SQUARERULE FURNITURE - Making Walnut Stool

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The frame was slightly lowered from the original design to add a sense of openness.
It seems to be good for use in multiple spaces of the right size and weight.
The upper part and the corners of the legs are rounded to convey softness.

    I am not a skilled woodworker, but my trigonometry says the brass mounts can never pivot, unless the panel shrinks in one direction and expands in the other direction at the same time. Am I mistaken? Anyway, great video, fantastic work!

  • @squarerulefurniture

    @squarerulefurniture

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@RemonHuijts I am not sure in which direction the tree will stretch or shrink. It depends on the surrounding environment and humidity. However, the work was done so that the tree does not interfere with the contraction and expansion. Also, when walnut is finished with oil, it is stable and does not shrink or expand much. Thank you for your valuable opinion.

  • @RemonHuijts

    @RemonHuijts

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@squarerulefurniture Thank you for the reply! I have no experience with walnut, but like other woods it will probably shrink and expand only/mostly in one direction, across the grain, and not along the grain. But you have positioned the brass hardware in a way that it cannot absorb such movement. Imagine that the top panel shrinks: rotating the brass mounts cannot bring the screw holes any closer to each other, so the panel would split. It also interferes with expansion, but that is harder to explain without drawing pictures.

  • @squarerulefurniture

    @squarerulefurniture

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@RemonHuijts It doesn't stretch as much as you think. The size of the top plate is 320mm, and furniture larger than this should be installed with more durable hardware or those that fully respond to shrinkage and expansion. As mentioned earlier, the reason walnut is expensive is that it can be somewhat free from contraction and expansion if it is finished with oil. For this reason, the design or structure can be a little more drastic.

    Hi, I recently just graduated from highschool and got into my top furniture-making university after struggling so much with what career path I wanted to follow😅 For our first project we're making a stool very similar to this. Seeing you do all your joints mainly with machines makes me so jealous -- We have to use handsaws and chisels for everything -- Every time I put the tenon into the mortise it never fits, then I try to fix it and it just makes it worse😭 I'm the only one in my class whose never done woodworking before and everyone is SO fast so it's quite disheartening. I often think I made a mistake going against my parents and choosing this, but your videos really give me a reality I can aspire to reach for and achieve later down the line. (Also I really love dark woods so Walnut, along with Ebony and Bog Oak are a few of my favourites, shame that they're so scarce.) Anyways I hope to learn a lot from you, and thank you for these videos. I'll make sure I make my parents proud to tell their friend's, their daughter's a furniture maker ✊☺️✊

    Okay sorry, that comment ^, came out a lot longer than I thought but while I'm increasing your daily blue light intake for the day, what software were you using in the beginning? They're making us use only computer designing although I really loved drawing plans, elevations and end views on paper in school --but technology is the future so I get it.

    hello ! Congratulations on your college entrance! When I first made furniture, I made furniture with a saw, a chisel, and a hammer rather than using machines. Looking back at that time, it was holey, loose, and not very nice. I think the first tasks of everyone who makes furniture are like that. Speed doesn't matter. Your dreams and goals will motivate you. It will take a lot of effort and perseverance to prove it. I also admired someone who made furniture when I was young and tried and dreamed of following that person. Above all, safety is the first and the second is fun and passion. Move slowly towards your dream! From the beginning until now, I design and work only with SketchUp. Thank you for leaving a lot of questions ^^ Greetings from South Korea!

    What is the benefit of the circular saw based tenon machine vs the nice laguna band saw? Isn’t it harder to cut flat tenons that way?

  • @squarerulefurniture

    The tenon circular saw is easy to set and can work quickly. Laguna band saws are precise and powerful. The downside is sawdust bounces all over the place.

I've figured out that the design measurements are 12x12x17h (325x325x450h), would you mind sharing the dimensions of the legs, are they 1x1 (25x25) or 1.5x1.5 (38x38) or maybe 2x2 (50x50)?
