Fantastic. That pickup really give you top end you dont get from the stock pickup. So you just got a pretty great bass for $500 after the mods. Cant beat that, especially after Fender raised the prices on their basses. These Squier basses are the best value on the market hands down.

Great to see you do this mod video. I'm looking to do a bass with two Musicman style pickups and this model could fit the bill - add the second pickup between this mid-body pickup and the bridge. Make them both wired for parallel/single/series options, using quad-coil MM pups so they are humbucking in all switched configs. Thanks, LowEndLobster!

Ooooh, great video Lobster!!! I'm in the middle of quite a similar mod project on an old and cheap Stingray copy by Stagg which I defretted and converted to string through myself earlier this year. Just waiting for my pickup to be delivered and will wire it in the very same way with a DPDT switch. One annoying little detail is that for some reason the Chinese guys at Stagg decided not to use a standard MM style sized humbucker but some sort of a soapbar sized one.

I know is a long time you don’t post any video. But today I am gonna buy a bass like that with that modification. Thanks to you basically. You inspired me a lot. I played this bass stock in a store. Loving the design the neck hating the pickup. Now after 2 years a guy is selling his bass modified with a MM kind of pickup. A took it as a sign. Quick note that you'll need a DPDT on-on-on switch for that purpose. Not all three way switches are such :)

Great video Lobster! I especially loved the disappearing/reappearing lobster claw at the beginning of the video. Sorry. Bad editing joke. Anyway, the MFD guts in a MM housing was a brilliant move! One thing - find a used drill press somewhere. I picked one up at a yard sale for cheap a few years ago and it has served me beautifully. As always - cheers!

@@LowEndLobster For mod work you don't need a full size one. There are a LOT of great benchtop presses these days; you could probably buy one at Harbor Freight new to get a feel for what you want, then when you wear that one out buy the one you actually want at higher quality - hard learned advice from one who's built a *lot* of labs/shops/studios for corporate bureaucrats and genius engineers alike. ;-) AMA lol Honestly, if anyone gets $500 loose to spend on tools, consider upgrading your rework tools. JBC tools has lower cost stations now (my ones at work ran the company like 1800 bucks because I'm me and I can demonstrate why that money is better spent on a good toolset than whatever else they were thinking) and you can pick up Metcals cheap cheap cheap if you like - but I moved away from Metcal because they SPRAY NOISE. They're basically the go to on rework productivity but between that and both a Fluke and Tek portable oscope that sprayed I just got in the habit of avoiding noisy/leaky tools whenever possible. Once JBC Tools came out swinging with really nice next generation rework tools, there was no competition - Metcal dropped all their prices and flooded the market with new tiers of products, much like guitar companies, actually. And the bonus is, you buy good stuff and you usually only have to buy it once. Any issues and if it is truly good stuff, the company takes care of any problems. I never had any issues with Metcal or JBC support and they were both always responsive.

@@misterbreakit2006 Most people are surprised at how much they use *any* kind of press or mill once they get one - I have a little 199 buck engraving gantry I use for small projects. :-) I have some lasers but after watching a few "random ebay laser" videos on you tube I'm afraid to hook up the ones I have until I can test the eye protection I have, unlabeled lasers can be ridiculously overpowered which is not as great a surprise as one might imagine and goggles are also suspect and should be tested *before* using on your own eyes. What I want to move up to in building out my next shop is a few sizes of generic load frames so I can do press work as well as maybe metal bending and other stuff in the same footprint by swapping out heads and fixturing...if I had the cash, I'd absolutely buy a Tormach multiaxis unit. When I was in the professional world, our site in Chandler got a fully loaded, like 32k USD setup and I got to go check it out. they could do everything you could think of on your regular shop equipment and rarely had to stick a finger in the thing. I was mad because it was actually the gear I'd spec'd out but the other site had the juice to actually get it signed off on, but I was also glad I was on good terms with the techs (one of them introduced me to a band Torche, which is pretty great) because that thing could make parts that would take a human days to tolerances most humans couldn't build to, myself included.

