🔧 Stan’s shifter mod aka shifter reinforcement // Lotus Elise & Exige

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I’ll show you how to do the famous Stan’s shifter mod in order to reinforce the shifter bracket assembly for improved shifting feel. The shift feel on the Lotus Elise and Exige varies a lot car to car and many people complain about sloppy shifter feel. This can cause you to miss shifts in high speed situations like at the racetrack. This simple and easy modification helps to eliminate that and improves the accuracy of your shifts.
Note: this applies to all S2 Elise and Exige models, although there are some variations in the later cars as to how the shifter bracket is designed from the factory. This video shows the setup on a 2005 Lotus Elise.
If you prefer a written version of this modification, you can find some helpful threads here:

Stan’s official instructions:

Variation:

You’ll need a few parts listed below from your local hardware store:
- M8x50 mm (1.25 pitch) hex. head bolt
- ~3-4mm spacer (I used a hex junction, cut to size with a hacksaw) OR stack of ~around fifteen ⅞” washers
Note: you can print a 3D one here:
www.thingiverse.com/thing:886145
- ⅞” washer for under the head of the bolt (Stan’s instructions say 1.5” washer there but then you have to cut part of the washer away, easier to just use a smaller one)

Nice! The bigger washer should have more leverage against motion in the shifter support. I had one on both the top and bottom sides of the support. I would (and did) put a big washer on the floor to keep the pressure on the aluminum surface as low as possible. You can also do the whole think without removing the console cover so you don't have to break the zip tie holding the boot to the lever. Nicely done with the felt! My most commonly used tool on this car :)

That is a great tip, especially about not needing to remove the console all the way and avoiding cutting that zip tie. I hate dealing with the zip tie, second time I've done it (first was installing the carbon fiber console.)

Thanks for the video! I noticed you had the OBD Link LX, how do you like it? Looking at buying one for my Elise to. Curious if it does pretty well with Lotus specific data/codes?

Thanks for watching! Yeah the OBD Link LX works great, but I don't get any Lotus specific stuff AFAIK, just the standard OBD2 codes. I used the app Torque but maybe there is something better that I should try?

Nice video as always! Quick question, do you happen to know the specs of the small screw which holds the plastic "cubby" down to the back section of the center console? (The screw you are putting in at about 8:20 in the video). Mine is missing and I've been meaning to replace it

Thanks for watching! I don't but on Deroure.com (my go to for parts diagrams) it shows at part #20 on this diagram: deroure.com/diagrams.asp?TBL=12271&MAK=1&MDL=11&SMA=0&SMO=0&ST=&SC=0 The description is: Screw, No. 6 x 3/8", flg. pozi., console to bracket I recall it being a self-tapping style screw. Pozi is that weird philipp's head similar thing.

nicely done! 👍🏻 just a question... you know, I'm not a mechanic but I'm really interested in these kind of things. I just want to know, wouldn't it be better to use a plastic washer between that bolt (the big one 😅) & the metal part of center console?

I mean it could make that connection so tighter. couldn't it?

Yeah, in fact there is a link in the description for a 3D printed one out of plastic. I do think a strong plastic piece would work well and save weight!

@@AtypicalDriver in an already made car, I don't think that the weight of a nut make any difference! 😂 I think it's better to mix both ideas. I'm not really sure, but I think a metal nut and maybe a plastic (or rubber) washer at the both ends of bolt could be a good idea. (I can't say how much weight that it gonna handle, but with considering that it's the part of center console and *could* have some weight on it, I think you could put a set screw at pith of that tall nut.)
