Welcome to the Letterman KZread Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. These highlights have been artisanly-produced, carefully-curated, and chosen completely at random by an old computer that used to pick numbers for the New York Lotto back in the 90’s.

Hal's direction was such a crucial element to what made Late Night funny. The way he'd cut to some random bystander during a bit was a signature move that always worked. Really innovative and inspired direction.
One of my favorite Late Night lines: "The good thing about New York is when it rains it makes its own gravy."
It warms my heart to hear Hal's voice.
Hal seems like a genuinely good guy.

Pretty sure you're just saying that in hopes of getting close to his wife. Get in line, buddy.
That skit was so ridiculous, with the table flipping and "You can't sleep through the honeymoon!" Really great to see some classic clips that showcased just how clever and risk-taking Dave's crew could be. I was hoping to see some Hal Gurnee's Network Time Killers (the one where they went to the Laundromat was my favorite) but maybe another time.
These are stellar events in TV history. You’re a treasure Hal!
Man, what a joy to see Hal again! That was the beauty of watching the show - it would incorporate so much of its behind-the-scenes personnel into appearing on camera and making it all the funnier for it.
"...Porky's 5, and let me tell you, I have never laughed harder in my life" . 80s comedy gold!
Hal Gurtner (it's Gurney, Dave) was incredibly important to the success of Late Night. His understanding of how to capture what was going on and what to focus the camera on was invaluable. Under a different director, much of the comedy would be lost. God bless that man. P.S. I loved the film festival shows. I'm sure they were a ton of work but man were they worth it.
Great to see Hal! The Emmy award winning director and legendary race car driver.
This is so great. I'm hoping we get a lot more of these "Staff Favorite Moments" videos. Really hoping for a Biff Henderson one.
Hal! You're a legend! You presided over some of the most innovative comedy on TV. You should be very proud of every moment. You entertained me as a teenager staying up late on Fridays and during summer break to watch Letterman. Thank you, sir!
Please keep these staff favorites coming, they're wonderful! Thank you!
Laughed every time Dave called him Hal Gurtner.

I was just scanning all these comments to see if anyone else laughed when he did that. It was such a small thing!
Happy 99th Birthday today to Hal Gurnee! 🎂
Dave's expresión at 8:04 after he says "I'm going to make that woman mine!" still gives me a good chuckle.
It's wonderful and a bit surreal seeing Dave, Paul and Biff in what resembles a 1980s movie. Judging by this, if Dave would have had the interest and motivation back then, he could have just as easily starred in his own sitcom or string of comedy movies.
Glad to see Hal is still with us
Priceless. Thank you, Dave and the Late Night team!
My favorite thing about the Film Festival skit is that Dave still refers to her as "Mrs. Hal Gurnee" even after he marries her.
Mr. Gurnee was one of Television's Live Directors, creative minds and risk takers. His contributions to Late Night Television were Epic. Thank-You for featuring this wonderful Gentleman and his Legendary work.
Andy's bit with Lawler is one of the greatest moments in TV history
Mr. Gurnee is one of Television's great minds. A "Live" (as it happens) Directing Pioneer who worked with most of Late Night Television's Best. He both started and ended his Career at the right time. Thank-You for sharing.
Who remembers that silly segment "What's Hal wearing?" 🤣

KZread just got a whole lot better ... that was great!
Hysterical!! Good to see you, Hal!! Awe!!
It didn't occur to me that "Yes Dave" was a nod to 2001: A Space Odyssey until I was 40 years old.
I missed this the first time around! This is one of the funniest Letterman sequences I’ve ever seen! I’m glad this is been posted.
Oh, How wonderful it is to see Mr. Gurtner (as Dave would say before Hal would correct him). I remember Andy and Jerry. The Only difference is NOW they added BLACK Boxes over Andy's mouth. My how times have changed.
Hal Gurnay! So happy to see him.
Love that kayfabe brother!
Holy f.....!!! I swore Hal had died ages ago. To know he's alive is the highlight of my day. It feels like seeing an old friend, and you don't say that about a lot of TV directors. But he was such a great part of the show's bits.
It's Hal Gurtner! What are you wearing today, Hal? Khakis
Great to see Hal again. It looks like he's still wearing the blue shirt. It's a shame we couldn’t catch a glimpse of the tan chinos. I'd love to see staff memorable moments from Biff, Gerry Mulligan and Chris Elliott. It's sad that Pete Fatovich is no longer with us. I'm sure he'd include "cold shoulder and hot tongue. " 😄😄😄