Awesome job. Continuity error found btw. Not gonna spoil it. On a different bar, I love this bass. Had so much fun modding it. I did a shielding right away as it was screaming like crazy on my rig. I went with the EMG passive pickups. Still haven't had time to swap the bridge and tuners so it still got a bit of neck dive. Only issue I've had so far is that the pickup route in the PG was too small for the EMGs. Had to cut and file to make it fit. Will add a 3 way switch later like you did.

that pickup sounds great! tempting to do it myself. i've alternatively found that simply putting flatwounds on with the stock pickup, along with the shorter scale, really makes this bass thump in a good p bassy way. i might just have to get a 2nd to have with rounds and a mfd pickup

Very good overall presentation and nice work on the mods. I must admit your skills are quite admirable and really efficient with clean results. If you ever get a hold of a Squier CV 50's P-Bass, I'd like to see U take a crack at it and do some useful mods on that instrument. Thank U!

Nice review. MFD pickups are so great! I like the finish on that Squier. Good looking bass. Hand drilling holes into chromed metal is not for the feint of heart! Like the big brass saddles on that bridge, and it' great that it dropped right in. Wilkinson makes a really nice vintage style bridge with brass saddles that would have looked great and sounded much better the the original bridge. I had some classic vibe basses that I modded for fun, and I loved the Wilkinson parts and pickups because they were such an excellent value. If you haven't tried the Wilkinson bass pickups; you should. I don't think there is any comparable pick up for the money. Slap a P or a set of J's in a Squier and it improves the sound a ton. The improvement in your project with the MGD is staggering. I think someone could make big money solely making replacement hardware for Squiers. Thanks for the interesting project and review.

I picked up one of these this weekend (went to GC to get it after Sam Ash told me it would be a year before they'd get one). The neck dive is absolutely a thing (I have to use a locking tuner or the front strap tends to pop off on me). I really like these mods and the way it sounds. I especially like the three way switch. It adds some definite versatility to the stock configuration.

Thanks Clint! I've heard mixed reports about the neck dive and honestly will attribute it to how much counterweight you have going on in the body (lighter body = more dive). That being said, the shape of the body also contributes. The hipshots definitely helped, but did not cure the dive like in some other basses.

@@LowEndLobster Yeah, it's the same issues as the Mockingbird body style from BC Rich. All the weight forward on the body just doesn't balance out the headstock as well.

Nice mod. Gives so much value to this bass. Single coil sounded the best to me. BTW I used to have this exact same battery-operated Black & Decker screwdriver/drill. Man you are a hero you still use it after so many years. I wonder how you don't get frustrated with the battery. I could barely screw a handful of screws before it got depleted. Eventually I got myself a new one (Spanish - "Steyer" or "Steyr") which came in a nice case with a couple of Lithium batteries (for the cost of about 2 of the B&D batteries) and the thing just works and works and works before it needs a recharge. The difference is abyssal. I've made 4 or 5 small and one mid-sized piece of furniture for my baby daughter and I only had to recharge one of the batteries once. The choke is much better too - you only need one hand on it to make a bit change.

Thank you! LOL I fackin hate this drill. It does the job when it's charged but man does it lose charge fast. You'll see in an upcoming mod video where I had to drill out the side jack of the Sire V3 (the jack cavity is separate from the control cavity, unlike on the V7 where it's all one cavity)

Another great video! Love these mod videos. I've done some modifying myself, which I guess all players have done. I play Hofners only, though, so not as much to choose from as the Fender stuff.

Quick tip for anyone who wants to shield cavities and connect together but don't have soldering iron access. Take a thin strip of your conducting copper tape and route it to your different cavities. Then remove a little of the backing at each end and put on other copper shielding. You've completed the circuite!

Your explanation probably makes sense to folk with any electrical aptitude, but do you think you could explain it so a fella like me could do it? Thank you kindly!

@@christophercobb8008 so the entire cavity for the electronics needs to be covered in The shielding. Then underneath each pickup needs to be covered. In order to ground each section together they must have a way to connect. What I did was cut a piece of tape long and thing. I threaded that piece between the pickup cavity and the electronics cavity. Then once in the small holes I removed a little of the backing from each end of the tape and connected the different cavities together by pressing the tape down underneath the pickups and electronics cavity. This was on a jazz bass. If you would have a single cavity instrument like a precision this wouldn’t be necessary.

