Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Short Scale. Setup tips and jazz pickup modifications.

Ғылым және технология

Review of the first bass I bought. The short scale was attractive as change from Fender 25.5 to 30 inch scale was great introduction to bass. Cheapness of guitar and quality were a factor.
Follow detailed setup on Dave's World of Fun stuff - I used same strings. The P bass Seymour Duncan pickups are awesome. Sound much better in room/concert than my phone camera can capture. Stock jazz pickup is disappointing - so I replaced this with Ironstone bridge pickup. I hint on how I routed out cavity with Dremel like tool.
If I could change anything else it would be to get a spare neck and turn it into fretless. For sure it is a decent bass guitar out of the box. Quite easy to improve it and at right price makes an excellent bass.

    I am looking out for another one so I can pull the frets out and make a fretless version. Check out Dave's World of Fun Stuff - sounds great. The more I get into fretless the more i like it. Tony Franklin and Jim Stinnett are good references here. Enjoy your bass.

    @@stephenhookings1985 If I played fretless, I'd do the same thing. I hope it turns out well. I've seen Dave's World. I'll check it out again, thanks. The bass is here, and after changing to flatwound strings, I'm really enjoying it.

    @@kijekuyo9494 they are pretty cool basses. Especially the PBass pickup. I am thinking of getting updated version of my Zoom pedal but cannot decide on B1fourX, the 3 or the 5. Maybe the 4 cos is so cheap - so long as it has the virtual capo. Enjoy your bass - for me its a keeper.

    @@stephenhookings1985 Still playing the Jaguar SS one year later, It's firmly my main bass, and I love everything about it: the weight, the balance, the neck, the playability, the sound, the comfort of the body (my main complaint about by P-Bass). I play P-bass (neck) pickup only, flatwound strings, and with foam under the strings next to the bridge. I can't see any reason to buy a long-scale again.

    Yes I mention it in the video description and pretty sure I mention it quite a few times in the video itself :-) I really like his style - when I first got the bass it was noisy and 1st fret was not intonated. The very first Dave's World I watched was a 5 parter about a Jaguar guitar with active electronics. Then I found some about high nut causing intonation issues - fixed. Later he produced two on this specific bass. I watch the occasional Dave's Sandwich hour - 12 until 1am for me :-( I been playing with reverse engineering Zoom B1x Four pedal - more to do - but you remind me to give this bass some attention over holiday period. It still punches well above its weight.

    Thanks for the review. But did modding the nut solved the tunning problem?

  • @stephenhookings1985

    @stephenhookings1985

    100%, please see Dave's World of Fun Stuff - he shows how to file the nut. And full setup on this specific bass. Why do I have to file nut? Because I dropped the action. Even at factory spec the 1st fret tuning was awfully bad. So you can either raise strings and hope or learn to setup and have string height where you want it. I prefer lower action but then you need to get comfortable with nut filing, possibly fret levelling, re-crowning and polishing, saddle adjustment and truss rod adjustment (always loosen first, use correct wrench and never over tighten). You notice I only get cheaper guitars and basses - then set them up like expensive ones. Body balance and neck profile becomes the main things to fix - and look but since I am not an image conscious person it don't matter to me). For this bass a heavier bridge helps the neck balance or decent strap. Nowadays I use a spare feeler gauge (I thing 22 thousand th). Rest it on the fret board by the nut. File carefully across nut with a slant highest at fretboard side, lower at machine head side. The scale length (in this case 30") is between side of nut closest to bridge and each bridge saddle. The thinner strings will have their saddle seemingly closer - this is because you should put a radius into the saddle heights and the difference is related to string thickness. I don't have any special nut files. But I found a ceramic tile hand saw fits low B perfectly! A normal hacksaw with a couple of parallel cuts can work for some strings. A small file works for others. Or you can buy a special set but they are expensive. If you have enough basses it is worth it. Or get a tech to so it. Check out the latest video in my Squier Classic Vibe 60s Jazz bass. There I machined a cheap Chinese maple fingerboard fretless neck onto Squier body. Eventually I got it right (top tip - just buy the Fender part!!). It was crap beyond belief UNTIL I let the neck settle and cut the nut. Now it is buttery smooth. So I adjusted nut on the Sire M2. Again - now it is a joy to play. What if I messed it up? So long as only the nut is damaged you can sometimes back fill with nut dust dissolved in superglue. Or you can buy pre cut GraphTech nuts - get the one for your neck measurements. They were about £10 in UK. I used them on some of the cheap Stratocasters that came with plastic nuts. I am going to have a quick jam with the Jaguar now :-). Mostly I have been playing with the fretless recently. And that M2 with its 18v preamp is fun - the curved fretboard ... Not convinced.

    Forgot to ask which country you are from? Rondo import these in US and their customer service puts EU to shame. I was getting my from Scotland in UK, then Bratislava. Brexit and other factors made this trickier. Ireland sells some but not spares. So if you are in USA you might find Rondo have spare neck just incase you rasp away too much wood. But I am not involved so much in the instruments craft as you, so I would send the bass to a luthier for having the job done. They are quite rare nowadays. Recently I have been getting cheapish guitars setting them up, and they seem to be OK. For example J & D do.some short scale bass - I fancy a sky blue one. If u see on my channel I added EMG pickups to a surf green J & D full size jazz bass. Lovely bass.

  • @Great-Documentaries

    The jazz bass pickup is the only weak part of this instrument. You should always setup a bass, including filing down the nut for action and string gauge anyway. But a Harley Benton strap on a Squier? That's like using Squier strap on a Custom Shop Fender. C'mon now, Stephen. You're better than this. Your Squier is better than this!

    My wife insists the house is spotless - my garage is one of the few places where I can have my mad scientist shit going on - so unlikely I will ever completely tidy it. You have noticed I am a leaver (where I left it) rather than a putter (where i put it). Still I bought a magnetic tool rack yesterday so maybe I will take your advice ... But it will regress as I work on projects.

    BTW the stuff behind me is the Mrs's gardening gear. If I had my way it would be in a shed of its own leaving me to my man cave. She wants the whole garage for her gear and a car. There would be more space for my edrum if the Shredder, lawnmower, rakes, shovels etc were not there :-)
