Thanks for the idea! The original stuff has tetrafluoropropene in it which is what causes the strong spray. At 80 PSI, the spray is weak by comparison. BUT...it's still effective after training with one can of the real stuff. The SSSCats had become a visual deterrent even when empty. After a while, however, the cats realized they no longer posed a threat. The blast of air is enough to get them back in check.

NICE. I frickin KNEW there had to be some alternative to paying a simply ridiculous price for cans of air to refill the Ssscat system. I was thinking that someone had found a way to put the Ssscat motion sensor on top of one of those computer duster cans of air but this is probably even better. I don't have a bicycle pump but I'm picking one up and then those valves and doing this myself. THANKS SO MUCH MAN. You got a big thumbs up from me!

As brilliant a fix as the product itself. Well done!!!! I had just sent a link to the product to a friend having a problem with cats pooping in their yard at night. Buying two of the SSSCATS are needed, refills would be expensive. Then I saw your video. Pulled up the email, added your link to it. Now they can use the SSCATS so much more economically.

These Office Depot Cleaning Duster spray cans work perfectly with the Ssscat mechanism, and costs about $4-5 a can, for larger cans than the originals. (Also the strength of the spray is good -- maybe not as strong as original Ssscat spray, but pretty darn good.) This has been a great solution for us because although I was able to do the pump-it-yourself method from the video, it's a hassle, the spray you get out of the refill is very weak, and each self-refill lasts a very short time. We are buying the Office Depot cans in bulk!

I bought a ssscat system several years ago when mine were all kittens but I kept forgetting to shut off when not needed & I set it off all the time. Didn't last long. 7 yrs later I tried again and it worked so well that I got another one. First cans only lasted a short time, but the second set I bought lasted several months. If it wasn't for the fact that I kept forgetting to shut them off when I walked in they'd probably still be full! After a while you could just put the empty can there. All they need to see is the can and that alone will deter them. I haven't tried filling the cans yet. I don't have a pump or compressor but I'm definitely saving the empties and trying it before I ever spend money on another can of air! Great idea!!

This is an interesting trick, but it relies an inaccurate scientific explanation. The ssscat can does not contain air. Shake it when it is full and you will feel and hear that it contains a pressurized liquid, not a gas. When the container's valve is opened, the liquid is forced out of a small hole and emerges as an aerosol or mist. As propellant expands to drive out the mist, only some propellant evaporates inside the can to maintain a constant pressure. Outside the can, the droplets of propellant evaporate rapidly, leaving the payload suspended as very fine particles or droplets. This looks like a puff of air to a person or a cat, but it is not air. Pushing air back in the can with a bike pump can only achieve a tiny fraction of the function of the original can. If aerosol cans were simply filled with compressed gas, it would either need to be at a dangerously high pressure and require special pressure vessel design (like in gas cylinders), or the amount of payload in the can would be small, and rapidly deplete. However, you are correct that this product is ingenious. It works wonders on cats.

I rotate the Ssscat cans with other empty aerosole cans, (that don’t have the sensor and don’t do anything), and they learn to avoid aerosol cans, BUT, you have to have armed one in there every so often, because a smart cat will question it every so often. You can even cover the armed can with contact paper and cover some blanks with the same paper and make it even more effective.

Hey, this is brilliant! I had thought about a refillable air can for this, and wished someone made one... but it never occurred to me to refill the little gold mine from the company, instead of just sending them gold. I had tried several brands of compressed air cans, some small, some large... but they didn't work well. It probably has something to do with the valve in the Ssscat can, that releases the air in a predetermined volume. I'm also surprised that another company hasn't come out with a similar cat deterrent, that doesn't cost as much... AND uses an air can that is larger, and easily refillable!?! Seeing how important a device this is (it doesn't just keep cats away from plants or certain rooms... it can keep them from going someplace where they could be badly hurt or killed)... you would think the star of "My Cat From Hell", Jackson Galaxy, would invest money into a similar product that was either more affordable (and better for the environment), or had more features. I wish there was a model with a clock in it, so you could have the device ONLY operate during certain times of the day, so you could set and forget. I don't have a bicycle/foot pump... but I DO own an air compressor. I just hope I can "carefully" refill these cans, and not blow them up. I don't want to be known in the news, as the guy who was killed, refilling an pet deterrent air can! "In news today, a local man was killed by an 'air grenade' he detonated!"

Notice how he doesn't show you the before (original spray) and the after (when he fills it up)... That's because this is not a real-world solution. I bought the valve, filled the can to 80 psi, and the spray pressure coming out was super-weak, at best, and lasted about 5 sprays. LOL! What a joke! This is the solution for you if you want to spend several times a day filling your can for a very weak spray pressure that you cat will just laugh at. But hey, thanks for the video, Zack. It is a good idea in theory.

Great idea! I've long thought the can is too small. The Ssscat device is top-heavy, and tips over easily, especially if the can is nearly empty. They need a can with a larger diameter, similar in size to a 12-oz R134a can. Anyway, thanks for the idea!

while this is good to know, you can also simply purchase a case of spray duster at your local big box retailer - the size of the top of the can is generally the same. Just replace the plastic duster spray finger button with the SSSCAT product and it works great!

You look like you could be Simon Pegs brother ! This is awesome and I have stalled buying this because of cost (and honestly it looks like the cats keep getting up on things anyway) so even if filling it this was has less air who cares! That's a huge savings.

This video motivated me to try and come up with another solution. Basically refilling the cans using large cans of compressed air which are obviously way cheaper than a refill. I bought 1.2L of compressed air for 18 dollars which will give me almost 10 refills. Ive uploaded a video to my channel, let me know what you think!

I picked up a similar valve stem and used my 3 gallon pancake air compressor at 70 psi. I filled it after the can was completely empty but for some reason this refilling method only puts a tiny bit of pressure in the can, not nearly enough to scare off a cat like the Ssscat is supposed to

Interesting, I wonder if maybe the distance from the base of the valve stem to the actual core of the valve is too short causing the stem of the can to prevent the valve from opening and letting in the air. Maybe try removing the valve stem core or not pushing the whole thing down quite as far onto the can.

That is awesome. My only problem is already tossed my last two cannisters. Will have to shell out the bucks to get a couple, but then will refill for free with this great hack. Has anyone found out about how many sprays you get with the free refill? Even half as many would still be great. Have used these for at least 10 years and when I first got the refills they were only about 6 to 7 bucks. So in 10 years they have about doubled in price.

Hi Zack! I bought the valve and tried to use it with my pump however I was not successful. I then figured that the valve I bought has a pin on the end that goes in the pump and if that pin is not pressed in, no air goes through. Does your pump have some sort of mechanism that pushes the pin in? I’m just trying to figure out what I need to do differently. Thanks!

That's because there's no propellant to compress the air I to a liquid. Although I was able to put 110 in mine and it lasts for about 10 to 15 sprays which is more than enough for a day or two. I bought a portable air compressor and a power adapter for it and I can get it it filled in a out 3 seconds so it's worth it for me.

Thanks for that. One of my real bugbears - rip-offs! Food packets half filled. Sweet packets with as much gas in as sweets. Even an expensive well-known spray perfume bottle, where the outside is totally obscured, and the tube only reached two thirds the way down.