Great video as always. Unfortunately for myself I purchased 2 of these bass’s, one gray, one black, the neck dive on both were beyond bad so I returned both of them. Yes, putting lightweight tuners on would have helped but I don’t think enough to make me happy. And yes, everyone’s mileage will differ as much as the difference in the weight of each individual bass, but in my case both the bass’s I purchased felt like they had way too much neck dive to be corrected or even helped with lightweight tuners. Other than the extremely bad neck dive I really did like these bass’s. Cheers, Davyo

They only sporadically update but they're usually pretty interesting videos from the CLFR shop and they publish often enough to keep turning up in my recommends. You're timing is pretty good. G&L just put up vid with Ed Friedland who was showing off his Fallout but with the L1000k wiring options on it. Really all you need on yours is another switch for OMG mode.

Extremely nice sounding with the modification. So basically what you summarized was that all you really needed to do to get it sounding good would have been to just replace the pickup or did you mean the pickup and switch?

First of all: very, VERY nice! Just found out about these basses and this Video is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you! One question though: I have a G&L L-2500. If I get a threeway switch and solder it up accordingly, could I also add a single coil mode to it? I always thoight the mfds are only capable of series/parallel and just the prospect of it is setting some gears in motion! Once again, thanks!

I played one of these finally and good lord is that the muddiest pickup I've heard. I auditioned it against an EB-3 and that had way more high end despite the humbucker being further towards the neck. This is in the G&L position! But everything else about the bass is awesome. I don't know why with cheaper humbucker basses they wire them in series. Nice to hear how a different pickup sounds in that position!

The definitive solution to neck dive is to change the strap button positions. Light tuners and a high mass bridge help but not nearly as much. The G&L pickups has an awesome sound. The wiring switch opened up a lot of options too

I'm thinking of picking this one up as a beginner bass I love the colour and the jaguar style. I've never modded a guitar before, but I may end up giving it a try and make this guy a beast. Do you think that, that would be worth the bother and that this could be a reliable main bass for years to come with a few tweaks or is the squier body/frame not worth the hassle. I just love that colour too much on that body and no other jags can get that blue. Sorry for the long message. Your vids are very chill and informative btw :)

That's exactly what I was thinking! I think I prefer this bass; not a big fan of the fallout body with the bridge in the middle of it, personally.

I modded my charcoal/Indian laurel specimen for less than $125. I wired a GFS pickup in parallel, put on a Gotoh 201 bridge, and Dunlop straplocks, with a 1/2" dowel to extend the upper horn straplock a bit. The exposed pole pieces give more of a Sting Ray vibe, and feeding it through a MXR M-80 gives it a ballpark Ray sound to boot. It was interesting to see Lobster's mods, especially since I have a thing for G&L J variants (I have a pair of American JB-2s with pickup mods and Hipshot Xtenders, and an empress-body JB left bone stock, save for straplocks, natch; 1964 "holy grail" J sound under 8 lbs in weight). The modded Jag is a great "designated beater," and will likely find its' way to a grandkid's hands soon enough.

Huge improvement! Are those licensed Hipshot as light as the USA? Wondering how much weight can be taken out of the head as I prefer a balanced instrument. But you got my eye with the review and mods! The bridge is sweet too :) Think I'd try a Bartolini MMC in there. Thanks for all you do!

I believe the difference in weight between the licensed ones and the USAs is super small (like 2-3 G). Glad you liked the vid :)

might slap in a turner multicoil pickup so i can get a switchable pbass mode in mine. i think the stainless steel mesh one would look cool with the shell pink. as for neckdive i was hoping a heavy bridge could be a good counterweight

Love the mod project. I bought one of these basses to mod as well and have been looking forward to this video. It didn't disappoint! I wanted to say though that a cordless screwdriver is a real quality of life improvement if you do this kind of work a lot. I got my DeWalt on sale for about $100. Several bass projects, many pickguard changes and several furniture and shelving assemblies later I have no idea how I lived without one for so long.

Killer! After doing the demo for Fender I had to get one myself, not sure if I’ll change out the electronics but a beefier string-thru bridge would certainly help. Any suggestions?

Thanks Pete! There's a lot of string thru bridge options for Fender style bridges (5 in line screw pattern). Honestly, I think the Fender American bridge would look pretty badass on this bass

Definitely a big improvement with the mods. My only question is how did you mount the MFD pickup into that blank pickup cover? That part was not mentioned. I like the shielding and I do the same thing but I always use the water based conductive shielding paint. It's so much easier to use than foil. The end result is almost like you created a medium scale G&L Kiloton. So once again, great job. But you really need to show how you mounted the pickup into that mounting ring. That's very important to anyone who is watching this and wants to make this modification themselves

Great question! I used foam. I removed the guts of the MFD from the original plastic housing and they fit pretty well in the blank MM housing. I used some bits of foam to hold them in place in the housing, and foam under the pickup to keep everything in place as well.

