SRAM GX Eagle AXS Review | Buy This, NOT XX1!

Спорт

SRAM's new GX Eagle AXS wireless groupset takes the tech seen in their more expensive X01 and XX1 AXS wireless systems and reimagines it in a far more affordable package.
Rather than deliver it as a whole new groupset, GX Eagle AXS is sold as an upgrade kit that is designed to be used alongside existing components.
BikeRadar's Technical Editor Alex Evans, will take you though the systems features, how it was to set up, and deliver his verdict in this ultra in-depth review.
Alex also compares it with SRAM's more expensive counterparts, alongside some of the other top performing mechanical drivetrains out there.
What are your thoughts on this exciting new tech from SRAM? Are you more mechanically minded, or does this trickle-down technology finally make a wireless groupset worth investing in? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

    Having upgraded my 2020 Marin Bobcat Trail 3 from Shimano Altus 3x8 to SRAM NX 1x12, this release has me all excited once again. The NX has been fantastic but losing yet another piece of cable clutter and having those smooth fast shifts is something I am very much looking forward to. Nice to know my bike will have plenty of life left yet!

    Thanks for the great review! The only issue I have is the discussion comparing the weight of the AXS system with mechanical shifting as I’m not sur you considered the weight saving from the cables, which may have tipped the balance a bit more in favour of the AXS. None-the-less your review was pretty comprehensive and its great knowing it had a full work out in challenging conditions. I’d be interested to hear if anyone has had issues riding in sloppy / thick mud - you know the type that sticks to cassettes and derailleurs causing shifting issues.

    It's great to have the wireless option available. More precision and less cables is good. But not for everybody. The amount of time you said "if you are in the market for an electronic shifter" says it all. It's expensive yes, but that's not the only barrier. For me the main problem is: it is yet another thing to remember. Charge your shifter battery. Battery technology is a major limiting factor of what wireless equipment can do. I cannot remember my water bottle, let alone charging the shifter battery, and the latter has much more serious consequences. With such a short battery life it's bound to happen. For a person like me, always distracted by its everyday life, biking being only a passion and a free time activity, having the reliability of pure mechanical shifting removes stress and make life simpler.

    I'm curious how repairable the derailleur is if it gets twisted or if it's only replaceable. Particularly since last night a mate shredded their GX (non-AXS) derailleur (and chain) after the chain bouncing, jamming and twisting. Replacing one of them at £50 isn't a joy. Having to spend £350-ish would mean 2009 hardtail for a number of months for me. 😬 I guess at least it's a steel cage. But nothing on a mountain bike is ever invincible.

    Two questions: 1. How confident can one be that the battery wouldn't jump from its place when going through rougher terrain? Or when you hit a rock, or have an accident? How securely is it locking in place? I'd be desperate to loose the battery in the middle of nowhere, with the derailleur on the wrong gear... 2. I guess it works with other XD cassettes, such as Garbaruk, right?

  • @alexevans1424

    @alexevans1424

    The battery is locked in place securely. The force required to break it away from the derailleur would most likely result in other significant damage to the derailleur, chain or even frame. I don't think it is a concern. SRAM recommends only using Eagle drivetrain components with one another, but if the cassette is 12-speed, I can see no real reasons why it wouldn't work. I hope that helps!

    No, unfortunately not. This derailleur is only compatible with a 1x chain-ring/crankset. I have a mullet setup on a gravel bike, Sram Red AXS x1 chain-ring/crankset/brake shifters, with a 46T chain-ring up front and a Eagle XX1 AXS rear derailleur with a 10-52 cassette. It has unbelievable range for climbing as well as top speed. And it's a very light drive train. No issues in over 14 months, just service and cleaning regularly. I love it, best range, lightest group set, best performance. Give it a go (choose a chainring to suit your needs, climbing or speed)👌🔥

    If there the derailleur runs out of battery it stays in its current gear. If the shifter runs out of battery it is possible to shift the derailleur using its AXS button up or down the cassette. A single push shifts to a higher gear while a double push shifts to a lower one. I hope that helps.

Based on today's conversion rates (the same day as this video posted, and launch day for this device), the American price is $600 USD. This is the equivalent of $760 in the UK (£554 GBP) and equivalent to $730 in Europe (€620 Eur). I am guessing it is probably $750 - $800 CAD in Canada (but I couldn't find the price).

    I'm not one to ride for more than 20 hours, but wouldn't a spare battery solve this issue? Yes, I know it adds to the cost, but seems that one could throw it in the pack and pop it on when needed. I'm assuming that is the way it would work. I have no personal knowledge, as I've never had the opportunity to try AXS.

    I seriously don't understand Shimano. They've had an electronic Di2 for 11 speed mountain bikes for a long time, and they just let it slide for the 12 speed? They could've been way ahead of the curve on this one and decided to not 'innovate' a whole 1 more speed into their Di2 lineup. That's just lazy, and now SRAM is killing it with their AXS setups.

  • @lucasbalyeat8746
    @lucasbalyeat87463 жыл бұрын

    4 reasons why you shouldn't. 1 this will not make you faster. It only complicates things, sure quick and easy install. You have to remove the battery while in transit it wakes up when it senses motion. Otherwise if you go on a long trip it will run dead in the car. 2 crap spring tension, on my 2020 Scott genius 900 tuned axs. When I was taking bigger jumps and hitting rock gardens the Sram spring tension sucks so the chain was slapping my upper triangle and chipping of the paint! Never had that problem with my old genius or spark with xt shimano. 3 miss shifts, if you happen to bump that thing at the wrong time it will shift sometimes multiple gears, then when you put the power down it grinds into whatever gear it chose sometimes that can be problematic. 4 random inefficiencies, I couldn't tell if it was a miss shift or because the spring tension is crap, randomly it would skip, and I mean randomly not even at aggressive times. I ended up moving the shifter in so far that I had to reach for the shifter every time just to be sure it wasn't me bumping it on accident. And it wasn't. After three months of this crap and a scratched up bike. I took it in, had the shop install the regular xo1 shifter and derailleur. And sold that stupid thing for $300 the cost of the new shifter and derailleur. Final piece of advice DON'T waste your money on this thing it WILL NOT make you faster. Put your hard earned money in a good I9 or Onyx hub. That will take much further. And by the way after the install of the new derailleur not one skip or miss shift, just the same old crap spring tension.
