Spyderco was like: "Well if Benchmade is getting away with it, let's try it!" Edit: Only way I'm buying a Bodacious is if they do a sprint run of M4 or something else. I know S30V is good, I just know an M4 one is probably coming.

Steel composition is some "advanced" knife guy stuff to critique. Most of us won't use our knives hard enough to reach the breaking points on hardness, edge retention and corrosion resistance. But people critique it abyway because they want to know that the knife they have COULD perform at the highest level possible despite the fact that they would never be in those scenarios. BladeHQ has a page on their website that has a simplified chart that shows average steel performance. It is a good baseline to start off from but most metallurgists, such as the genius Larrin Thomas, will say its not accurate enough and there's many variables in the smiting process that affect a steel's true performance. But still its a neat way to visualize what to expect from a certain steel, but don't read it as law, just a loose guideline.

A good old fashioned battle video! I've always enjoyed these. And I agree that S30V remains a fantastic and not inexpensive steel.
One difference I noticed is that the spine of the blade protrudes more from the scales up by the pivot when closed on the shaman, whereas on the bodacious the spine is more or less flush. That protrusion can serve as a front flipper on the shaman, which is actually my preferred deployment for the shaman.
Congratulations on the new weighing scale!

The prices on the Shaman are high because Spyderco has to pay a guy full time to close each knife and document the level of mental anguish he suffered when “THE NUB” touched his finger. Which is why this fancy Nubless design should be cheaper. But it’s not because now they have to pay him workers comp due to a bad case of the Nubbin Finger. Get your facts right.

My pm2 had the wildest lock stick for the longest time but since breaking in, even with scale swaps has the smoothest action beating out caged bearings and button locks. All it took was daily use for about a year lol
You are 100% spot on about S30V. People love to complain without knowing what they are actually talking about.
Good morning metal complex. I heard that the shaman scales actually fit the Bodacious. I wondered why they made those scales so sharp too.
Is the spacing for the backspacer on both the same?
I got one on the way from knife joy! It was one of there monthly members deal for 180 bucks. S30v is one of my favorite steels.
I agree. I just picked up in person at GPKnives a Para3/Spy27, a Manix2 LW/Rex 45, and a Manix2 Lg./Cru-Wear. Couldn't convince myself to buy the Boda. The Manix2 LW is definitely getting AWT scales because the white ones are meh. Thanks for the comparison video! Cheers!
You're killing me dude, shaw-man not shay-man 😂, nice review buddy!
I have the dialex Jr with compression lock. It's about a decade old and the lock stick fades in and out.
Like you I have multiple Shaman’s. I paid 185 for 2 of mine and 202 for the M4 version. My big complaint on the shaman is the piece of metal that pops up when closed on the lock and the scales being extremely slick. The blade is legit tho. I’ve used mine camping and boating doing real work and it’s been solid. All that said this knife is very expensive… for both. Won’t be getting this one. But it is nice.
Will buy one when titanium scales come out as an aftermarket option
I've been buying folders for over 18 years and found the Bodacious handle a throwback to the old days along with a 2024 price tag ! Good review-"a good tool that costs too much."

S30V is a great steel to be sure. Honestly I cannot think of a steel that I would feel ok paying this price for. Feels like Spyderco is hedging their bets that the Bodacious will have mass appeal. Given that plus brand loyalty, Spyderco will be able to realize sales at the price they are asking. Has nothing to do with common materials, but name brand star power to make the sales.
@J0eMega

There’s definitely some steels I can see being justifiably high, such as damasteel. For example, the weknife vision, when you get it in that steel, goes from like $270 to $600+. However, S30V is by no means in that league of steel.
I really couldn’t agree with you more about the aftermarket scale makers being able to capitalize off this vanilla set of scales and pocket clip. I will be the first in line to OG when they announce an upgrade.
Love your singing voice 😍
Thanks MC! Does anyone know why Spyderco doesn’t include any sharpening choils? I am not a good sharpener, so that aspect keeps me away… TIA!

