I had the wonderful privilege to chant with this track for a friend who was leaving his body this past Monday. He and my husband were initiated by Srila Prabhupada and both worked together for many years to found and maintain a community in the late 70's that still exists. It was an unspeakable blessing to chant the Mahamantra with the devotees all day and into the evening when our friend was welcomed beyond this material existence by Lord Krishna. On the way home, I mused to my husband that I wondered who was chanting this japa and remarked how I loved the atmospheric background and sweetly singing birds. Well, he just laughed and laughed and told me it was Prabhupada of course. Thank you so much for sharing this so I can cherish it and chant with it again and again.

Please accept my sincere obeisance. Thank you for sharing this...I've recently given my mother tulsi neckbeads that a friend gave to me a long time ago...teaching her to say the Mahamantra, and getting her to the habit of listening to the same when she can. Her body is in its 3rd round of a battle with cancer and it's time for her to go to another place soon. If she feels fearlessness and love at the last moment I will be happy.

By reading daily the knowledge will be revealed to you and by this process your spiritual life will develop.” (Srila Prabhupada Letter, 22/11/1974) Srila Prabhupada states here that one can inquire and get all answers by simply consulting his books. The physical presence of the guru is not necessary. Note that Srila Prabhupada was issuing these instructions about the process of inquiring from the guru via the reading of his books even when he was physically present; how much more relevant then are they today when he is no longer physically present? Srila Prabhupada speaks about the need for the guru and disciple to mutually examine each other before initiation (pariksa), the guru personally training and guiding the disciple. However, in ISKCON the system was that this was delegated to representatives. Devotee: "Srila Prabhupada when you are not present with us, how is it possible to receive instructions, for example, on questions that may arise?" Srila Prabhupada: "Well, the questions ... Answers are there in my books." (Morning Walk, 13/5/1973) "If there is no chance to serve the spiritual master directly, a devotee should serve him by remembering his instructions. There is no difference between the spiritual master's instructions and the spiritual master himself. In his absence, therefore, his words of direction should be the pride of the disciple." (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Adi-lila,1.35) The above allows us to do direct service. "Yes, I am glad that your center is doing so well and all the devotees are now appreciating the presence of their Spiritual Master by following His instructions although He is no longer present - this is the right spirit." (Srila Prabhupada Letter, 13/9/1970) Translation (CC Adi 12.9) Some of the disciples strictly accepted the orders of the ācārya, and others deviated, independently concocting their own opinions under the spell of daivī-māyā. Purport This verse describes the beginning of a schism. When disciples do not stick to the principle of accepting the order of their spiritual master, immediately there are two opinions. Any opinion different from the opinion of the spiritual master is useless. One cannot infiltrate materially concocted ideas into spiritual advancement. That is deviation. There is no scope for adjusting spiritual advancement to material ideas. This says it perfectly, doesn't it? And then: Translation (12.10) The order of the spiritual master is the active principle in spiritual life. Anyone who disobeys the order of the spiritual master immediately becomes useless. Purport Here is the opinion of Śrīla Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī. Persons who strictly follow the orders of the spiritual master are useful in executing the will of the Supreme, whereas persons who deviate from the strict order of the spiritual master are useless. Of course Srila Prabhupada was speaking about the fiasco created after the departure of his spiritual master in the Gaudiya Math in these verses. He also warned very strongly, as you well know, that we should be very careful NOT to follow their example; unfortunately, just the opposite happened! TKG and Hamsadutta admitted in Topanga Canyon, that they had visited Sridhara Maharaja (Prabhupada's godbrother) to get advice on how to proceed; and, of course you are aware of Srila Prabhupada's pointing out that Sridhara Maharaja was supporting one of the deviant "acaryas" that surfaced after Srila Bhaktisiddhanta's departure. They weren't satisfied (their material desires were not satisfied) with Srila Prabhupada's proposition for initiations in the future so instead they went to Sridhara Maharaja to find out how to circumvent those instructions. The rest, unfortunately, is a very convoluted and destructive history...
