Spy and Engineer Made TF2

Ойындар

G'day all MrPaladin here.
While this is not the ONLY thing that makes TF2 Unique and while I also know that Medic mains will come out of the woodwork to defend the core nature of their characters, or others will speak to the artwork, the characters the loadouts the map objectives or even the hats... always the damn hats.... you have to get into my shoes and come back in time with me to understand why I said what I said.

Still say Valve needs to toss a certain weapon I came up with into the game. That, or something similar: Death Dealer (Throwable Ace of Spades. Knife Replacement): Throwable, rechargeable (4 seconds). Target hit is Marked for Death for 7 seconds. -44% damage penalty. Cannot backstab. I mean, you mentioned "future subclasses," and I figure that Spy has been waiting long enough for a subclass of his own. One that's still "support" in design, but gives the Spy more of a reason to rely on his gun at medium range, as compared to relying on his knife at point-blank. It could give Informant builds more interactive play, rather than having said Informant sit under cloak for 99% of the game, only to come out for a desperation pick. It can change up just about every aspect of Spy's standard gameplay, all with the addition of a simple projectile-based card trick. Is it as good as a backstab? No, but it gives Spy a whole new trick to his arsenal, which is something that the Spy has been needing for quite a long time. Speaking of new tricks, here's an old concept of mine that can open up the Sapper slot for Spy: Dead Drop (Silver "Dead Ringer" Pocket Watch, Sapper Replacement): Throwable, rechargeable (20 seconds), cannot sap. On contact with environment, plays Dead Ringer noise. Can be thrown while cloaked. Deceptively strong, and exceptionally tricky, this little gadget was designed with one of Spy's strongest weapons in mind: Subterfuge. If someone's chasing you, and you wanna make a quick escape, you can throw this "Dead Ringer" off to the right, while you escape under cloak to the left. You can toss it behind someone, in order to get them to turn around for an easy backstab. You can distract enemies off the point, then pull a quick cap while they're not looking. You can confuse the enemy into thinking that there's more Spies on your team than normal, due to them *seeing* you use a regular cloak, but *hearing* that there's a Dead Ringer Spy somewhere. The possibilities for distraction and subterfuge are practically limitless. As for why the Dead Drop is in the Sapper slot, well... imagine if you're in a Casual match, and there's no Engineer. Exactly how useful is a Sapper going to be? It's gonna be dead weight, unless you wanna beg the enemy team to start building sentries and dispensers for you. As such, I feel like the Spy could expand the Sapper slot into being more of a "utility/tricks" slot, where some of his more gimmicky devices can be placed. This could open up unique devices to tamper with the Medic's healing beam, or blanket areas with smoke bombs, or even give the Spy his fabled Tranquilizer Darts back. If the enemy team has learned all of the Spy's tricks (and they most certainly have by now), then that's all the more reason to open up a whole new bag of them.

@D. Enzo I agree. Engineer n spy both have the most unique weapons, ways of doing their role effectively, and putting skill. For engi its giving him ways of defending or attacking no game couldve thought of. For spy its giving him ways of putting the risk in risk n reward situations. Might need to push back but dont risk losing all your buildings? Rescue ranger. Wanna try risking a pick on the medic and get out swiftly? Dead ringer or big earner.

I could only play on PS3 for many years before I got a PC, so it was vanilla TF2 and a few maps. Demoman and soldier were absurdly oppressive, pyro was essentially a meat shield in 3/4 circumstances on most maps, and trying to play spy was generally a nightmare, unless against inexperienced players. Pyro definitely got a much needed buff and, despite memes today, weapons and abilities that give them much more depth today. On ps3 you were good for spy checking, running into an enclosed area mindlessly, sometimes an uber and little else.

Considering that both are dependent on team play to be sucessfull, they definitly are. (Engi needs his team to push and pressure his enemies so they cant focus on his buildings. While spy needs his team to distract the enemy and to push after he gets the picks and makes his play). I'd argue even medic is less team dependent since even a mediocre team can be healed into being usefull.

