St.Kilda v Richmond Round 3 2022

Спорт

St Kilda star Max King proved he is one of the best young forwards in the competition, kicking four last quarter goals to help his side overrun Richmond. Despite trailing by 25 points midway through the third term the Saints kicked 10 of the last 11 goals of the match. King turned the match off his own boot with three goals in less than 15 minutes to build a match-winning lead.

I'm new to this sport. It looks bloody fantastic. But why do they sometimes kick the ball to a contested area when they have an unmarked player who can receive it safely with a mark? For example at 52:50 there are several players who can take the ball more safely - two on the far right, and one in the centre (above the ref's head).

Well in that situation, you could opt for either. But by taking those short kicks to the unmarked player, you'll get 15-20 metres forward, but you'll probably be halted from then onwards because players usually stop after they mark the ball. Unless they move on quickly and not take the allocated protected standing time after the mark (which is called 'playing on'), the next kick will probably be to a contest regardless - so it's the same outcome. By going long to the 1v1, it's a 50/50 for the mark BUT if it's not marked, as you can see the Richmond players who you were talking about being unmarked short distance targets are already at the feet of the contest, and if it's not marked and goes to ground, they'll more likely then not get the ball (there's 3 Richmond players around the drop zone, vs 1 St Kilda @ 52:52). Hence, even if it's not marked by the Richmond player in the contest, the players around should clean it up- although it wasn't the situation in this case. There's also a few other things at play, for example the Richmond player is Noah Balta, who is a pretty good marker compared to the St Kilda player, making it more favourable. Another thing is just keeping the tempo up. Going by your name, you're from GB so in soccer terms, by going direct it's a lot quicker and doesn't let the defence set up - almost like a fast counter attack in soccer. Then there's also the fact it's a lot simpler, and less risky if there's any error. If you stuff up your kick, or it's intercepted it's going to be a lot less dangerous than if you did it closer to your goal. LMK if you have any other questions!

@@nidhishp3800 WOW that is SO interesting!! Thank you so much for the detailed answer, I get the game so much better now. There's a lot more subtlety to it than I realised. Yes I am from GB and love soccer, and i think it's the same with soccer that newcomers don't realise the decisions at play. Thanks again!
