Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special Is A Very Special Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Indeed (V
Музыка
Seriously, what is it with the Indonesian Fender / Squier factory? This here Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special retails for only $200, but it's got desirable features like a two-band active EQ and P / J bass pickups, and a build-quality and playability that are more than gig-worthy. This is the kind of bass you buy as a backup, but end up making your primary instrument.
Owen played the Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special direct into a radial JDI and Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 interface, and also mic'd through an Ampeg B200 combo. He may have reservations about its lack of a passive bypass option, be he's got no reservations about the VM Jaguar Bass's slap-tone.

Squier makes 4 different Vintage Modified Jaguar basses. This one and the one with the humbucker are active. The short scale and the $300 long scale P/J with Duncan Designed pickups are passive. Both of the passive Jags have black headstocks, the actives have natural finished headstocks.
The first song he played was soul to squeeze :)
Bought this Jag squier bass yesterday, recorded with it last night, very nice Bass , really happy with it, .sounds great
This guys adorkable.
i just ordered one today!!! and this video makes me so excited to receive it and i don’t doubt it at all :D
thanks for the review, Im about to buy a new bass and Im doing my research. Your vid helped a lot
After months of research and budget considerations for which starting bass I want, you've convinced me to go with this guitar. Awesome review good sir.
Seriously appreciate everything about this review. Great demonstration of its tones and loads of information. And appreciated a few lolz too :)
wow OWEN you have gotten so much better at the reviewing gig! More confidence and more information. Keep it up!
I have the three tone burst ..this Bass is one of my favorite bass sounds tight,,great tones....and great for any style music
We're playing the pickups with a pick!! Histerical. Love my VM P-bass, going to order a VM Jazz very soon to balance out to universe.
Squier keeps bringing out basses that I want! I have the VM Jazz fretless and it's great.
the fact you were playing soul to squeeze made me purchase this bass thanks man!
Awesome! I love it. I just bought a Vintage Modified Strat a while ago and I'm in love with it. I live in Korea right now and it's tough to find stuff. I need to pick up a bass as well, and I'd love this one.
Tip: change your battery before every show, no matter what, you won't regret it.
i love it when you he tests out the basses with flea riffs. for real, very smart.
I have owned and played a squire jaguar standard scale for several years just like the one shown only in black on black. A jaguar is an excellent choice as you are buying 2 bases you don't have to choose between a precision or jazz bass. For the novice and seasoned alike we can both enjoy the following. 1) You can decide witch sound you like best precision for a tight metal sound; but still have the option to change on the fly if the song requires jazz if you want to muddy it up, or blend them together you want to make your own unique sound. 2) You don't have to break the bank, the money you save you can spend on a decent amp. I recommend at least a Fender 15 rumble bass amp.
Awesome review. Thanks for sharing with us
My wife bought me one for christmas, we went yesterday and picked it up. I got the VM Jaguar Special in black, looks nice and plays smooth. Great bass for the money, plus I really wanted a PJ pickup combo
I was already in love with the sound of this guitar, found a good price, and was thinking how similar it sounded to the Pixies. Then you played them. Fuckin' sold.
Another feature I like about the active electronics os you can plug a pair of headphones into the bass for practice. Skull Kandy hesh 1/8 inch jack with a 1/8 to 1/4 gold plated adapter.
Sir, in your hands every $200 bass sounds like $4000 masterpiece
I love that "then crooked vultures" bass line! Good review, too.
you crazy man ! thx for nice review !
Need a recording bass on a budget. It's probably going to be this one. All in favor say aye?

ProGuitarNoob same reason I'm here. The midi bass sounds are just crap in Ableton Live 10. Do you think going direct in focusrite 2i4 to my DAW is a good idea? I don't have a bass amp.. only in ableton live 10 suite
Great overview! I went with a modified jazz bass, but it's cool that Squier has a lower cost option. Ku-ku-Plu-Plow!
I've owned mine for a few years. What appealed to me was the debate between precision and jazz is solved. Another feature is you can customize your sound. Tight and clean all precision. Want to smooth it out mix in a little jazz pickup, like it muddy wide open on the jazz and your amp is the limit.
great playing - looks like a nice bass
Love that there was some of the Pixies in there :3

