That is the thing I noticed at big venues like Sports arenas. The musicians exaggerated all their movements and I had to consider if they playd like we do in smaller clubs it would be lost in translation.

Well said, Malmsteen is def unrivaled as far as Guitar performance on stage. The way he keeps kicking, running around and throwing the guitar around is crazy. Great video. Stage presence is always the main thing I strugle with. I especially agree with the part about large movements, because often times when on stage I feel like I am doing some movements, but when I rewatch the video of my performance I realise that I look like a robot haha

My problem is that it’s hard for me to try to perform and be charismatic and play complicated parts at the same time. And also how do I not just do the same things over and over. The tip about making a stage persona is a good one though

Great advice

I saw Malmsteen last Sunday in London, easily the most charismatic guitarist I've ever seen on stage. He really moves around a lot, kicks, spins, lots of cool moves. To be fair I feel this is almost a lost art, modern guitarists really don't do this, it used to be a lot more common in the 80s judging from old videos I've seen.

Absolutely spot on. A lot of the younger crowd just seem to stand there and maybe even look at the fretboard when they play. It's a bit boring imo.

My thing, I was extremely humorous onstage, and sold out (standing room only) CBGB's 313 gallery. One of the greatest sets I EVER saw was this great guitarist who didn't do ANYTHING but sit in a chair and play an acoustic electric guitar. CBGBs 313 Gallery (right next door to Cbs original)... sometimes the music speaks for itself. He wasn't even booked to play that night, someone canceled so this guy showed up, and for some reason was almost hiding his face in his left underarm. I kid you not. I asked Hilly's girlfriend "WHO WAS THAT??" Buckethead. No bucket. He wasn't world famous yet. In fact, I'd just been sent his first home studio 4 track recording to review for an East Village rag. I did not review it. While the guitar playing was masterful, his talking about chickens (I kid you not) over the entire CD ep was so annoying and distracting. Look at Paco DeLucia. He sat on a chair and was just as entertaining as Yngwie. Paco didn't need to do anything: his fingers dancing all over the fretboard made this 8 year old prick up her ears. And his smile said it all. Just my honest opinion. Now, Vai has been my favorite performer since , well I loved his playing ever since hearing Envelopes... but he really got into "performing" with Dave Roth. However, I could watch Steve just stand or sit and play all day, even if he never licked his guitar strings while turning on the Sustainer feedback. 😉 You, too. Your personality and playing are enough. Btw, Buckethead was extraordinary without the bucket and mask.

Zakk Wylde certainly has a HUGE stage presence!

Hello. I have a question if you can help me, well actually a couple... I am playing the Beatles in a tribute band and I am criticized for various things... 1) I am John Lennon and I use to sing pop rock so they say I don't have the rock power in my voice 2) my guitar is not solid in rhythm when I sing. 3) they say I am too shy on stage, like a nervous deer... Bambi. What can I do?

1. Find a vocal teacher, or someone like Ken Tamplin online. 2. Film yourself when you play and sing. Practice it. Just 15 minutes per day will help you a lot, but do it consistently. 3. Try to step out of that role. Find musicians you like on stage, and copy some of the stuff they do. Slowly but surely you'll get better. Hope that helps.
