the buggy, junky, Alpha-state then just wait for around two more years at least. Before then the polishing wont even be started yet. And the polishing alone will take years with a Game this enorme

The space stations in Pyro are way better designed than the procedural mess that is the Stanton stations. Are the Stanton stations going to stick around or will they get reworked? Another thing that bugs the hell out of me in the current build of the game is the elevators going sideways at the speed of light and being able to go to every hangar. Didn't elevators years ago each only go to one hangar? That's why there are so many elevator doors. But in the current build, there is only like two elevators per location and they just jump around to the different hangars and elevator entrances in the spaceport.

IF we get to the point we trust this will be a long term successful game with really interesting gameplay loops that make us feel like logging every day or few days, they will be one of the most important assets. @ncpolley If you take the full picture into account, not really. Company didn't even exist, then tried to make arguably the most ambitious game ever, crowdfunded, without even knowing what their budget would be. Plus another very ambitious single player game at the same time. I don't know how long it takes to build an international company with over 1000 employees, but it doesn't happen overnight, no matter how much money you have. When SQ42 finally comes out, it will be easier to evaluate how CIG has spent their time. But as long as it doesn't feel like something that was slapped together in a year, I'd say they've done pretty well actually. The only thing I would unequivocally say they mismanaged is expectations. Theirs and ours. But tbh I don't hold it against them too much. I'm glad they stayed somewhat fluid and kept expanding the project as the money kept rolling in. I just wish they didn't throw out those ridiculously impossible release projections early on, because I'm tired of hearing people complain about it.

With some very niche exceptions you wouldn't have ships in EGS or SE that would need to have the power managed like this. If you did they would just be poor builds. Thats true. But the difference between CIG and you is that CIGs problem is that it made a dramatically overoptimistic promise. Yours is that you took six months to do what every plumber could have done in two days. Is that claim that, budget and team size being equal, anyone else could have finished Star Citizen in two years like they promised? Because if that's what you're claiming, then I don't have any idea where you're getting that. But if you're claiming that it's simply immoral to make a promise you aren't sure you can keep, and (besides that) it's immoral not to take some measure of accountability for that failure in a way that doesn't simply demand more of the person you made the promise to, then yes. I totally agree.

I honestly just wish they'd spend more than 5 minutes per update to get the very base functions of the game working. So far in 3.23 my experience has been: 1. Putting something from your inventory into a storage box, works 1/10th of the time, and you have to relog for a CHANCE that you'll be able yo put another item in before it breaks again. 2. I spent 15 minutes today trying to equip a chest piece. First it was on the ground, pressed equip, it equipped, and then fell to the ground again by itself. Then I tried to equip from carrying it, it worked for 2 seconds, then it transfered itself into my hands again, I did both of these steps 50+ times at least.. Then the chest piece got bugged in my hands so I couldn't drop it, I spent 5 minutes and two relogs just trying to drop it because it kept me from doing ANYTHING ELSE in the game... 3. Routing still isn't working, I've done like 40-50 missions so far, ranging from bounties and delivery missions, and I was only able to route directly to the target ONE TIME in all those missions, the rest of the time I had to spend 10-20 minutes PER mission objective because the best the game would let me do was quantum to another point past where I was going and hoping I could get close enough by cancelling the quantum to decrease the travel time. Today I literally spent 2+ hours doing one 10k delivery mission for three boxes and a drop location... 2 hours.. 10k... I am honestly fine with CIG taking their time with releasing big content updates, but for the love of god, make the BASICS work at least... I've honestly played janky Russian asset flip games with more polish than most Star Citizen patches...

To be fair, most of those issues are because you're playing during Invictus week. The servers are clogged with thousands of free players and everything moves to a crawl. I'm an OG pledge with an Omega in my hangar, I've checked regularly on the game for 10+ years, and the sour truth is after all those years, even at the best of times, the very basics are rarely functional. This isn't a case of just laggy servers, this is a case of poor optimization of base mechanics. CIG said they were going to develop the game in a modular way, and yet every patch seems to break the same things over snd over. At this point, i honestly think we should be able to expect stable base functionality.

ATM though, it's so painful to experience and bugs make it a waste of time.
