Sprinter Van Build Out, Insulation and Roof Fan Install - Weekend Camper Part 1

In this video I'm going to be insulating my new 2019 4x4 Sprinter Van and installing an exhaust fan for a weekend camper build out. I used my van for a lot of different things, moving machinery, doing side jobs, and hauling material. Because of that Im not doing a traditional sprinter conversion build. The first step to this build is to find a way to control the temperature inside the van when sleeping. To do this you'll need to install an exhaust fan and insulate the cabin. Thanks so much to my girlfriend Angela for helping with the headliner and Insulation, this job is way easier with a second set of hands.
For the insulation I chose to use Havelock wool. In my opinion, and after reading a bunch of articles comparing products (this one was really informative gnomadhome.com/van-build-insu... ) I decided Havelock wool is the best option when it comes to insulating a build like this. After spending some time on the phone with Havelock to understand the properties, they decided to sponsor this video. Thanks Havelock!

Nice job! In addition to the custom molded roof plastic parts, I highly recommend the interior blocking that Hein sells. No, it’s not cheap. But by gluing those interior blocks in on all four side of the vent, to the underside of the roof, you span your roof ribs. This means the thin roof won’t be vibrating and oil-canning as you drive. Then use those longer screws to mount the exterior flange like you did. Instead of just penetrating the thin roof steel, those same screws will go into the rot-proof plastic blocking. And when you attach whatever headliner you choose with the interior vent flange, you will not experience the sagging or screws pulling out. That is one “system” that keeps the water out for years to come and can be reused if the fan ever needs to be replaced. Well worth the money in my opinion after installing 2 and putting 14k miles on my 2019 170 Sprinter 4x4. I do wish I had added the flat aluminum strapping to the top of the exterior flange to distribute the screw head load on the plastic. I used pan head screws instead and covered it all with lap sealant. So far so good. One last recommendation I’d have. At 225lbs I started with plywood over a blanket, then noticed after cutting the fist hole in front that my forward roof section was bowed down or indented forming a low spot at my fan hole. Not good. Rain would have collected there at the sealant. After a few minutes with a 4x4 on a car Jack the roof was again crowned as it should be. I went online and found that others choose to span the roof rack channels on the strong edge on the roof with a length of 2x4 running front to rear on each side over the roof rack channels. Padding underneath. Then I spanned those side to side with 2x4’s, all flat, with plywood on top. Considering how many times I climbed up and down, that was cheap insurance against denting my roof.

So interesting, we’ll done. Maybe I missed the explanation for the gap between the top & bottom panels in the rear section tho - there was something about adding bungee cords but couldn’t they just be screwed to the ply? Seems odd to just leave a strip exposed & uninsulated like that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

You actually don't need to scuff up the paint for Windo weld. There is actually a primer 3M Single Step Primer, 08682 that you need to apply over the paint and on the plastic part that you want to glue to ensure the best adhesion

Not bad, brother. As a tradesman, I appreaciate going into a van build with the requirement/mindset of being able to strip out for the working week. haha. A good point to mention. Question; what was the dB reading post insulation? You stated it measured about 80dB pre-fitout, but didn't clarify a second reading. Cheers from Australia. Thanks mate.

I guess Im having trouble understanding why you needed that %60 trim ring, as it seems to really only benefit an install if you choose a spot to install intersecting one of hte roof ribs? But your spot chosen was flat all around....feels like the trim ring was just another layer in the sandwich, another place to leak? Not critisizing, just dont get what function it served. You're obviously handy enough as a builder to have cut out a 14x14 hole perfectly, so it wasnt needed for that either...please correct me if Im wrong.

Just gonna say you made a massive mistake with using that sort of insulation because any condensation is going to soak up into the insulation and cause damp and mold and believe me I know what I am talking about I build these vans for a living change them from vans into mobile homes

James - Indeed, insulation is a highly debated topic. We are six years in and over 10k vans insulated and we have had zero issues with mold, mildew and rust. We are partnered with over 50 professional van upfitters who use our insulation as well. Please see our site for information and research on the properties of wool insulation. Havelock Wool I don't use normal insulation either in the small cavities are you spray foam in the big ones are use board insulation with silver protection on either side and also bubble wrap on the area which touches the metal your stuff might work but I've never used it in in my experience normal household insulation tends to soak up the moisture and considering wool and normal insulation a pretty similar not in the way they are made just in the texture and the moisture exhaustion how much does it cost for a bag of your insulation

Havelock Wool I am thinking about changing my insulation to just spray foam considering it is so much cheaper and you will never have a problem with it
