The pattern sees the player take a straight volley drop in to the front corner and then closing down the space as they look to get on the crosscourt and expose the open space at the back of the court.

LJ makes some important but not so obvious points. First, you need to be far up on the T to be able to cut off the cross court. Many amateurs position themselves too far behind the T to be able to intercept the anticipated cross court because they are concerned about getting passed and that is because they may not be quick enough to jump on the shot. They keep reinforcing this error every time they play so they never learn to trust the pattern. Second, this is part of a three-shot offense: 1. Deep in the back corner, 2. Low in the opposite front corner, 3. Deep in the previous back corner. This makes your opponent move the longest distance on the floor: the diagonal line spanning the back corner to the front corner. Also, LJ stresses the reward versus risk in executing this tactic: Sometimes you will misjudge your opponent who hits a straight drive instead of a cross court from the back corner, but the majority of the time he will hit a cross court. Over the course of a close match the percentages will be in your favor.

Must obviously be an excellent gluts workout - all that extension and lunging.