I remember that song showing up in a 411 skateboarding video
I've wanted to pick one of those up and take advantage of the existing battery compartment to remove the boost circuit and replace it with an inline fuzz. Might take some work and cutting out an extra cavity under the pickguard, but it'd be a fun project.
Sounds amazing 🖤
Haha great review. Thanks for showing different playing styles
Totally sold on it! Played it the other day and it sounded incredible. I'm getting it from musiciansfriend, their price on it is $174. I'm absolutely in love with the red finish on it but I like the silver finish as well. Props for Them Crooked Vultures!!!! There's only about 12 people who know they exist. it's sad because the rest of the world needs to know.
This video inspired me to get one of these basses. I liked it so much that I traded in a well loved Fender P Bass standard to get it. This bass plays and sounds fantastic! It is the gem of Squier's product line. My Modulus Q5 and Burns Bison bass will be collecting some dust for a while as this axe is gig worthy. Stock strings are good. Setup is medium and good. Tuners stay in tune pretty well. Nut is nice. Frets are not rolled, but not a deal breaker. Battery compartment is easy to us

Rick after 7 years, did you regret selling your p bass?
Best demo! Thanks
great video. very informative, very fun!!
Hey Owen! New glasses? You look much better - less nerdy. And you've become funny! And you're still a great bassplayer. Love your reviews. YOU SHOULD BECOME THE NEW BASS WHISPERER!!!
Sir, I love your style !
That's what I am hoping for--a review on the new VM Bass V.
i tried a few other basses, and i find this one to not only be fabulous, it also plays great :D
Thumbs up for "Soul to Squeeze" improv intro!
This is a great bass and a good price point. I picked one up at Guitar Center today and it is much better than my Ibanez GSR200. The sound is phat and it is what I expect a bass to sound like. I couldn't resist the price and looks. I got the 3-Tone Sunburst and I couldn't be happier. Not to heavy either.
Gigantic is the first thing I started playing when I got my base today lol...
Soul to squeeze :D
Great playing!!! I believe the bass has passive pickups though. It is just a bass boost that required the 9v battery, this can be controlled with the third knob. The fourth knob is for passive tone and the top 2 knobs are volume for the p and j pickups respectively. Very similar to the ibanez GSR200. I think squier wanted to have a bass that rivaled the gsr200 with p/j pickups and a bass boost circuit in the $200 price range.

So if your battery went dead, you could still play (have sound) but just would not be able to use the bass boost? Or would a dying battery affect the overall circuit?
Them Crooked Vultures!!!! Totally underrated band I am utterly stumped as to why.
Gigantic sound for a short scale!
Great sounding
You're a very nice bassplayer
I get some serious neck dive while sitting and standing. Any idea on how to deal with this? Thick leather strap doesn't help really. Would lighter tuners change anything? Or replacing the strap bolt, for standing position? Any help much appreciated!
@OptoOcto I have found out other differences since I posted that. The other one I was talking about also has a rosewood board, passive instead of active, and stacked volume/tone knobs. Not to mention Duncan-designed pickups. The one with the maple board you're talking about is the Fender Modern Player Jaguar.
so if i wanted to replace the pick ups say with emg ones do they need to the active ones or passive ones being its an active bass boost?
Nice! Them Crooked Vultures! Made me happy :)
I liked as soon as I read the title.
I got this bass for $175. It was on sale on Musician's Friend.com and my local guitar center matched the price. It is $200 every day on either site. This is my first bass, and after setting it up, I am very happy with it.
I know this is an old video but right now im saving for a new bass. Im between this jaguar bass and the affinity SP bass, both from fender squier, any thoughts, what i would buy? Thanks!
soul to squeeze at the beginning !
I got this yesterday and it's my first bass (mine has a 3 tone sunburst wich is awesome). I fucking love it!
Them Crooked Vultures. Excellent choice
So I am a guitarist who does a lot of home studio work .... would you recommend this for a DI to get away from having to play my bass lines on the keyboard?
GIGANTIC!
hell yeah. Them Crooked Vultures and Pixies haha awesome dude.
Dude, what if I simply bridge the two poles of the 9V plug??? Will it work as passive???
oh my god, soul to squeeze is my favorite song
I was thinking about picking this up. Then I heard him play Them Crooked Vultures. Purchase acquired
Anyway i can get your rig setup you were using with this bass. I have this bass. Love it. But through my amp it sure doesnt sound like this. What amp? And any eq ir xondensor or?? Whatever you had it going through. Id love to get close to that sound.
I got one of these a few months ago. I don't really have any problems with it other than the active pickup makes it to where it don't work at all without a 9 volt battery. SX has their version of the jaguar bass and it's actually way more accurate to the original and it's cheaper too..and they have better colors.
Does this bass can work without the 9v battery? I mean, it says it has an active bass boost not saying that the both pickups are active, don't know... Kinda confusing though
Whats the song he played with a pick
Uhh, I don't think it's a 2-band eq. It's an active bass boost and a passive treble cut (which is the normal tone control you'd expect on a passive instrument).
i was trying to put some new knobs on this thing and it doesn't give you the option... does anyone know how to?
tha bottom end p bass pickup pick (!) is awesome
I love this bass. Just got one.
active or passive pickups? which is better and why?
GIGANTIC

