Square Enix to Shift to Multiplatform Strategy in Company Reboot - IGN Daily Fix

In today's Daily Fix:
Square Enix has announced a shift in strategy in relation to what platforms they release their games on. The company has reported an operating loss of nearly $52 million over the past fiscal year, despite launching two major entries in their marquee Final Fantasy franchise. 2023's Final Fantasy XVI and this year's Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth were both PlayStation 5 exclusives, which may have severely limited the number of copies they could sell. Square Enix also announced they will "aggressively purse" releasing games on Xbox and "Nintendo platforms." Nintendo has teased a Switch successor, but no release date has been set. In kind of related news, the original Red Dead Redemption may finally see a PC release. An update to the Rockstar PC gaming launcher site was revealed to make mention of the game and the Undead Nightmare expansion. The game was recently ported to the Switch and PS4, but has never seen an official PC release. And finally, a team of Helldivers 2 modders have flipped a lot of the assets in the game to a Clone Wars-era Star Wars theme, and the results look awesome. Keep an eye on Nexus Mods for when those assets become available.

AAA Games costs millions of dollars, and years to make, that even successful games like Spiderman 2 struggles to make profit. Exclusivity is nothing but hammering your own company

Their bet was between Sony’s up front exclusivity cash and sales FF16 and FF7 would produce the profits they wanted but surprisingly it seems that if they would of just put final fantasy on Xbox, PlayStation and PC in the first place they probably would of made a LOT more money in the long run. 🤦♂️

The simple truth is that gaming as a whole is down comparatively to 2020 to 2022. Any gaming company that's trying to replicate what they did in sales several years ago is going to pale in comparison. Combine that with inflation over the last year and you're going to see reduction in profit margins. Adjust accordingly

Console exclusivity is nonsensical at this point. It made sense back in the day. It even makes sense for Sony to get more money. But it makes no sense for the producer in this economy. Big games need big revenue. And that will not happen with exclusivity. Its about a quarter of their true potential finacially.

FFVII Remake and especially rebirth are incredible games, everyone should play them.
Console should be different with different mechanisms comparing to each consoles, but game exclusivity should to make profits and stop layoffs

making a game exclusive to 1 side. nowdays really dont play well. specially since console etc prices keep growing ppl dont wanna buy 1 for that 1 game they wanna play. so yeah. just mutiplatform all games and thats it. game become more the reason for money than the consoles.
Sony is about to lose big now that Square Enix is ditching their exclusivity deal for a multiplatform release + Heldivers 2 and Ghost of Tsushima is still delisted in 180+ territories

This probably could've been avoided if Square Enix had done a better job at advertising their games. That kind of mistake is what got Telltale shut down in the first place.

3:30 Except for mobile devices. The bad economy is affecting "the big three". Nintendo isn't immune. They are just getting by without all of the layoffs (unless you could the 100+ people they laid off earlier this year), by releasing so many WiiU ports, Remakes, and remasters. (I.E.: Metroid Prime Remastered, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, Pikmin 1, Pikmin 2, Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario, etc..Those are almost always a safe bet.

Finally after leaving other players in dark they decided to go multi-platform.
Square could actually stop overreaching itself as well. They are doing way too many projects simultaneously. Slow it down and get your pipeline right. Also actually market your games as well? Rebirth felt like it came out of nowhere.
Please no cloud versions on Switch
If just a few more go this route wouldnt need to be a reason for silly console war

It's not the 2000s anymore. Pursuing third party timed exclusivity deals doesn't work. It's always better to make money from more game sales than it is to make the same amount of money from an exclusivity payout as you want to grow mindshare as much as possible.

Sony PlayStation has only started to figure out in the last few years that the "war" they've been having with Xbox is not the war they thought it was. Xbox changed the parameters during the Xbox One and PS4 Era. They quickly discovered Xbox One was not able to match the PS4 in sales. So Microsoft Xbox changed their philosophy to be as inclusive as possible and release everything on PC as well as Xbox. PlayStation is playing catch up on that philosophy.
If kingdom hearts 4 comes out they will do better since there with disney
Hopefully this means we can get ff7r on switch 2 and xbox

Sorry to ruin your parade, but it won’t happen. PlayStation locked the ff7 trilogy and SE said that the 3rd entry will be the last PlayStation exclusive. Who knows, maybe in a far away future they port then to other consoles, but for now it’s only a PlayStation exclusive

They games are decent but overhyped and people not even support them like they claim. And as always most of the games that get support are Fortnite, cod, sports games. $500 consoles are insanely cheap right now considering how many years they have cost $500 compared to the inflation of everything else. $1000 for a console wouldn’t be unreasonable by today’s standards as long as it featured closer to mid-range PC specs rather than the low-end PC specs they generally launch with.

@SaltyToad00 You do know that Sony and Microsoft are industry friends?, Phil and Jim Ryan have been friends for 30 years, they don't hate each other (never have), the "console war" is a fanboy thing (not reality) in the industry, many devs have worked for both over the years and always hope each others games do well.
Games like Forspoken broke the bank, not PS exclusives. That game would have sold miserably on every platform. LOL! What can they fit on a Nintendo Switch...FF7 menus...LOL! Where is Brave Fencer Musashi? The last one came out in 1998 and we've been begging for a new one. The negative side of multiplatform games is subpar development to make sure games can play 'well enough' on all platforms. Bummer!

Blame The Spirits Within for that because it also caused Sakuguchi to resign and even though Final Fantasy 10 and Kingdom Hearts were massive hits they weren’t enough to save the company and they had to merge with Enix

This is a joke. If you read their actual financials, revenue on their 'hd games' was actually up pretty significantly. When discussing multiplatform, they were talking about their non-mainstream and mobile games.