and yet how odd that at 1:18 Andy Kaufman *is* wearing the traditional Hal Gurnee uniform :)
Hal is a legend, and every bit a first class performer in how he contributed to the show.
Man I so loved this show. its great to see these clips
These Letterman segments are FANTASTIC! keep it up!
"Blue Shirt, Tan Chinos, Brown Loafers..." Hal Gurnee.
Great to see Hal! Glad he's in good health.
The skit with Dave falling in love w Hal's wife was priceless !! SCTV comes to Letterman.... 🚬😎
Hal a legend of early tv and unsung hero of the classic letterman. He was as much a producer as director in the early days. Oh and poor uncle milty with that honker and an unsatisfied lady.
Wow. Great to see Hal is still with us.
One of my ultimate role models. Would love to come back someday as Hal, I really mean this. He was at the vanguard of modern comedy. And to have a steady gig at Rock Center on that show, would have been magical.
Late Night was like a cable public access show that somehow was being broadcast on network television.
Excellent! I am glad Hal is living a great retirement! I will pray for America. Please pray for me. God Bless you.
This man is a genius!
The greatest short film of all time. And Hal Gurnee, also one of the alltime greats.
Let's not forget the GE Handshake...
Nothing on TV today feels as fresh or as compelling.
Glad to see Hal Gertner doing well!
Lots of good clips here at the beginning. But that boss's wife bit went on forever.
Genius
This channel is stepping up its game.
Look kids, it's Hal Gurtner!
What a humble guy. Gushes about Dave's work, and never once mentions his own legendary racing career.

Emmy award winning director and race car driver Dan Gurney!
lol This was great.
That film with Hal's wife was brilliant--never seen that one before. Please post Harry Shearer's film "The Making of 'You Wouldn't Believe Our World'"

That was at least the 4th time I've seen it. Pretty sure I even have it on tape somewhere.
Hey! It’s Hal Gertner!
Hal Gurtner!
This is hilarious
6:09 Funny thing is, Dave's father WAS a florist...
Mrs.Hal Gurtner
Hal Griswald is my favorite tv director.
He said hi to Dave like Dave has dementia and this is a 50 First Dates tape
Oh God, hilarious!
I cant believe I never heard of this
"Hal Gurtner, ladies and gentlemen, our..." "Gurnee." "...director. Hal Gurtner..." "Dave?" "Yes, Hal." "It's Gurnee." "I'm sorry, Hal Gurnee, ladies and gentlemen."
Was that Andy or Bob Zmuda as Tony Clifton? Sounded more like Bob to me?

I agree
I always wished I could have went to Uncle Dave's show before he retired.
Fantastic sketch, brilliantly played and executed. Who wrote it?
dave conflating late night with the late show is bit like bob newhart confusing the bob newhart show and newhart.
Dang, I remember seeing this new. Totally fooled me.
Gurtner. The big Gurt.
The title is wrong. His name is Hal Gurtner.
Mean Gene darting across the screen at 3:02? Or am I seeing things
Was Hal wearing the blue shirt and brown chinos?
Can you upload the Rupert Jee and Leonard Tepper skits
The first one minute of Dave on the street was the best. not the rest of this video.
Some SCTV influence here.
Wonder if Hal is wearing tan loafers in this interview?
Geez, it's Gurtner* as I heard from Dave many times. Or is it Gurner? Gardner?
Soap episode!
😮
Hal's wife looks like Conan O'brien

The fact that one person liked this is so damn validating to me. I wish it was Conan himself.
Why didn't Woody Allen ever appear as a guest on the show?
@9:02 I feel like Larry Sanders stole this bit
Thanks Letterman Et Al 🙂 Andy Kaufman (SNL?) actually Wrestling wispy, clearly pregnantt women ...? Jim Carrey did an interestingly well done what, Biopic?😁
Chevy Chase!
Ernie
Dave’s acting deserved a better script, something more like Brokeback Mountain.
Apparently some of those skits weren't as funny as I remembered them to be.
Wow, that whole sketch about Hal's wife which was half the runtime, was terrible. Except for the part when Biff punched Dave, and then that bit at the end about her being Milton Berle's girlfriend.
I like Letterman, but that was pretty lame.
Sorry, fans of Dave. The whole Mrs. Gurney thing was creepy and not unfunny at all. It wasn’t just unpleasant, the premise itself was just not funny. The only interesting part was the possibility that Dave was making fun of his own (now past) womanizing with that bit.
Hal…. I’m 70 years old… We look like twins… I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing!?!? 🫣
