I think some commentors are anxious that inexperienced DIY folks will decide not to attempt making their own curtains after seeing this, they could buy their own sewing machine and with a little time attempt five or six sets for the same price. It's just important to know that this can be done frugally. Great suggestions underneath on how to.

Reflectix, Corroplast then reflectix layered with a polyester material underlying with nylon sewed together and abit of hot glue. Under $100 enough to do all the windows. Hyper insulated, customisable, moisture and mold resistant and just use cardboard and a Stanley knife to cut out the window shape..

I love discovering information on KZread which provide ideas and solutions, inspiration and practical knowledge. I'm planning my upcoming van conversion which will make my 2001 Ford 350 into a pretty basic camping van. I love sleeping out under the sky, I just can't take sleeping in a tent anymore. I've gotten as far as taking out two rows of passenger seats with one row remaining, not including driver and passenger seats. Its an awesome vehicle and so now I'm exploring window covering, insulation and bedding solutions. I really enjoyed your video for the ideas and methods demonstrated. Your shared experiences have saved me from a walloping headache! Thank you!!! I would like to diy as much as my capabilities allow in this venture. I sincerely appreciate the information you have been so kind to share. Thank you again.

Great video... thank you so much for examining the details of the various options... helps so much! I used to live in Montana and Idaho and I have a bunch of leftover "Warm Windows" insulated fabric... so I am going to make my own. :) After some research, I've learned that the reflectix option many people use has almost no insulative value. But the layered fabric insulation with air pockets and silver in between has fantastic insulation, so that's what I'm going to use, especially since I already have a lot of it. It still will be some work, but I don't think will be too tough. I love the idea they use of tabs with magnets in them, altho I have a caravan so I'm not sure there is metal around the windows... may have to do velcro, but that's okay. I will also do the roll up think probably with velcro ties. Thanks again.

I made mine out of insulation I had left over from insulating my van. I cut them to size and put material over them. I also included magnets in mine. They work great at keeping the van cool in summer and warm in the winter. The big downside is I can't roll them up and have to store them when not in use. I like the idea of having covers for the front and side windows. I hate having a black out curtain between the cab and driver/passenger seat, it's really annoying to me. I would just need to make these window covers are insulated and easy to roll up. I wouldn't want to end up with unwanted heat or cold.

Have a vw vanagon T3, bought the insulated curtain set for $250 USD for T4. Fit great and insulate great. Unfortunately since mine rely on suction cups they tend to fall off rather easily and even not seal in the light as good. I recommend a nice long tape of velcro to fix this issue. For those who are looking for a cheaper alternative of insulated curtains. Buy a thick roll of reflectix you can stick it on your window with velcro = best or add magnets. If you want you can sew more insulation into the back of the reflectix or even add a black material to have a stealth option.

They're lovely, but the problem I've got with them is that for this insane price, they still don't address the other needs of curtains for many van dwellers: ventilation without bugs, and privacy-with-light for daytime use. If there could somehow be a second layer of curtain which was a relatively opaque screen, they'd be ideal ... but I guess they'd also be $2400. I paid about three times that much for the whole van. :)

  • @uber2tuber

Two options for privacy with light for daytime use: 1) Tinted windows... they work great but people can see in at night 2) Perforated vinyl... ditto above, great during day but people can see in during night. So my solution is my dark tinted windows which I love... and I'm going to use the excellent Warm Windows multiple-layer insulated fabric and make my own covering for night time. And I will roll them up during the day and use velcro to keep them in place. Ymmv

I making a fitted one right now or a neighbors sprinter van. He only has one window at side back. Ive sewn all my life over 56 years so over time ive haorded and been given materials. I have pot holder material so putting that inside. What Im looking for is the 2 part magnet simililar to what you get on womens purses. Ive seen then on vans but dont know how the back part is put onto van. Glued or screwed. But he has very strong magnets or another purpose So Im going to make a small sew on pocket for them. I dont want to integrate into the fitted cover to not rip material and leave options to take off if we go with out options. However years ago my mother bought a ford utility van. All steel inside. It only had windows on back doors. I twas 1976 bicentineal so I got fabric for that. And yes all the women in our family own trucks and vans! I dont know where I found it or if original use. I found springs type curtain "rods. Just a coiled up spring with loop ends. they were just the right width. Bought 4. Made tabs to p and bottom in my material and it happend the metal structure had holes so did a washer bolt way of attaching the spring rods. I pushed them to the side where their was room to not block window when driving. People also use cafe rods but do one at top and bottom also. Make friends with a sewing person. In our small retirement town we do a lot of trading on labor. My partner sick now so they help mow and edge. Or if you cook. Make a meal. I hate cooking! Anything a woman needs help with. Build shelveds in her potting shed. Make a raised planter!

The insulative value of reflectix is almost zero.... actually 1.04 per their own information. They do well at REFLECTING UV light and might lower the inside temp a bit (but not much if your windows are already tinted), but not at insulating a van during heat or cold during day or night.

Maybe maybe not? Experience has shown me that people prioritize purchases that are important to them. Some people spend $1,200 going to burning man, while others buy curtains for their van. What you choose to spend money on is up to you. I simply review cool products and talk about my journey.

Before you spend your hard-earned money, take a look at a video with the title "Don't Believe the Hype: Window Shades for your Camper Van Conversion" which covers the matter with tests and data. Thank me later.

Hi! Is there a way to contact you ? If you are interested, if you fulfill some expectations, I might propose you an idea for a business partnership. It doesn’t require investment. It can be practiced during campaigns that can be short or longer at the pace one wants. Best.
