I finally got a yarn winder and decided to go with the Stanwood Jumbo Yarn winder. In this video, I go over why I chose this yarn winder, test different types of yarn in different packaging, and share one big problem (and the solution) I encountered.

Before using your yarn ball winder, stick an empty paper towel tube on the winder and then wind your yarn. By doing this it will make it easier to remove your cake from the yarn winder. Then you can use a a paper towel holder as a yarn cake dispenser. Or if you if have you have a spare/empty toilet paper tube and a separate toilet paper dispenser you could place your cake of yarn on it and use that as a yarn cake dispenser as well. It can be helpful, but not necessary.

After MANY disappointing yarn winders, I purchased the Stanwood Jumbo Yarn winder. LOVE IT!!! Love it so much I bought their swift. FABULOUS!!!!! Be still my heart 🙂
Thank you so much!!! I had been having issues with the winder getting loose. Found out I didn’t have the washer in the right place.
This is the most informative video I’ve seen, and I’ve watched soooo many, about yarn winders. Coming from you as a new owner and still remembering the tiny points that veterans of yarn winders may have forgotten about the first impressions. Im looking forward to getting a jumbo winder thanks to the info you’ve provided. Thank you!

I have a Stanwood winder I love it! I use the little girl hair barrettes that you bend in the middle to snap closed. Not sure of the name of these barrettes are open centered and cheap!thin slim and keep the loose end of your yarn tidy and neat.most dollar stores carry them TFS!!!!

Oooh, great idea!
I've had a ball winder for 6 years and have used it a lot. It's one of the inexpensive ones. I think I paid 39 dollars for it and it's not very big but it does the job beautifully. I learned a lot from you regarding rewinding the cakes after they collapse. Thanks. Great video and info

Thank you for sharing your experience with your yarn winder. Your cakes look beautiful!

One difficulty of using center of a big cake is that they collapse and tangle as you get near the last quarter. But you could break the yarn and rewind it.
I broke the clamp on my Stanwood winder, trying to clamp it around the "lip" on the underside of the edge of the card table in my kitchen. Stanwood was really good about sending me a replacement clamp, but I have yet to attach the new clamp. I have since added a desk with a thin tabletop to my craft room, and would like to use my winder there. (In my kitchen, I would have to clamp it to the cutting board built-in to my kitchen cupboards.)
Have had this winder now for almost 7 years. It's been a work horse. Never a glitch other than user caused ever. A bit of sewing machine oil now and again is the only maintenance mine has needed to date. I agree with the toilet paper and/or paper towel tube suggestions below.
Great video - love your energy.! I have a heavy duty, large capacity yarn winder. An unknown brand bought on the secondary market VERY reasonably. It is so “wonky” no matter what I do, it just doesn’t work right. Perhaps why it was so “reasonable” ? I have a small winder my husband gifted me 10 or so years ago which has been terrific but holds only 4 ounces and my needs have changed. After seeing the simplicity of the Stanwood & the nice cakes you made with it, I am ordering this yarn cake winder today. Thank you for posting this good and honest evaluation.! 🥰

Hey, nothing wrong with getting a good deal! I just figured I'd go big from the get go and be done with it haha
I cake my crochet thread to make hooked on sunshine patterns. its great but i advise recakeing once the center gets opened about 4 inches to prevent knot meyham when the cake collapses
I have an electric yarn winder. It does a pound of yarn. Love it. When I wind yarn I put the bowl or pan on the floor and the ball doesn’t fly around.

Hey there, I was trying to find the video where you say you asked a lot of question about getting a yarn winder. Was that on a blog or in a youtube video? I'm looking for a smaller more moderately priced winder. I'm a quilter who only dabbles with yarn so I don't need to spend the big bucks.

Excellent review unfortunately I’m in the uk and this actual winder has risen significantly in price so out of my price range plus I only wind 100g at a time so no need for a 10 oz one. Please can you make a review on a nice quiet wooden winder?

I don't currently have plans to get a smaller yarn winder since the jumbo one works well for smaller quantities too, but if I ever end up getting a smaller one I'll be sure to review it!
I have this same brand and I like using it to find any knots in the skeins. I hate working on a project and then having to stop to cut out a knot. I do a Russian Join when I find a knot in my yarn. When I do this, I KNOW there won't be any knots. I also hold my yarn between two fingers as it feeds to keep tension on it but also to feel the knots. If you get cranking really fast and don't have your fingers on the yarn a knot might slip past. About 5 yrs. ago, my son asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I showed him this and he said, "No problem." This was the best Christmas gift I ever got. I absolutely love it.

Yes, I've noticed that about the tangles and making sure the skein isn't broken! Used to I never encountered broken sections in yarn skeins, but the last two years it's been happening to me more and more across all yarn brands. Sounds like your son knows your love language- crochet!
Hi, I have a question. Doesn't the wool get damaged when it is rolled up compared to the skein ? Because the strand is tighter.
@CraftersAutonomous
Жыл бұрын
Great question! You will find lots of opinions on this. Some people say it's bad to wind yarn too tight, and they speak from personal experience and from knowledge on how yarn is created. However, I've never had issues with yarn that I've wound tightly. I used to roll all my yarn into balls, and that was actually much tighter than the yarn winder. This would also likely depend on what type of yarn you are using. With natural fiber yarn, I would think this could be a bigger problem. But I mostly work with durable acrylic-type yarns that seem to hold up pretty well. So I think technically there's a risk of damaging the yarn, but if I've damaged my yarn from winding it I've never noticed and it's never caused any problems for me. :)

@@CraftersAutonomous OK. I will try to rewind my yarn and I will see if it's problematic. Thank you for answer. Happy knitting :) and hello from France
Tying yarn together is better and continuous if you tie the new yarn to the old yarn with a knot then take the old yarn end and tie a knot just below the new yarn knot and pull tight against each other then cut the tails, usable continuous yarn that won't come apart. 💖💖😄😄💖💖

I love joining my scrap yarn like that to make a magic yarn ball! If I'm using the same color yarn, I sometimes find those joins to be more noticeable. But this method is certainly a solid option for joining yarn! Thanks for watching.
I would love to get a yarn winder, but I don't need it because I don't have that much yarn. I don't want to get a lot of yarn because of space issues, so it's not much of a need.

I'd love to know how it works out for you! I actually looked at this one first since I had gift cards for HL, but the reviews for it on the app weren't very promising. So I got a little scared to try it haha
If you put the yarn you want to wind on a lower level than the yarn-winder then the eye of the winder and then use your finger to guide the yarn you'll find a little even wine nicer or easier and be more efficient try it next time

Understandable! This was something I had a hard time with too. The counter worked out really well for me, but it's not always the most convenient spot to cake yarn. So I'm trying to come up with another place to attach the winder but haven't come up with anything good yet.

Sad you felt the need to kill the spider 😞 it's got as much right to life as you
Real Wool , even as low as 30% , make a yarn a dream to work with. Acrylic performs very poorly in comparison. Stitch definition is much better.
Why was your auto reaction to kill the spider. Bit rough.

I was definitely in that camp myself for a long time! Definitely not a cheap purchase. But with the stage I'm at with my crochet, I've been extremely satisfied with this purchase. It's helped me organize my yarn so much better and makes for an easier experience for me personally. But of course a purchase like this is a very individual decision. Gotta weigh the pros and cons and decide if it makes sense for you. And if it doesn't, that's perfectly fine! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
I really want one now. 🐞🧶💕
