வரலாறு:
விஷ்ணுவின் விக்கிரகத்திற்கு பூஜை செய்தார் ராமர். அன்பின் அடையாளமாக அவர் விபீஷணனுக்கு (இந்து இதிகாச ராமாயணத்தின் ராவணனின் சகோதரன்) அவ்விக்கிரகத்தை பரிசாக வழங்க அதை அவர் இலங்கைக்கு கொண்டுச்சென்றார். பூமியில் விக்கிரகத்தை வைக்கக்கூடாது என்ற நிபந்தனையின் பேரில் அதை ராமர் வழங்கியிருந்ததை மறந்த விபீஷணன் அதை காவிரி ஆற்றங்கரையில் வைத்து விட்டு அங்கு நடந்த விழாவை கண்டுகளித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். உற்சவம் முடிந்த பின் அவ்விக்ரகத்தை அவர் எடுக்க முற்பட்டார். இறைவன் அந்த இடத்தை (திருவரங்கம்) நேசிப்பதைப் போல் அங்கிருந்து செல்ல மறுத்தார். விபிஷணன் அவரை அவருடன் வரும்படி கேட்டுக் கொண்டபின், விபிஷணன் எப்போதெல்லாம் விரும்புகிறாரோ அப்போதெல்லாம் சந்திப்பதாக வாக்குறுதியளித்தார். ஆனால் தெற்கே (இலங்கைக்கான திசையமைப்பு, விபிஷணனின் வீட்டின் வழியே) முகம் கொடுத்து அமர்ந்தார்.
