One of those rare songs that gives you a feeling.

Every time I hear this song, I have to have a slice of toast. When I was a little boy, I'd be getting ready for school eating breakfast, which was always toast. The radio would be playing as I ate breakfast, and this song always came on everyday around the time I was eating. And so, here's a "toast" to Squeeze. Thanks for the great song.

A truly iconic single in the UK when I lived there in the early 1980's, "Tempted" was composed by band member Chris Dillford as he rushed in a cab heading for Heathrow for the band's first continental tour. The Squeeze's two brilliant but quirky songwriters, Dillford and Glenn Tillbrook - along with the band's producer, the even more talented Elvis Costello - were considered by many British rock fans and critics at the time to be the successors to Lennon and MacCartney. While their reign as popmasters proved to be somewhat short-lived, their body of work was prodigious. Band member Paul Carrack sings the lead on "Tempted," backed up by Dillford, Tillbrook, and Costello. After this fetching Top Ten single was released, many Squeeze fans would throw toothbrushes in Rocky Horror-style onstage when Carrack sang the opening line: "I bought a toothbrush..."

My friend, Rick Berkley, was a great singer, and included this song in one of his sets. I think of Rickey every time I hear this wonderful song. RIP Rickey, we sure miss your face!❤

I play bass and play both of these songs. The words / tune for Tempted were written by Chris Difford and Clenn Tillbrook. Paul Carrack had replaced Squeeze piano player Jools Holland. Producer Elvis Costello suggested Carrack sing the song instead of Tillbrook. G.T. wanted to sing it, but once he heard Carrack... It was a no-brainer. Carrack wrote "How Long" about his bass player, who was thinking about quitting Ace. Bass player wisely stayed.

Ashes to Ashes has just reminded me what a brilliant song this is. Brings back so many memories of my favourite workplace in the early 80's 😪

This song was a real gem from the British band Squeeze. This new version sounds really good with digital mixing, mastering, and some new instrumentation put in. This was always a very.special song to a lot of people. Great stuff from the 80s.

This my mom and i’s friendship song. This has been our song since 2004. We decided that once we listened to it on her laptop after dinner one Thursday night in 2004. We were at our old house in echo mill at that time. I still remember what we had for dinner that night. It was spaghetti and warm breadsticks and salad. I also remember what she wore during dinner and for the song. It was her Calvin Klein overalls. After dinner i remember asking her if she had time to listen to our song before she went to work that night and she said yes. Now it’s one of greatest memories that my mom and i have made together. I will always cherish and hold that memory so dear to my heart. After that night it became our song and it still is to this very day weather we listen to it on the radio or on KZread. In fact her and i just listened to it on her phone as i walked her to her car when she went to meet her friends for dinner. Yes she has the KZread app on her phone. Thank god. Now her and i can always pull up our song on the KZread app anytime we want and relive the day when it became our song. Thank you so much for posting this. It means so much to my mom and i to have our song on here. I love you mom. Thank you so much for this amazing memory that you and i made together. It means so much to me. In fact it’s one of the greatest gifts that you have given to my heart.

The song was re-recorded by the band for the film "Reality Bites" and is called "Tempted '94" on the soundtrack. An amazing re-recording of the 1981 original. You have a good ear to notice the differences.

I came across this version first when looking for it here and could tell right away it wasn't the recording in my memory - the tracks were too pronounced. This is a better mix, but I still prefer the original vocal inflections.

DAMN Paul Carrick also sung "How Long" with Ace. His voice could carry a band.

I never knew this song came out in 1981. I always thought it sounded like something from the late 60s!

Saw the movie Air recently and had to listen to this one again.

I LOVED~this song when it came out! SQUEEZE had such a different sound at the time! :)

So in Australia most folk would know Sqeeze for "Cool For Cats". I discovered them on Album "45's Singles and Over" which has what you could say all the great Songs. Although after buying all their albums can't say that there was any bad ones. Another great band was The Nails and their 88 Lines about 44 Women, is so clever. Chek them out if you haven't , still sell their music via their website. Do a search have a listen.
