Stalatube X Pekka feat. Jamie Hyneman | Part 2. The Roll-Over Test
Ғылым және технология
In the series' second part, Pekka and Jamie embark on a journey to Spain. Their objective is to study the performance of stainless steel hollow sections used in the transportation industry. This test takes place within a real testing facility situated in Spain.
Pekka and Jamie will place a bus framework constructed from mild steel alongside another made from Lean Duplex onto a platform. Subsequently, both frameworks will be intentionally tipped into a pit, providing insight into how these structures fare under rigorous testing conditions.
The core of Pekka and Jamie's study lies in comparing the high-strength stainless steel bus body structure with the mild steel counterpart. This comparison encompasses aspects of strength, elongation, and the capacity to absorb energy when subjected to a roll-over test. An overarching question emerges: Do both tested bus body frameworks meet the standards set by the R66 test?

Whoever is doing marketing for Stalatube is a genius!! This is the best I have seen. All the kids who grew up watching mythbusters, which inspired them to become engineers, are now seeing this... It's amazing. I saw a couple people complain that it's a commercial, but it's also entertainment.. I'm not in the market for tubing, but I'm still going to watch the next one.

The bus tipping test could have been explained with some animation so that the viewer can know where to look, until the end of first MS structure test I didn't know what to look for, I was thinking we are crusing against something in the machine, not simply waiting for tipping over a bus like structure
Why the quick cuts on the stainless steel test but not on the steel one.

I saw a review for a stainless steel mountain bike the other day (made by Starling Cycles) and I was wondering, do you guys make round section, custom specification butted tubes for building bikes etc or just square section, plain gauge? I guess if a large enough manufacturer approached you it might be worth your while but what about a small frame builder?

Cost might have something to do with it. Normal steel is certainly much cheaper and could get more per cost vs other types of metals. Not to mention easier to work with.

The acquisition costs of stainless steel may be higher, but the life cycle costs are much lower than carbon steel. Stainless steel is a sustainable choice.
