because people are insanely greedy on both sides of this, if the law favors homeowners they start screwing you out of your money and start slacking with the upkeep. If it favors the renter you get things like this. Bad people are always going to find some way to exploit good intentioned laws, so it's not so much that laws are supporting bad people it's we can't write good enough laws

Where are the laws to protect the property owners? Ask the squatters for proof like a deed, rent receipts, mortgage payments, tax bill, anything ..something to defend that it’s their property. The Burden of Proof should be on them. Just don’t let them get away with stealing someone else’s hard earned possession(s).

But don't worry! The government still demands for these property owners to pay their property taxes even thought the government refuses to help them. During the so called pandemic, the state govt allowed people to live rent free as long as they liked without fear of being evicted. Where was the government in protecting the rights of the property owners then?

Reducing rent requires either increasing supply, or decreasing demand. California is extremely adverse to increasing supply. Communities create NIMBY laws, and a wide range of permits and an environmental impact report is required for new construction. That makes it time consuming and expensive to increase supply. Many builders don't even bother. I suppose the good news is California's population is now decreasing. So maybe the problem will fix itself via decreased demand. "Why not mandate that rent for a single room be 1k?" Because you can't break the law of supply and demand. If you price the room below market value, you end up with a shortage. More people want the room than there are rooms, and only the first ones to show up get any rooms. Apply for any rent-controlled housing and you'll be put at the end of a waiting list years long. It doesn't solve the fundamental problem of there not being enough housing. "Why not give poor people subsidies so they can afford a 2k room for only 1k out of pocket?" That's what we tried with college loans. The schools just sucked up the extra money, resulting in prices increasing far faster than inflation. That 2k room will become 3k, to reflect the extra 1k subsidy poor people receive. Any "solution" which doesn't increase the supply of available housing will have unintended consequences like this.

If you have a shooting device or a couple you can have the owner write you an actual lease (short term) and then go in there and squat with the squaters legally. Whatever happen to breaking and entering law? If they have a fake lease it would have to have your original signature in it. That would be fraud. I suggest you call police and anyone one else involved Including bank and tell them you will be out of the house from this date to this date and have no I mentions of leasing to anyone. if it's occupied when u get back they broke in, entered and trespassed,, youll have proof u did no lease and were gone. . Tell lawyer, write a letter, notarized it, call police, tell everyone and anyone creditable. Make your mayor do his job in keeping tax paying citizens safe in their home.

They're doing this because the laws intended to protect tenants from bad landlords are so vague and lacking in protection for landlords, that they can be abused by bad "tenants" (aka squatters) against good "landlords" (including homeowners who never intended to rent out) to live there rent-free for years. If you're thinking the problem is rent is too high, to fix that you need to weaken the laws making it so difficult or impossible to build new housing (NIMBY, environmental impact reports, etc). The fundamental solution to high rents is to increase the supply of available housing. But a bunch of people want to have their cake and eat it too (want all those laws restricting new construction, but also want low rents).
