There was a Catholic cemetery in the Sixth Ward in Helena, Montana, that I walked past every day on my way to and from Bryant Elementary School when I was a boy. It was in much, much worse condition than this cemetery, with many sunken graves, fallen tombstones, and scattered iron railings that had once enclosed graves. The cemetery was called The Sacred Hearts Cemetery, in the first Catholic diocese in Helena. The last burials were in about 1910 and the church essentially abandoned this cemetery when a new and now much larger cemetery was opened on Montana Avenue. The Sacred Heart Cemetery was left in deplorable condition until the land was acquired by the City of Helena, which then bulldozed the whole area, hauled away the tombstones, and tuned the place into a nice city park. I have three relatives, including a great grandfather, whose graves remain there to this day, under the park's lawns. Thanks for this nice video of St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Your story is one of the reasons that I do this channel. A lot of these cemeteries could meet the same fate some day...it's important to capture these sacred places just in case.