Sharpening choils can snag materials, cloth and rope being the worst. Spyderco leaves it to the user to add there own, choil if they so choose. As someone who doesnt like sharpening choils, on most knives, it’s a positive for me. I just got the maxace Orion for $170, full titanium and magnacut with amazing fit/finish/action. Obviously Chinese pricing but how USA companies like spyderco and Benchmade should respond to this is by making their products more competitively priced. If Kershaw can figure it out, then so can they
I’m pretty sure Sal said scales for the shaman should fit the bodacious.
After owning knives in s90v, 20cv/m390, s45vn, s35vn, k390, magnacut, and M4. I finally added a classic 940 to my collection. While I don't prefer it to say m4. I've realized that s30v still holds up. people love 20cv but hate s30v. I'd take s30v for a few dollars less. I also realized that while Benchmade overprices a lot of knives. I feel that the $200ish mark for the 940 is fair, given how well it performs and the warranty provided. I would also say that the new 940 in magnacut does not warrant an additional $50ish over the classic.
The Shaman has a perfect line , but in my opinion a small project flaw , the portion of the blade inside the handle is too short for such a large and heavy knife and this creates lateral play, perhaps in the bodacious they have improved this aspect ?
The Shaman is my favorite knife of all (regardless of brand) and I have no issue with S30V (it's a great steel and I'm so old I remember when it was "the new thing" and when, working with Gerber at the time, it was a BIG deal that they were using it on all their Military issue and high-end Portland made knives) but the price is INSANE to me for both the Shaman and the Bodacious for all the actual reasons it's insane (cost of manufacturing/dimensions of materials etc). I _want_ a Bodacious, to me it seems to have some aspects of the Manix (blade stock thickness) in the Shaman-like layout/handle design and THAT is an awesome combo IMO... but Spyderco is going NUTS with these prices like so many other knife companies, seemingly just because they can and because internet hipsters drive the prices up as knives have become like purses/shoes for men. It's ridiculous. Still an awesome looking knife and if it's a variation of the Shaman I know I'd love it's shape/design (and I DO use my knives for heavy things like hunting/backpacking/rafting/Search and Rescue work etc). I'm just hoping they come to their sense on pricing and they give us a K390 variant of both the Shama and the Bodacious and hell... the Manix 2/XL while they're at it. I love K390
All my spydercos have came perfect , perfect lockup perfect edge perfect finish , never been disappointed yet , can't say that about my microtechs and Benchmades. Getting a knife with terrible lockup and action breaks my heart , I am very picky about anything I purchase over $100 because of mistakes I have made

My 4th Spyderco (a S90V PM2) has a flaw in one of the liners. There is a small lead in mark on the edge. It is still a very functional knife and I'm going to put far worse marks on it than that.
I Love my Shaman’s, it is my favorite by Spyderco. Bodacious is ok i guess but for me personally it is just too much alike that maybe i don’t like it. I remember Eric saying he took some of the complaints of the Shaman which one was the choil, and changed the ergos of the scales reduced the weight some and there is bodacious… it is definitely blocky. Thanks for your vid MC
My issue with the steel choice is that s30v is, even in its own series, not the toughest steel. It's strange to me Spyderco only runs the Shaman, or this knife, with appropriate hard use steels very rarely.
love me an old steel like CPM-10V (1978) and CPM-15V (1990), but other steels do things more to my linking than s30v. also MXG clips are the best.
I bought a Bodacious after having in Hand I took it back and exchange it for a shaman ..Much Happier😀

Spyderco, can i please get either a fixed Cru-carta Shaman, or a backlock FRN Shaman,... for somewhere under 200?
The prices they charge for S30V when it's the _only_ option when MagnaCut is less expensive is where the problem lies.
I’ve wanted a Shaman for a while, and I finally grabbed one on sale for $230. I figured the price was only going to get worse.

After Covid19 everything goes up! Even basic necessities not just knives! What else can we do ???
Hogue is a much smaller maker and has plenty of s30v g10 or aluminum scaled options in the mid 100’s, and they do the axis lock the best.
The Bodacious is expensive, but it looks like a great knife.
Swap the scales and good to go!

I'm a huge fan of s30v and s35vn.
The Manix 2 is a better knife than both the Shaman and the Bodacious. The fact that the thumb hole is not entirely accessible is a real shortcomming of a knife that costs over $250.
That ti pocket clip might make it slightly lighter than a factory shaman, but negligible.

