Annie Clark has got to be one of the most brilliant musicians I've ever come across. Not to mention gorgeous! Her talent is so influential, you can see it just through the words of her listeners. It'd be an honour to ever meet a musician like her!

Sure shes good but seriously, you should extend your musical interest. So many brilliant artist playing similar kinda vibe.
She graduated from my high school in 2001. I graduated in 1997. Missed her by 4 years. What a thrill it would have been to walk the halls at the same time.
The lyrics to this song already made it clear but the visuals excellently lay bare the intricacies of human scrutiny and how people, especially artists, are raised to the top and then dismantled without any notice owing to an insincerely discerning audience. Also the human gaze can break one apart in multiple ways. What a powerful concept . It made me love the visuals even more. Pre- Masseduction St. Vincent videos truly stand out with their dissections of society.
I remember when I was in 6th grade and found this song and was instantly inspired to speak up for myself and walk away from the bullies which helped me realize that all the little people I surround myself with weren't the ones holding me down, I could always get up and leave.

Absolute fave St. Vincent song (with Black Rainbow 2nd). I don't find this video odd. Maybe she's interpreting being trapped inside a person she's not, and feeling constrained by what other people expect of her. A lot of us can relate to that in some aspect.

And it has crystalized over time into one of the best of her many great live songs - it just slaps so hard live, especially on this current tour.
It's so lovely to see comments on every one of Annie's videos with meaningful interpretations of each song. It can be hard to find new music which provokes that type of response, rather than inane arguments or fangirling. Annie is a true artist.

Great observation 🙌
The narrator feels this anxiety that there’s always an audience around her, eyes on her and controlling her. Even though she is the main attraction, pretty and big and porcelain, she wants to break away from forcing herself to be that perfect cheerleader everybody expects her to be; not only looking and acting like one, but feeling like she is pouring all of herself into everybody else to feed her sense of inadequacy. She is constantly neglecting herself and her own emotions to try to be the mediator for everyone else. This song is her finally feeling fed up with putting herself in that position. She is tired of obligating herself to be everybody’s perfect little movie scene. When she escapes the hooks and her body started shattering, she caused a scene and put herself in a light that could be perceived as embarrassing by other people, but she no longer feels the need to be aware of this. The doll she pretended to be is finally broken. Reminds me of Nosedive from Black Mirror.

Yes, that's what I thought too!
I know the way that I interpreted this song is specific to me, but this song made me realize that I was in a horribly emotionally abusive relationship that was thereafter terminated and soon to be forgotten. Annie, you have saved me from myself. Thank you.
I could look at that face forever.
Saw this on gossip girl and had me hooked
that little smile at the very end kills me every time. i'm addicted.
I agree - she has very much a David Bowie feel to her. A deep breath of fresh air
Reminds me a lot of 90's Tori Amos. Powerful stuff.

Her hell produced this... make no mistakes... were made... She's a queen. Brilliant! Some of her songs can be plastic, but when she shreds the guitar, my heart melts. Also, her production can be absolutely entrancing. I highly recomend all of "Strange Mercy"!
This woman is perfection. That is all.
Annie is brilliant. This is one of my favorite songs of hers and this video does it justice.

I love all her albums so much. All of them are so original and beautiful. She's my favourite alternative artist at the moment.
Annie Clark the ultimate titan
One of my favorite modern guitarists.
She is very talented! Wow!!
Firstly, this song is truly beautiful. The vocals and composition is truly mesmerizing. And then you see the video and realize she is stunning. Then you realize the director has been a big part of the awesome “Atlanta” series.
Seriously, Hiro Murai is an amazing director 👏🏽 underrated
This song and its lyrics are so beautiful. I respect it so much and I think anyone who knows the cheerleader song by OMI needs to listen to this instead.
Seriously one of my favorite songs ever!!! Thank you Annie Clark.
Stunning! How her music is more gorgeous than she is, is just staggering!!
Love it! Saw this song played live back in December. One of the (many) highlights of the night!
I love when a great song has new meaning to me after life events. Its interesting to see where inspiration for lyrics and concepts may have come from.
Around 2016, I was on a bus traveling to training for my career. I was a country person but I knew Annie because of a model named Cara. I listened to ALL of St. Vincent's albums at that time along the way to the destination. Those songs made the journe so special. And this song is the one I play on repeat the most.
I love bands like ac/dc where they spend 5 minutes writing a 60 minute album. This is the best. You can tell they really like music, their listeners, and arent just after money for their next meth fix.
I thought most people interpreted this song the same way I did, but reading the comments, I couldn't find anyone who shared my 'take' on this song. So...without further adieu, here it is! In the first few lines she mentions, "I've had good times with some bad guys, I've told whole lies with a half smile, held your bare bones with my clothes on, I've thrown rocks then hid both my arms." Here, she's illustrating the selfish, destructive, individualistic, backhanded, (and kinda fun/callous?) attitude of contemporary society. Conversely, when she repeats the line: "I don't want to be a cheerleader anymore," she shows how she no longer wants to condone or passively support that kind of behavior a.k.a., she doesn't want to stand idly by and be a 'cheerleader' for all of the backwards negativity going on in the world. Instead, she wants to change/do something about it. That's my take anyway...

Yes yes yes. On top of this, i almost think, by showcasing herself as a piece of art that breaks as she tries to free herself from the show, that she is not actually this shallow caricature, its what others make of her. I see this as so so feminist, she's saying "i'm not what you're creating in your mind of me, i am not your piece of art to look at". Even as she's feeling and saying this, shes not actually sure what she can be if she is not this caricature, so a departure from it breaks her apart. Its a song of recognition of the phoenix as it bursts into flames. It will come back anew, it just doesnt know it yet.

thank you megan abbott for introducing this song to me. i cannot get it out of my head!!!
I haven’t listened to this song in forever
I'm not saying that my interpretation is absolute :) I think Annie writes her music in an open-ended way, so that others can adhere their own personal meaning to it. I think it has a lot to do with the pressures of being perfect, but the Cheerleader metaphor should not limit or contextualize the story. We all know what its like to be judged, to struggle with anxiety, to work hard only to fail, and to codependent. Those are some of the main ideas that (i believe) are being conveyed here.
Yo estoy aquí por Gossip Girl :b

I love the electronic music backing --- can anyone suggest some more in that kind of style? (bassy and drone-y)
St vincent! I saw you last night with David Byrne, every inch of your performance was breathtaking from the doll like movements that are your signature style to your attention to each word you sng!
Well done! Destroying your effigy (liberation) and self-destruction are compelling co-implicated. The hint of satisfaction in the last shot is the icing on the cake!