I totally agree that Engineer and Spy are major things that separate TF2 from others. Things like Paladins or Overwatch just don't have a true comparison. In my opinion, the third biggest difference is player count. TF2 allows 12 v 12, and you can have multiples of the same class on the same team. Because of this, Spies can do their job and disguise, whereas in 6 v6 games they don't even have disguise mechanics because it wouldn't work. Anyone would immediately be able to tell they had an extra person on the team, especially if it was a duplicate. I think Overwatch allows duplicates but for the most part nobody does a duplicate unless they are doing a meme, but even then, in a 6 v 6 there isn't much room for memes or doing your own thing as a duplicate. Because TF2 allows 12 v 12, it completely changes the dynamic, and allows for Spy and Engineer to truly exist. Spies can cloak, Engineers can make more buildings and have more fun, and teams can be vastly different from game to game, and not just "Healer, tank, flank, damage, other dude" kinda deal. It could be all damage one day, a bunch of snipers the next, way too many Heavies, you never know. Plus, in a 12 v 12, there's rooms for newbies to be confused and walk around awkwardly. In a 12 v 12, there's rooms for memes and silliness. In a 12 v 12 there is plenty of room for mistakes. In a 6 v 6 if you are a newbie messing up, you could cripple the entire team. In a 6 v 6 if you are doing a meme, you could throw the game for the whole team. In a 6 v 6 if you are trying to relax but everyone else is being mega competitive, it's super stressful. In TF2 you can basically do whatever you feel like, whenever you feel like, and NOT ruin the entire game. You can have a dance party, be uber-competitve, chillax and just stroll around and do some damage here and there, whatever you want, because there is ROOM for it. Odds are, you are NOT going to be the reason the team loses, because there should be plenty of other players on your team. So... we can all thank the base 12 v 12 for allowing our beloved game to exist Tl;dr: The 12 v 12 allows Spy and Engineer to exist, and has allowed our entire unique TF2 culture to form.

As an old dude who played QWTF during it’s heyday too, I think you can expand to TF2 medic as well. I don’t think there was a healing class before the medic of QWTF, healing with an axe. In the expansion of healing classes, like in Battlefield, wasn’t more than just throwing med/health packs. The heal beam of TF2 is wholly unique as is the Uber. I think it’s okay is so important and unique that it separates TF2 as well. Honorable mention to pipes/stickies for demoman, I’m not sure if it came before or after Duke3D which had the same mechanic, but it could have been created in tandem since they both released in the tail end of 1996. Anyway thanks for the nostalgia trip with this video.

I also think that the placement and fast recharge of ammo packs (especially large ammo packs) don't really affect the 7 other classes except spy and engi who need them the most. In tf2 all classes have a lot of ammo and if they run out of ammo and killed someone while doing so, they can refill 50% of their ammo with that medium ammo box. Classes such as heavy or maybe pyro consume ammo for their primary the fastest, but due to that medium ammo pack running out of ammo isn't a common issue. Spy and engi on the other hand gain cloak and metal from those boxes which consumes _way_ faster. They rely on those boxes so no wonder why engi can set up a metal dispenser that provides metal over time or spy's ability to pick up ammo boxes while being invisible so he can take them from enemy territory. Health packs are a different story.

Some versions still have a player base but it’s mostly competitive pickups now, which is a real shame as I missed the pubs due to me being of the younger generation. I know a group of people recently updated the original Quakeworld TF and named it FortressOne, mostly the same but Soldier has laser grenades that act as the nail grenades but with less of a radius. Spot on with pointing out how influential Team Fortress was and how pivotal Engineer was in defining it. Mods such as Natural Selection wouldn’t have happened without the Engineer class paving the way.

