So apparently Dalmatians became the firedog mascot because back when they used horse drawn carriages, the breed was very good with horses and would help guide to the fire as well as calm the horses. Not only that, more modern, Dalmatians are prone to deafness so being in a fire station around loud sirens doesn’t affect them!
