Sri Lanka's Lost Martial Art | Learning Angampora 🇱🇰

We were extremely lucky to be invited into the jungle to witness and learn Angampora, Sri Lanka's lost martial art. We start by seeing a demonstration of both the weapon as well as hand to hand fighting, then learn the techniques ourselves, followed by a history lesson from the founder of Angampora STIMA.
A key component of Angampora is the namesake angam, which incorporates hand-to-hand fighting, and illangam, involving the use of indigenous weapons such as the ethunu kaduwa, staves, knives and swords. Another component known as maya angam, which uses spells and incantations for combat, is also said to have existed.
With the advent of colonialism over the entirety of the island in 1815, Angampora fell into disuse and was very nearly lost as a part of the country's heritage. The British administration prohibited its practice due to the dangers posed by a civilian populace versed in a martial art, burning down any angan madu (practice huts devoted to the martial art) found: flouting of the law was punished by a gunshot to the knee, effectively crippling practitioners; Angampora nevertheless survived within a few families, allowing it to emerge into mainstream Sri Lankan culture post-independence.
A number of paintings related to angampora are found at Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. These include Embekka Devalaya, Gadaladeniya Rajamaha Viharaya, Temple of the Tooth, Saman Devalaya (Ratnapura) and Lankathilaka Rajamaha Viharaya.

I see a country whose natives were branded as terrorist and have been dispersed from their homelands. Nearly 1.5 million in canada. Same in Europe same across the rest of the world. Taking over our Eelam island home is bad enough but then to take over all cultural references modifying them with made up history is both ridiculous and disgusting..... But hey now I can hear what you'd say next.... We are not responsible for this that and the other... But how could it be true... Meditation, kundalini awakening, spiritual awakening, healing any desease ( any means any, unless you have really bad karma ). One of the main reasons why British found hard to invade Sri Lanka was we used to fight using Angampora.

The real art of Angampora lost its existence a long time back, the British made damn sure that it would never review again. It is a very tragic story, many people protected the art with their life. It was only passed down among a few family bloodlines and in an ironic secrecy. Slowly many aspects of the art began to fall out (since some successors were incapable and non-deserving to practice the art) and eventually, what you find today named as Angampora is a very small part of the actual art and heavily subjected to reformations.

I knew you would find your way to experience the ancient Angampora martial Art, as you thrive to experience off the beaten path. having said that, like any other martial art, Angampora is ancient and it's very spiritual, in recent times many young Sri Lankans have shown an interest in learning this and hopefully, they will continue to keep this respectful Art of fighting alive for a long time.

These martial art style were used for centuries to defend Sri Lanka from Indian invasions, Dutch invasions, Portuguese invasions & British invasions. British were never able to conquer Sri Lanka through war. They were only able to conquer SL via a political cue. Eg: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Mulleriyawa

Angampora has a long history. It was practiced both by people and monks too. It is more of a spiritual martial art. It was practiced in caves long time back because there were many invaders to ancient ceylon. It was prohibited by the British because it became a great threat for their exsistance. Anyways thanks Johnny for bringing us this. ❤️💪

Machan as far as i know angampora came from Kalari background! But our ancient people were so talented enough to make a different martial art system for Sri Lanka own. Its the angampora! Many guys argue we are doing Kalari. Some of the swords use in angampora such as strait blade sword, foldable strap blade sword is in kalari too. But its not, Adopted some techniques from kalari and ancestors were damn talented to make unique system.

I watch your videos often and appreciate it very much. I would like to note this as a fact and not as a critique. Ancient martial arts is not a show that people show you. It is a form of warfare used only to defend Buddhism and my country. Also, this ancient martial art was never passed on to other nations. (Just a fact). I like to tell a little story. During the last dynasty there was a warrior called Levuke. He was like a devil to the invaders who came to my country (during the Portuguese or Dutch invasion) but the people who were personally jealous of him plotted to kill him. According to legend, he did not retaliate when attacked. He did not strike with a single finger. This is because he and all the warriors swear not to use martial arts for the sake of the country or for anything other than to preserve Buddhism. I would like to point out that such sacred art is not sold in the weekly market. The real Angam Guru is still secretly living with the methods of fighting. The Portuguese and the English were so frightened that they forbade anyone to keep a sword in a Sinhala house. I really like and appreciate your channel. Thank you
