    So Mark, do you remove all the unpollinated, deformed fruits/female flowers as you find them? Also, if you hand pollinate, do you make a point of utilizing several different male flowers in a morning of pollinating to increase the odds of success? Lastly, since new blossoms appear throughout the season, how often do you check and pollinate? Every couple days? Great info, thanks so much.

  • @iamorganicgardening

    @iamorganicgardening

    The unpollinated ones will die off on their own. Yes. One male flower per female bloom I do.. I check twice a week. Every Monday and Thursday. But if it gets real hot ou 3 times a week.. Hot is above 100 F degrees. THANKS

    I grow the squash as much for the blossoms as the fruit. Stuff them with ricotta and mozzarella and fry them up like tempura. They are the very best this way. Remember to pick often or the squash will get too big and pithy. If you don’t pick them they will stop setting flowers and possibly die.

    I have discovered that cucumber beetles like to hang out in the male flowers. It’s a great way to trap them. Look for the male flowers that have opened up at least once, the tip will be wispy and curled. The new unopened ones will not have any insects in them.

    YES, all of them.. You can plant later in the season to reduce pest. Just planting my seeds directly now in the soil for later Sept harvest. Plus grow a low growing cover crop with them or let some weeds grow up behind then so insects will feed on the weeds and the beneficial insects will feed on them. If your garden squash area is to clean there is no food are home for the beneficial insects. THANKS for asking