I think it would be fair to praise TF2 for another 2 things that made it so much different and so much more fun: damage falloff and the heavy focus on "hit or miss" weapons. 1) Damage falloff may not be the absolute innovation yet it works just perfectly in TF2. It balances the combat in such a way that every character has got their own preferable range, and, the most important, it prevents rapid-fire weapons like miniguns, smgs and syringe guns from being absolutely OP. Like, look at most team shooters like CS, Valorant and so - you take two fast shots from a pistol or an assault rifle from a mile away and get killed. 2) And this leads us to the second genius and quite unique decision: hit or miss weapons. Many players might not realize it but this is exactly what makes combat in TF2 feel so different from other shooters where 90% players use only rapid-fire guns. It makes players' mindset and playstyle different and makes the impact from each shot a hundred times better. If you miss, you messed up, if you landed the shot you feel it and it's awesome. And again, all rapid-fire weapons in TF2 are greatly nerfed in one way or another which really shows how important it is. If not these two things, Heavies, smg snipers and scouts would absolutely dominate the game (kina funny that even in such hypothetical scenario scout is top tier...). Also, weirdly, this limitation makes the rapid-guns feel better as well in TF2. When you use them, you feel that it's a special kind and can feel it's power when your tracking is good unlike most shooters where such weapon is nothing special and you have to have strong tracking anyway.

Spy really is a counterpart to Engineer. An engineer focuses on keeping their own team reinforced and secure, while a Spy focuses on keeping the enemy separated and paranoid.

I think the most teamwork-based thing I experienced in gaming was Unreal Tournament's link gun. You could use its alt-fire to link to someone else with a link gun and super charge their link gun making it so WAY more damage and repair more hp on vehicles.

Medics giving infections and detpacks were already in Quakeworld TF. And back then you spychecked yourself by swinging your axe so teammates won't spycheck you, cause friendly fire was enabled ;) I do miss friendly fire from old school multiplayer shooters. It adds another complexity layer and teaches trigger discipline, also can immediately solve the spammy clusterfuck the TF2 is known for.

The topics mentioned make me want to bring up how much various Minecraft minigames and mods have affected the gaming landscape, including but not limited to FPS games. Things that come to mind are Minecraft Hunger Games (I feel like Fortnite is a more polished version of Minecraft Hunger Games), factory/industry mods that led to Factorio, FortressCraft Evolved, etc.

I was Pyro for several years... YOU are the guys who's make me a *good* Spy, and a *very good* Engineer (looking for your Spy-strats) with your videos. The spy mechanic's are so *1) out-of-law* & *2) perfect* refined...then even new battle-classes-styles-fps can't approach it. Its like parrallelism in-game. If you play TF2 for the first time, i think you gonna learn it pretty fast... Then you gonna die by a Spy....deguised to medic healing you 2second ago...*"OKKkk, this game is more complicated than he's lookin"*... An other point who's make TF2 so unique (for me) ; the game force you to coop in every situtation. You can't have point with only "Frags" like lot of game, of just ignore the other players to win. You need to manipulate your gameplay with your team. Every classes is balanced for cooperation with other classe on little details. (again, exception for Spy, who's he is -alone- with ennemy everytime). I hope you gonna talk about this one day (if is not already done). That why every time i see one of your Spy-f*H&^@-freacking-monster-gameplay video...I launch TF2 again. Thx to Valve for TF2, and creation of Spy/Engis.. Thx you for making visible what makes them so unique.

Just a friendly reminder about how "Generic FPS" does not mean "Bad FPS" For example, Halo is a generic FPS but it by no means a bad FPS (Halo 4 onwards maybe feel different but that's another story) COD is a super generic FPS and not all of its game instalments are by any means bad :)

I think part of why the other games failed to reproduce the dynamic of Tom Jones and Dell Conagher is because of the sheer number of separate characters. With dozens of fundamentally different characters and comparatively very small team sizes there's virtually no way to create a dynamic between two of them, cus you don't see them facing each other, like, ever. In Tf2, because there are 9 characters and teams are made of 12 people, it's a lot more common for any given duo to face each other. And part of why that's possible is because diversifying weapons gives you all the gameplay customisation you need without ever needing to release entirely new characters.

's true, Engie and Spy have different power levels and dynamics than OW. In OW, Torb is just whatever, barely even a class, but TF2 pushes are built or lost around whether the sentry gun's been taken out yet, with ubers, flanks, and of course Spy brought out to negate it. The respect for the sentry is much higher than Torb's turret, and while no class or role is 'mandatory' in TF2, Engie might as well be a role of his own.