This was great.. the only thing I would of done is put in the Bass VI (. 024 to . 100)strings just using the top 2 and bottom 2 in either EADG tuning or do something like EABE

Great review, thanks! I am considering one of these since they are medium-scale like the Aria Pro II I've been playing since I bought it new in 1981. One of its pickups is dead though and they are a really odd size to change out. I tried having a custom one made by Armstrong in the UK but that did not work out. The color is wrong and the output is weak. My Aria bass is perfectly balanced which makes me a little worried about this one being a bit neck-heavy. Could you explain more about the pickup modification? Do you have a video on that? I am considering installing a Nordstrand Music Man style MM4.2 pickup which should fit without any mods. I do really like the sound of the one you Incorporated though, so more info would be helpful such as the model number. Is it a single coil? You didn't happen to record a video of how you fit it into the empty MM shell? 🤔 Damn, this bass looks fabulous without the pickguard! 💯

That's what I used. I removed the stock housing and crammed it into the MM style housing you see on the bass. Underneath is the same MFD that you'd find in an L1000. The MFD is a little smaller guts wise than the MM, so things fit well. I used some foam to secure the pickup guts in place in the housing.

I had an clf 2500 5 string for a while, it sounded incredible but the string were too tight together for my knuckles, so hopefully thar L pickup would give me a cheap ride in that direction... premium economy as the airlines call it today. I saw the g&l parts site also sells a 3 way switch,is that the one you used. Oh , the wiring diagram link was dead last time i checked. Did you add any caps, or just wirings?

What is the model number or name of the Albridge you used, and what 3 way switch did your use? And thanks for all the good videos for us less technical musicians.

Hey! Could you tell me by any chance if it would be possible to put a 30" Jaguar neck on this one?

It looked ace without the pickguard. almost G&L

Did you change the pickup cover for G & L pickup? Was that an easy swap?

Does a kickass style bridge ACTUALLY overlap or just ALMOST overlap? Great video either way. Might have swayed me away from getting a Gretsch Junior Jet II.

Those mods turned out great! Would you say the hardware upgrades made a big difference to the neck dive? I've had my Jag for a month or so now, and while I'm enjoying pretty much every aspect of it, the dive is really getting on my nerves. In the UK I'd be dropping almost double the retail for the bass on Ultralights and maybe a big old Babicz bridge; I wouldn't need it to cure the neck dive completely (my main bass is an 70s EB-3 after all, I know neck dive!), but it'd be great to know if you personally thought the difference was worth changing the parts on the whole.

Thank you! The tuners helped but didn't cure it. I have heard reports of inconsistent body weight in these models which may also impact the neck dive situation.

@@LowEndLobster Yeah, I think mine might be particularly light too. I was really into the idea of something medium-scale for D standard tuning (since I mostly play short scales) with a humbucker that I could mod the hell out of, but now I'm on the fence about maybe switching it out and looking for a deal on one of the short scale Sterlings... Ergonomics are pretty much my #1 for basses these days, so even if it's a quality build and sounds great, if it ain't comfortable to stand and play for 3+ hours then I might have to rethink things.

i was wishing i can make a sliding system for single humbucker like this ,or add another 2 p ,reverse p, j ,or soap bar ,north and south ,or made it 3 mm pickups ,

There's this huge steel wool roll often in frames. What do you use it for?

Can you fit some Precision bass pickups in this cavity ?

How hard was it to fit a G&L MFD pickup into the MM enclosure? Did you put the entire pickup in there or did you remove the MFD enclosure and just put the guts into the MM?

Great question Ryan! It was super easy. I removed the MFD pickup from the stock enclosure, put it in the MM enclosure, and popped some pickup foam on the sides to shore it up. That plus the foam underneath gives it plenty of support to stay in place. I could have probably hot glued it if I wanted to do some thing more permanent for the pickup

Would it be possible to do something that would add weight to the body in order to offset neck dive? Like attaching a metal plate to the back or something? Because otherwise this sounds pretty neat!

My friend attached fishing weights to the rear strap button of her Squier Mustang CV and she said that helped (plus a set of Hipshots).

we need more middle pickup basses in the world. everybody loves p basses but theres so little basses with the same pickup placement
