Squaring up Fabric Yardage

Today I'm showing you how to square up your fabric to get that perfect cut for your quilt. When buying yardage the biggest hurdle is to make sure you are cutting on grain and not on the biased.

Perfect video. NO ONE ever shows dealing with a large amount of fabric and your tips were spot on. Just followed your tip on a 3 yard piece and it squared up perfectly. TY TY TY. I too wash, dry my fabrics firt because cotton shrinks! And I would never think of making an entire quilt without washing the fabrics first because the entire quilt is going to have to washed sooner or later! Again, thanks a million.

Thank you so much for showing how to square a large piece of fabric. I just got through making two pillow cases and was having that uneven lay of the fabric. I think this is what went wrong, not so square fabric. My technique was perfect but still I had to unpick twice. I did do a little cutting on the second unpick and it got better.

Thank you! That worked great. I've done quilting before and have squared up smaller pieces. The piece I'm using now is 2 yards. I think it really depends on the fabric how easy or difficult it can be to square up. I think I would literally pay someone to square up sheer slippery fabric. ... Lol I've done it myself and got so flustered that I had to stop and try again the next day. Took forever. Thanks again :)

Hi Barbara, when you fold the fabric selvage to selvage, you should be straight at the top. Then you just want to move those two top pieces back and forth until it lays straight at the bottom(fold). Your sides will most likely be uneven and those you can cut to get your straight edge. I'm not sure if drop cloth fabric is the same as the cotton quilting fabrics but it still should work the same way. Hope that helps. If you have any more questions, let me know.

Yes, it can work with any amount. I showed about 3 yards so you can see it can be done larger amounts. The object is to make sure your middle is straight and the rest should fall in. I also prewash all my fabrics. Hope that helps.

@@jeanlorraine-quiltasyougo-3725 thanks. It took me a lot of videos to find your tutorial. I came from garment sewing (mostly mask making for a year now) so I'm used to tossing all new fabrics from the store into washer and dryer for pre shrinking. I end up buying bigger pieces for quilt ideas as 1) I'm used to doing same for garment requirements 2) i buy extra as i am not following a pattern and technically making it up as I go 3) i want extra yardage in case I want to use it for another project and 4) sadly or maybe expectedly, I've turned into a fabric collector. I didn't have quilting fabrics 1 year ago ang now i have 6 ikea shelves worth of fabric. It may be smaller once i fold and organize them better. One other thing I find that i do differently is that I store/fold my fabrics back side out trying to preserve color and wearing on the right side.
