While many people will think Sri Lankan food is like Indian food, there are more cultural influences than just India like Malaysian, North Africa and Dutch. Today we are showcasing another Sydney Street Food tour in the suburb of Glebe.
A meal in Sri Lanka is normally rice and curry, however the main differences is that Sri Lankan curries are spicier and are of coconut milk based compared to Indian curries.
Today we tried egg hoppers and string hoppers, a famous street food dish in Sri Lanka and its usually eaten with coconut sambol, caramelised onion relish, chilli relish or curries. If you would like to test your spicy tolerance level, then try the devilled chicken. Another one is: Lamprais, which is a Dutch influence in Sri Lankan cuisine - a banana leaf wrapped rice with meat curries and belacan sambal. For desserts, we tried Saruwath, a colourful refreshing drink with mixed fruits and poppy seeds and Watalappam, steamed egg coconut custard with some spices like cardamom, ginger and nutmeg.

Sri Lankan version of sweet and sour dish but quite spicy. We have it with chicken on sizzling hot plate.
* Special Lunch Tasting Platter AUD 26.90 / USD 21
This platter feels like “Taste of Sri Lanka” that consist of egg hopper, string hopper, meat curry, dhal curry, chicken kottu roti, coconut sambol, caramelised sweet onion chutney, and chilli chutney.

Dutch / Ceylon influenced food which consist of rice with meat curry, belacan, sambal wrapped in banana leaf. In Indonesia, it is called “nasi bungkus” which literally means wrapped rice.

Sri Lankan dessert made from coconut custard, jiggery, eggs, and spices like cardamom, cloves, nutmeg. Jiggly yet condensed texture but full of spices.

Try dolphin kottu (not real dolphins, it’s just the name), isso wade, umbalakada wade, milk rice, roast paan with dhal curry and pol sambol and chicken curry, Negambo pork curry. Some of them are not street foods but you should give it a try.

Also, you were supposed to eat String hoppers with a curry like "Kiri hodi". Typically deviled chicken you have to eat with SL fride rice (unless you take it as a "bite" dish while drinking alcohol), .it's actually a side not by itself. Really glad to see you enjoying SL food and thank you :)

You have missed jackfruit(kos) and raw jackfruit curry (polos ambula). They are delicious with rice. Jackfruit is similar to finish your hunger as rice. That Deviled chicken! We would love to try it, but maybe a bit less spicy! LOL The Egg Hopper.. Butters would love it. It was fun to watch the chef making it. So cool they have different toppings. The bowl reminded us of a Dosa! The chutneys look great.

That Roti looked so amazing, and love the flavor profile you mentioned. Seems like a lot of their food is full of flavors! The lamb dish.. looked great too, and glad that Nick really enjoyed it and that the lamb was tender. It's nice when you can get the gaminess out of wild meats. Really enjoy the concept of eating and mixing with your hands like that. You can actually feel your food and it almost gives you a better sense of how it will all taste in an odd way. Haha love Nick double checking the menu for the lamprais, better safe than sorry!

Hopper is one of the most difficult food to get right for the first time. In my case for the 100th time 🤣. You have to get the batter right and let it sit overnight and all but once you got the batter right then it's so easy. Ah also the pan. Better try a non stick pan, otherwisw, sometimes if there's sth slightly wrong with the batter you can't get the hopper out. It sticks to the pan and burns

@@nickandhelmi You're warmly welcome here. One plain hopper is normally 10 rupees (0.052 usd) one egg hopper is 30 rupees (0.16 usd) so they are cheaper here in Sri Lanka. You'll be able to eat as many spicy side dishes as you like when you're in SL.

Cool video and restaurant. As a Sri Lankan my mouths watering now!!! Also traditionally you need to use your hands and mix the stringhoppers well with coconut sambal, meat curry, a potato and egg curry or dahl curry and eat.
All d Sri Lankan food looked amazing especially d dessert.

String hoppers should be mixed with the Dhal (Lentil) Curry and pol sambal. Its nice to see you all like our foods and koththu rotti is a famous sri lankan street food which make anyone all over world fond of. Cheers guys. Wish you will visit this wonderful nation for more adventures
Foods like hoppers are made very well by people in the rural villages as they have access to the fresh natural ingredients, those people are very experienced in making those traditional food. So I suggest you to visit those places next time you visit sri lanka. Thank you
