Let's hope that this is the start of something big. Gravel/MTB maration racing coverage arguably is in its infancy, but it seems so promising. May this American style of racing grow as big as European road cycling!

How was this great coverage? They told us the whole point was to see if Keegan was going to break the course record. Nearly all the footage of the men's race was of Keegan and they didn't tell us if he broke the record. Seems like shit coverage to me.

Great recap, Janelle and Kimo! It’s cool to see the attacks in real time. You can’t feel the suffering from the helo vantage point, but I remember that plenty well.

@ervin7178 he's raced the mixed relay at worlds and won silver. He has his share of MTB national championships as a junior and senior rider. It seems gravel and ultra long MTB races are a lot more interesting to him though. 20yrs ago, marathon MTB races were a lot longer than they are now and would have suited him better.

need to adopt coverage style for trail runners during week of mont blanc utmb / gtws (golden trail world series) ...having the alps as a stage backdrop is hard to beat tho

I learned something about the Leadville Trail 100 MTB just now. It's long and it's steep, that much I already knew. But why do they have 'Trail' and 'MTB' in the name? I learned why roadies win it - it is a dirt road course. Does anybody know if there is any single track? If so, how long is it? Did any of the bikes have suspension forks? Whatever - the bird's eye view certainly removed any mystique that I had imagined. It's just a tedious grind.

Great coverage, but a small nitpick.. I think Ruth Winder actually goes by “Ruth Edwards” these days after marrying Zach Edwards, the ace bike mechanic from Boulder Grupetto.

They are riding mountain bikes, but that is a road race. No mtb terrain?

Yes, Lifetime Fitness. They have run Leadville for many years now.

Interesting that they don’t highlight the course record being broken by 15 minutes. Yeah, I wouldn’t play that up either. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. As a commenter below said, “Keegan Lance Armstronged the 💩 out of everyone!”

Keegan’s time was about 45 minutes faster than Lance’s best time after racing the Tour and admittedly doping. I hope Keegan is racing clean but beating one of the best cyclist ever, while doping, sure makes me wonder how he does it.

So much for leadville being grassroot racing, heli and everything. Zero desire to participate now.

Hmmm After doing the inaugural race (maybe 30 of us?) and then the year Discovery Channel took over, watching these big $ event productions bleed the spiritual character of another OG humble mountain race feels weird. Like drones are not permitted but a heli with two commentators is fine? not feeling inspired to return yet apparently many others are. 🤷🏽‍♂ One thing is certain; KS is a freakin’ beast! 🙏🏾

Awesome coverage but the presenters really need to learn how to pronounce all of the riders' names.

You're totally right! But sometimes it takes a while to talk about the lungs, heart, veins, mind etc when hovering over the race as the action heats up!

Horrible idea to have the commentators in a helicopter, the sound was bad, the shot was bad and it made the video unwatchable. Also side note, that's Horrible for the environment.

Why would I want a shot of two people in a helicopter?

Pretty much a gravel race. Who wants to ride fire roads on a mountain bike? Not me

To each their own…don’t ride it if you’re not inclined. Plenty of others are drawn to the challenge, however. I rode it once and have the buckle, so I’ll say it this way: I don’t have great memories of the Leadville riding per se, but I will never forget the experience. There is the pre-race stuff, the town, the majesty of the start, and the fun of getting your buckle and finisher’s jacket. But the real reason to do this race is to see what you’re made of and prove that you can go far beyond what your legs are willing to do. With a bit of honesty, it’s also to brag to every MTBer you ride with that you did Leadville. BTW, if you want a truly ripping singletrack race experience, try Pierre’s Hole. It will not disappoint.

Not only is the helicopter audio kinda horrible, the carbon emissions from the helicopter are incredibly excessive and unnecessary.
