Oh, that film got me bawling. My, my, my, it was so sad! She realised too late how grateful she should have been for Charles. It's a pity she could not help him to get into the theatre and I wonder how he could carry on in the streets as a busker, but at least she helped him to feel alive again and wanting to go back to his little group. What a trio! Leigh is enchanting, cruel, childlike all at once, and Laughton the good actor he is, move us to tears, and Harrison, yes, he is good old Rex Harrison, no disappointment there. They made much better films in the old days. Of course, sometimes they still make good ones, today. But they made a dozen good film and one weak one and now they make hundreds of bad ones and a few good ones. Thank you for the upload I loved it.
Her next picture would be Gone With the Wind. What a perfectly splendid film.
Any film starring Charles Laughton, Vivien Leigh and Rex Harrison is worth watching.
No naked bodies, no bashem crashem, just excellent acting and real life emotions!

Why were you looking for naked bodies in an old film. Are you a voyeur?
Vivien Leigh is the greatest actress. Her favorite film was WATERLOO BRIDGE. Her greatest performance was A STREETCAR NAMES DESIRE

Charles Laughton is superb! I have never heard of him before. What a great discovery. I am thrilled to have discovered this channel. Ar long last great scripts, themes, acting, filming and music usually composed specifically for the film, all pulled together.

Thanks, you must have fixed the sound because it worked perfectly. Two brilliant stars, excellent supporting cast especially Tyrone Guthrie. Visually this is a beautiful film with some hauntingly lovely and unexpected scenes.
Finally the complete version! Another one colorized starts 1/2 hour or more into the movie ❤
What a lovely movie of the time, just before WW11 London the shot in the beginning showing St Pauls, all the surrounding churches were distroyed by the bombings.... The street performers are what was fantastic of the time.. Laughton & Liegh do a lovely job of the time, and a young Larry Addler.. This LONDONERS LOVIN IT 🤩😍🇬🇧💯 .. no troubles with the sound, still got subtitles on 🎬✌️💪

Been thinking about this?? Kipling's poems....bourn in India? Mum and Dad were Yorkshire folk, they would visit a dam in a beauty spot? It's name is RUDYARD, that's, nothing to Laughton belting it out on the streets!! I was just thinking 🤔🤫 ANYWAYS I was just thinking ✌️💪🆘🇬🇧💞🥺😅
Great film and well acted, especially Charles Laughton.
This film was released in the US under the title Sidewalks of London. The many street performers on London's theatre district's sidewalks were known as "buskers."
Vivian leigh Her masterpiece was Gone with the wind I love her ❤
So far, my favorite performance of Charles Laughton. A heartwarming, realistic film.

Laughton was totally amazing in this. I've always liked him in other productions (Jamaica Inn, Henry VIII, Mutiny on the Bounty, Captain Kidd, Witness for the Prosecution, and many more) but this showed a vulnerable side of him like no other. Awesome actor. 🎉🎉
And within a few months, Vivien and Laurence Olivier were on their way to Hollywood, where she viewed the first scenes of "Gone With the Wind' and was hired as Scarlett O'Hara. Prescient, indeed.

…The movie is from 1938, and I suggest making sure your subtitles are turned on, and my I Pad and I Phone have a better, louder sound quality than from my computer, and if needed, some small ear phones/buds and you will hear the movie just fine. I prefer these older movies with quality acting and a story line over animated action sequences. 😁 🎥 🍿🩵

This is amazing this is amazing!
Hugh Stewart, one of the film's editors, called it 'dreadful' and said he and the other cutter, Robert Hamer, had to work on the first and second half in mutual ignorance. Stewart said that Laughton and Leigh did not get on. 'St Martin's Lane' was the only film directed by Laughton's co-producer at Mayflower, Erich Pommer. He was an exile from Nazi Germany, hence the expressionistic look and Laughton's hints of Emil Jannings in his part as a grandiose but humiliated personality (cf the Hunchback next year). His persona here is a weird mix of Jannings and Graham Moffatt.
Great movie, but It was fairly well known that Charles Laughton and Vivien Leigh did not like eachother, or get along. According to Rex Harrison, the making of this film was a horror show because of the high tensions on the set.
Very good. PS sound quality not so good. Had to have caption on.

I wish they shot more films back then in color. What was the deal anyway? How come so many films were shot in black-and-white? The natural beauty of Vivian Lee does not show as well as her other pictures.

Because b lack-and-white is an art form in itself. Also because good colour processing had not yet been developed, and when it was it was very expensive.

An interesting film if only to demonstrate Hollywood should never presume it can (romantically or otherwise) represent culture foreign to North America; or project its own cinematic manners on other cultures.

God so loved the world that he gave his son that whoever believes in him will not die but have everlasting life. John 3:16 Jesus died for you, believe & repent the consequences are eternal.