Would it be possible to add Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder pick ups to this bass, they are passive. I have been searching the Internet all day. Any comments would be appreciated.
@Y2JMcMillan hey man, all good, the battery 'boosts' the signal of the bass, and ads to the EQ as well (ie adding more or less bass and treble). hope this helps :)
@nexusvision can you provide a little more of your experience on the necks and humidity ? Do ya live in a generally rainy area ? I've got several Squiers and demo'd quite a few before buying I notice the necks are hit or miss. but the ones I have tend to need truss adjustment every now and then ( bowing) and I'm in a dry climate .
Are the pickups really active???? As you said or is it the bass boost preamp?
great slap sound
This thing sounds awesome. I don't have a bass, but I've been looking at this and the sterling by music mansub ray4

ThatPunkJames I personally recommend the ray4, I have it and love it, the neck is comfortable, the tones are great, it's not too heavy for an active bass, just a great deal all in all.

Not active pickups. Active tone circuit, with passive pickups.

YES. Several participants at talkbass.com have done it, and shared the methodology. You just need to become a better researcher.

do they still sound good without the active shit on?
im so gonna buy this bass
Exactly - labor costs over there are a tiny fraction of US labor, even less than Mexico. That more than any other factor is why lower cost basses (from reputable companies like Fender, EBMM etc) are so good.
Love the Vintage Modified Series (I have the 70's Jazz bass and have been making some additional mods to it) they are truly great basses for the price. And while I hate to nitpick as it could just be the audio quality -does anyone after hearing this feel like the jazz pickup is pulling a lot of the weight? Just curious, maybe it's just me. If I buy this one the I'm already considering a Gotoh high mass bridge, either Nordstrand or Dimarzio pickups, and GHS pressure wound strings.
how does this bass compare to the older squier jag? the one with the duncan pickups.
What is the difference between this and the (more expensive) version with the block inlays?
I miss my Jaguar so much 😫
Enlighten me, does the 2 knobs are Bass and Treble, but it stated on the website that its a boost and tone.
Would this bass be good for playing all genres of music? Because me and a few friends are making a metal band, but we also want to have every kind of sound possible. please reply.
Does the basses input jack stick in well?
I'd like a comparison between this and the Fender Jaguar bass.
How long about does the battery last? And where can I get replacements?
I just bought my son one of these but the s/s version with a ampeg 110 amp not a bad starter combo for an 8yr kid imo. btw Indonesia are going ok they get heaps of cash off Australia hehe :)
Does anyone know why the red and sunburst options come in Basswood but the black one is made of Agathis?
@GrizrazRex
8 жыл бұрын
Transparent finishes on the red and sunburst; not so with the black, and thus the different wood. Agathis is less expensive.
any idea what strings (obviosly fender) come with the bass?
Sounds great. Bass boost is not really necessary (maybe if you use the jazz pickup only)
I have one of these on layaway. They are awesome.
What type of music do you think it fits? Would you say I could play a Norah Jones song, motown, and things like that? thanks!
I realilize that after watching this video. Thanks!
