SR 35018 Merchant Navy Power over Shap on the Santa Special 1/12/19.
SR 35018 British India Line was at the helm of the 2nd Santa Special from Lancaster to Carlisle and back via the 1 in 75 climb of Shap bank. We see 35018 with 13 and a deadish class 47 on the hook as she climbs in frosty clear conditions towards Shap Summit. The return leg sees 35018 at Barrow Mill in the late afternoon sun and as the Merchant stopped at Plumpton loop we see her shortly after Plumpton and finally in the Lune Gorge . Thanks to Nige for the lift and company today . Also thanks to Idris for on board updates .The thumbnail picture at the start is taken from a static camera but with no sound from 35018 until closer I just used the picture from the video.

Thank you for capturing such an evocative run - the whole thing just looks so at home amongst the Cumbrian hills ! A clean exhaust all the way and safety valves just feathering - beautiful piece of firing, by the unsung hero of the piece. Obviously an expert in his craft !

Tommo: surely some of the best filming conditions you have encountered? Glorious footage with lovely condensing exhaust hanging in the still air. Watchable several times over. What I find incredible is the way the steam just "hangs" in the air without immediately evaporating. The only time I have ever seen this happen is during a fog.

TheStephengthompson pleasure, you obviously enjoyed making the film. Careful camera placement and good editing. You should be chuffed to bits.
After nationalisation and the exchange trials, the LMR wanted to take the whole class of Merchant Navys off the Southern for these routes (you can see why), but they got knocked back. Oddly enough, when LMR retired the Lizzies, there was an idea that they could be used on the Southern on Waterloo-Bournemouth services, but guaging restrictions did not permit.
