Squarebody Tow Truck!! Abandoned for 12 Years! Will the 6.2 Liter Chevrolet Diesel Run Again?!?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I found this tow truck almost a year ago on Facebook Marketplace and thought I needed a tow truck. Then along came Bernie and the squarebody got pushed into the weeds and forgotten about. Until now!! Let's see if we can get this thing to roll coal once again! This truck has been SOLD! As always, thanks for watching!

    You might consider using a rubber tipped air nozzle and shoot air into the glow plug hole on each cylinder to see where the air is going. That would tell you whether the head gasket is bad. A 6.2/6.5 is an indirect injection system, meaning the injector sprays fuel into a pre-chamber instead of right on top of the piston. The glow plug heats the prechamber, which gets the fuel to ignite and start the engine. This is also why the glow plugs are needed year round. Going back to the beginning of the video, the previous owner said the engine was locked up. Perhaps it was hydro-locked from coolant entering the combustion chamber from a blown head gasket. In the time the engine sat, the coolant seeped by the rings and let the engine spin. The 6.2/6.5 diesel wasn't a bad engine as long as they were not overloaded, had good glow plugs, and clean fuel. We had one in a 1 ton 4WD we used to pull around a tub grinder, which was WAY too much weight. After replacing a couple engines, we bought a GMC Brigadier with a L-10 Cummins, problem solved. The other 6.2s we had that weren't abused were pretty dependable. I still would't want one, though.... Great video! Mojo kind of reminds me of my 91 year old Dad, who up until a couple years ago was still tinkering on things.

    6.2’s were way better than the 6.5’s. I’ve had a few 6.2’s that made it over 300k. With modern diesel fuel lacking lubricity, adding used motor oil helps them tremendously. Yes, they were absolutely gutless, but they did get excellent fuel mileage. Manual transmissions behind them is rare. I just recently got rid of a ‘93 GMC Z71 that was a 5 speed. It got 24mpg. I only got rid of it because I couldn’t find a harmonic balancer.

    I often wonder if Deutz had the right idea when it came to preheating the F8L series diesels. Rather than a set of glow plugs, they used, essentially, fire to preheat the intake air. They had jets in the intake tubes that shot a flame in each tube to preheat the air and, in turn, the engine. Very effective providing you didn't use ether and blow out the intake tubes.

  • @Jacksonkellyfreak
    @Jacksonkellyfreak9 ай бұрын

    After a long day I finally got back to finish the video. What kills 6.2s is cracked main webbing and broken cranks. It'll either fly apart or lock up. Also I see you learned the lesson of never shooting ether onto hot glow plugs haha. Fortunately it was just an open hole, but it can blow intakes apart or on some of the Ford idi engines blow the injector cup out

    More Mojo! The local cattle buyer bought a 6.2 brand new . He was a character and would go to the curling club and it would idle while he played his game and had a few drinks. Someone asked him about that and he said he only shuts it off in the heated garage. He would go to an auction and it would idle all day while he bought cattle and be warm to go home. Which may have been 14-16 hours. When asked if he worried it would get stolen he said no. One winter and it was traded.

    The 5.7 DX block engine was plagued with problems until it was perfected in 1984. By then the American car buying public replaced them with the gasoline engines. So if you find a 1984 5.7 diesel, keep it. People claimed 50mpg in full size Oldsmobile cars.

    A 6.2 Detroit. The main downfall of them is they were designed to be ran extremely hard..not light use, they get carboned up too easy...and will not start in the winter. Gotta hand it to GM though, they were the only company to make diesels in-house until just recently. It made the trucks way more affordable vs. Ford or Dodge

    So true! The gasoline based 5.7 Olds diesel "unreliability" (read "horrible idea") did more to harm passenger car diesel sales in the US than cold weather start performance or lack of support. Expecting a gasoline engine to withstand the necessary compression ratios of diesel engines showed the silliness that made GM eventually file for bankruptcy.

    Pretty sure the timing chain jumped, that’s why it doesn’t have compression. Can hear all the compression coming out the intake valves. Enjoy the videos even when there’s failures, we all get stumped sometimes and chase down the wrong rabbit hole once and a while. Except Duff, he knew what rabbit hole you needed to go down, just couldn’t explain it. Haha!

    To add to your timing diagnosis, could the injection pump timing be 180 out? When they were turning crank to align dowel pin it would have to be two crank rotations to one injection pump rotation. It appeared they only did one rotation.

    Junkyard Digs recently posted a video of one with a 5.7 that they swapped with a 455 gasser. A while before that, they were in the background of Pole Barn Garage's video unsuccessfully trying to get it to run. They're turds, but there's a small group of people who love these GM V6 & V8s and still want the parts. Apparently the DX blocks are more desirable, but I'd imagine in a few more years parts will be unobtainium.

I'm almost to the end of the video now it's something that I learned while working on a 7-3 with a good buddy of mine The older diesels really don't like either very much what you can do instead that works really good is soak a rag and gasoline and choke the engine with the rag it has the same effect as either but works a hundred times better on those old diesels
