Squirrels A Mission Impossible !

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Many years ago my father tried and failed to feed birds but not squirrels. His attempts were pretty clever (he was a designer) but he always fell short and the tree-rats feed on his nuts.
When he passed away I had a go, like a tribute....what you see here, apart from dizzy, sick squirrels starts at phase ten (yes 10) and after 3 months of trying I resorted to a 7-iron and a personal attack.....and yes the squirrels at my nuts!

The movie _Young Einstein_ shows young Albert growing up on the family farm in Tasmania. One day, Albert noticed his dad was very busy doing something. "What are you doing dad?" "I'm going to flood this valley son." "But dad. That will drown all the little animals." "Yes son. In one go." I really like Einstein's father. Squirrels are vermin. They chew things and cause huge damage. I'm going to have to replace the back window on my house. They carry fleas, ticks, and bot flies. They carry viruses and bacteria transmissible to humans. Vermin. They deserve to be killed.

puppetsock Ah yes, such great logic. We, as a species, also cause a lot of damage (if not more) to other animals, carry bugs, and carry bacteria, viruses, and diseases, which are transmissible, not only to other species, but *gasp* also to other humans! Does that mean we deserve to be killed too? And that just about every other animal does as well? For one thing, other species do not need our “approval” in order to survive. Nonetheless, squirrels play a vital role in forest regeneration and seed dispersal, so they help maintain a healthy ecosystem, and we need a healthy ecosystem in order to survive, as it supports the environment we live in. Love them or hate them, other species have just as much of a “right” to exist as we do, and history shows us what happens when we try to “play God”, as some say, and attempt to wipe out species (I highly recommend looking up the Indian vulture crisis and its consequences, a great example of what happens when a species rapidly vanishes across its range. The poisoning was not intentional in it, but the consequences of this event do show how drastic wiping out an ecologically important native species can be for the environment. Vultures are keystone species, and they are extremely important in maintaining healthy ecosystems). If you wish to discourage squirrels or “control” their populations near you, I recommend putting up nesting boxes for owls, playing audio of predator sounds every now and then, and sealing off all possible entrances into your house.

The squirrels are very aggressive with birds (the innkeeper’s FRIENDS, for whom he goes to trouble and expense to attract to his feeders). I just sprinkle the black oil sunflower seeds on the pavement, and let the squirrels, sparrows, chipmunk(s), doves, robins, crows, bluejays, chickadees, feed to their delight. Been doing it now 10 years, track the populations, and enjoy the company. One squirrel and one chipmunk are almost tame. there was one chipmunk who used to feed a mole a few years back with bread crusts and seeds. Love it. Never had an infestation problem either. Poor baby squirrel. Jeesh.

in the uk the grey squirels are considered non native and a pest (thing is you dont really see the native red squirels anymore) that is the only reason i can think of why not to feed them, 75% of people with bird feeders are subjected to stolen peanuts and fat balls from squirels, my parents had a decent bird table/station that birds flocked to but they took it down because a field mouse and a squirel (1 of each) fed off the scraps in winter (the squirel stole 4 or 5 fat/suet balls a week though) my neighbour has a good feeding station for wild birds and we have squirels, they feed the squirels "monkey nuts" (whole peanuts in shell) and they are too busy eating/hiding/burying them to care of the birdfood... this year i will reset that feeding station at the parents place, with squirel proof bird feeders and a squirel feeding station to keep him happy, not sure of the mouse yet lol

Gray squirrels are natives to Eastern North America. They were introduced to London parks in the 1800s and later spread all over England on their own. So they are not pests in Eastern North America, they are natives there.

Our huge back yard maple tree was once home to many squirrel families. I worked in the city across the river, so I used to trap squirrels and send them many miles across the river to drop them off before work each morning. After a few dozen, I noticed that the population never decreased. The absence of squirrels just created a vacuum, so others came on to take their homes in our tree. I threw in the towel and made peace with them. They continued to have their way with our garden.