I like it but having a shaman already the bodacious doesn’t make sense to me. I do hope they make a mini bodacious (same size as a native 5).
crucible introduced 20CV into the knife market in the early 2000s but the original patent for Bohler M390 is actually from 1989. So the steel is even older than that 😂 Also, I am someone who prefers flat scales, they carry slimmer and feel normal to me. The shaman feels weird to me in a way I can't explain. And my dog stopped chewing on his bone and gave me a really weird look when you started singing 😂😂
“Left handed people can overpay too! “If your ambidextrous then get two and get a loan!
In college I remember getting 10 McDonald burgers for a dollar. Bought a hundred for the dorm. $165 in 2018 is now $206. So enough with the 165, use 206 as your inflation adjusted dollars.
I like the looks and the materials, but that price. Id get a flat g10 handled s30v manix 2 instead for $100 less. Better yet, my next purchase was and still probably is a cruwear manix 2 for less money as well. Nothing against s30v, I just wanna add a different steel to my collection.
I know you’ve mentioned a couple times that s30v has longer (or similar) edge retention compared to s35vn and 45vn, but I’ve been looking around to validate that claim… and that doesn’t seem to be the case. According to tests from both Knife Steel Nerds and Pete for Cedric & Ada, it looks like both s45vn & s35vn have significant increases in edge retention… in the case of Pete’s test of s45vn, nearly double the edge retention. Of course these tests are mostly done with production levels of heat treatment. Are you basing your claim off of what s30v can achieve at optimal custom treatments? If so, I’d think that s35/45vn would have increased performance under those conditions as well. Thoughts?

I've never even considered a Shaman, the price has never made sense in the slightest. It won't be any different for the Bodacious. It doesn't even make sense within their own product line. The Manix 2 is absolutely right alongside these knives in terms of build quality and design and magically costs a full 100 USD less with the exact same S30V and G10 with liners.
Why wouldn't they contour the scales makes no sense
great!! you have everyone believing that this is an over priced knife yet you own one now. bagging on spyderco in comparison to benchmade because of their "high prices". thats a little unfair. you just purchased the narrows, right? you also purchased 5 shamens which is fucking cool!! i will own 5 manix 2's. i have a minix 2 lw white in rex 45 to arriving any day now. this will be my second manix 2. anyways, one might assume that the bodacious runs on bearings out of the box! that is freaking amazing! to me that alone also being made in the usa, running on some skinny ass bronze washers by a company that you probably dont have to worry if the blade is properly heat treated... all this, to me puts the knife at a reasonable 200, okay, now lets add in the blade material and the geometry. i highly respect your opinion on everything that has to do with knives. im not over here smashing the keys gritting my teeth like the big knife w the strongest lock in the world knife people might do at times. im taking my time in typing this cause i do not want to sound like a know it all cause right here on your platform i most certainly do not. your opinion is last one i go to before i make a purchase. so, in making a comparison to the likes of benchmade, the whores of overpricing in this industry was a beat down, squash the spyder so to speak, LOL! i think i brought up some good points, thats it. thanks M.C. for expanding my knowledge of knives and cracking me up along the way.
Inflation in cost of goods, transportation, manufacturing and the rapid rises in minimum wage are creating wage compression that has to be addressed. Also, US knife makers have very bleak sales forecasts. They aren’t going to sell anywhere near the number of units as the last 4-5 years. They are raising the prices to cover the inflationary factors and the projected downturn in total units sold. 10x Shamans @ $200 is $2000 but if you need 10% year over year sales growth to survive and you know the most you will sell is 8 Shamans then they now cost $275
I have to think long and hard these days before I purchase a spyderco or Benchmade. Im mostly focusing my time on small fixed blades, they're much better value..

I really like the overall profile of the Bodacious. Same blade shape as the shaman but thinner. Shame it's laughably overpriced

My thing about the S30v is it is a fantastic steel and isn't cheap no particle steel is and I'm fairly certain it is more expensive to use than S35vn BUT there are decidedly more premium steels available at much lower prices within Spyderco's lineup and I don't really understand what they think this is bringing to the table to make it worth so much more than their other models Also I Don know why they didn't do the chamfering they did on the Shaman I'm sure aftermarket scales will have that but I think if they did that it would rival the ergos of the Shaman due to the more neutral shape

Everyone keeps bringing up Benchmade but compare this to the Super Freek with its M4 steel and layered and contoured G10 for $11 cheaper. Benchmade is the better value there which shows how overpriced the Bodacious is, especially given that the Super Freek is overpriced itself.
