SR 35018 British India Line Fails on her I'll Fated loaded test run 23/2/18.

35018 British India Line took to the rails on a mainline loaded test run from Carnforth to Carnforth via Hellifield and Wilpshire bank . 35018 is first seen at Clapham with six coaches but sadly also leaking steam from the near side . We move onto Hellifield to find she had problems and would be returning back to Carnforth tender first due to injector problems and an inner cylinder leak . We see her leave the station in order to reverse back and then run around her coaches and return to Carnforth and not complete the full circular test run as planned .Apologies for the title spelling on Mainline with the n missing LOL .Called this I’ll-fated as 35018 did NOT complete its test run hence I'll - fated .

    Thank you for the video as well as including a textual description of the train and the condition leading to its failure. No doubt a lot of viewers simple look at the title and based on it, expect something catastrophic. It's nice to know such a classic train was not destroyed in its testing. With so much steam, I doubt that a conductor could see ANYTHING in front of him.

    I grew up in NE Portland, OR, and vividly recall the steam era of the late 40's and early 50's. The mainline ran through a canyon next to where I lived and one could stand on a traffic bridge, watching the steam trains pass on one of the three tracks below. I used to keep a list of the engine numbers to see if I would see a repeat, but never did.

    The leaks look like it might just be a blown piston rod packings. This is actually pretty easy to fix if you have a supply of packing rope and some knowledge of how these engines are put together and achieve sealing around the moving piston and valve rods.

    @TheStephen, The fella who told me this was an old time railroad man who, worked at the Martinez, Ca. station. He was kind of retired but still worked checking train traffic passage; Martinez was a busy line with some kind of train about every 10-20 minutes. Martinez is kind of north and east of the San Francisco/Oakland area and near the Carquinez Straights.

    TheStephengthompson My paternal grandmother was a Thompson whose family was Scotch Irish. Her grandfather, William Balaam Thompson, was born in America in 1792 but we know nothing of the family back then. I once saw on a genealogy site a William Thompson having also been born in 1792 but have never been able to find that again. Her grandfather graded the ROW and laid the iron covered wooden rails on a section of the Georgia Railroad for John Edgar Thomson. Our only other relative was Grandmother’s cousin William Hartsfield, who as Atlanta’s mayor for 24 years ran streetcars out of town to make the streets safer for cars.

    Look at Galatea took a number of years bedding in to really see its best form. This is the locos first trip out after a major rebuild it’s going to have teething issues. I doubt we will see the best of BIL until next year at the earliest

  • @struck2soon

    @struck2soon

    6 жыл бұрын

    petedoggett this engine doesn't appear to have had the obvious problems from it's initial test run remedied at all...things like steam leaks and valve timing can be ascertained without even leaving the confines of the mpd yard tracks. Why they even bothered sending it on a test run with so many faults which must have been obvious well in advance is beyond me. It certainly has done little to enhance WCRC's already tarnished image!

  • @petedoggett

    @petedoggett

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hence why it’s on a test run, WCRC aren’t going to send it out with the idea of it failing. Their fleet in recent years has a higher reliability rate than most. I really don’t understand the hullabaloo it’s caused it’s not failed hauling anything other than a test train. They got Galatea right and they will get BIL right.

  • @rogerfroud300

    TheStephengthompson - I didn't suggest that. I'm merely saying that they need to be more certain that their locomotives are prepared to a high enough standard so that they won't fail on services that interfere with commercial services. It doesn't give much confidence when they have major issues, when they presumably thought the locomotive was ready for a significant test. Much as we all love to see Steam on the main line, its continued presence is not assured by any means. Unless these locomotives are reliable, they will not be welcomed there.
