Yes, that's right, another legend in the world of carnatic percussion. Guru's U Shivaraman's percussion is such that people would want to listen to just the mridangam.

Somewhere around 2:20 Guru Sivaraman begins a pattern that involves the proper placement of just the forefinger on the right hand end of the drum. Watch it & notice the two different tones that come from this. I've played jazz music for years & have never seen anything like this. Truly, Umayalpuram K Sivaraman has got to be the Joe Morello of Carnatic music percussion. What a marvelous talent!

Nils Young There are actually two places he hits. One is called num and the other is din. They are close to each other so proper finger placement is required. It is very common for artistes to play this beats na-din-din-na which will enhance the ability to play such beats.

I think he is talking about the gumki though. The tone is made higher around 2:20 which involves greater pressure of the palm

It is not a surprise if mridangam lovers are craving to see and watch this maestro's Thani avar thanam. But the point this maestro has drawn audiences from all sections of the society even non-lovers of instrumental music across the world to his high level performance of to the traditional kutchi mridangam. He is bhishmapitha and doyen of mridangam sakshaath nandi bhagawan. Look at that short and classy Thani, the high points of which are instantaneous and unrehearsed. He is encompassing multiple complex patterns of beats into the set thaalam. wishing him more and more of health and longevity to enable perform more and more 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Music box ! There was absolutely no calculation in any sense in this video. Its pure nadam based thani - the inimitable UKS Style. At some parts u can hear d sound and the finger movements only. There is absolutely no complicated calculations in this thani at all. Truly majestic and magical.
