SPRINT to Overnight long distance - 1st General Champion 2021 - PETER BOURS
Pigeon fanciers like to make things complicated. Always on the lookout for the miracle system, the special tricks of the trade or products that will once and for all make the difference. References are made to the "big money" that buys all the top birds and during the season - wet finger in the air - complaints are made that the wind is once again at a disadvantage.
Perhaps people that live in the area of a famous abbey can count on Divine intervention, but I doubt it. Because in the end pigeonsport is not that complicated at all. It all comes down to good pigeons. And good pigeons are found by starting from a strong base and tough selection after that. For that selection, only one criterion counts: results. Once in a while a fancier emerges that knows this and consequently manages to get a great records list without using lots of money, powders and pills or a complex system.
A fancier that doesn't need to light a candle, even though he lives near one of the most famous abbeys of Belgium. Peter Bours of Averbode is such a fancier. Being a teacher in Sports he doesn't have much time - school holidays excepted - for lots of frills. Unnecessary therefore to look for complicated systems on his loft. Despite the fact that basically the whole program from sprints to overnight long distance is practiced on his loft, there are no seperate sections for the different teams. Sprinters and endurance birds are found side by side. Peter is just as passionate about racing young birds as racing old ones. From the start of the season the young birds are not put in different teams. They all fly sprint, middle distance and great middle distance. In the end it is the basket that finds out what the talent of a particular bird is and not the pre-programmed preference of the fancier. In other words: the pigeons are selecting themselves. Peter: "It's possible I've ruined a lot of pigeons this way, but those that remain are good birds."
