This three-part series on Springfield Armory rifles, is absolutely superb, Evan. Learning of the Wyoming-connections that some artifacts have is especially enjoyable. 👍

As always, sir, a true pleasure to watch and listen to your presentations. I wish the museum would sit you down for an interview. It's as if a character from a Craig Johnson novel has come alive! What a delight. Thank you.

Thank you. I appreciate your support. In November of 2023, Craig Johnson came to Cheyenne and visited both the State Archives and the State Museum. I was able to give him a tour of our most recent firearms exhibit and talk about Wyoming history. He came off as a very nice guy, humble and unassuming. I haven't read his most recent Longmire book, but the Sheriff comes to Cheyenne to do research at the State Archives. Was a pleasure to meet him. Also in the next series of videos, I do one talking about my work with the firearms collection, some of my research successes and failures.

Apparently some of the old Krags may have been issued to some of the National Gaurds units during WWI. Had an old California uncle who came every year back to Northeastern Oklahoma at about the time the bluebirds arrived in spring. He had been drafted into the gaurd during the war and saw action in France. He returned with some mild .ung problems from gas exposure and skin problems on his legs that he attributed to the tight wraps around his lower legs. He said he was first issued an old krag but tossed it as quickly as he could and picked up a Springfield from the battlefield. He appraised the Springfield as a fine weapon. He would most probably have been with the Thunderbird Division. From his conversations they had little training and from what he said about the experiences possibly not that much discipline. The old man was illiterate but could still make his way like a homing pigeon from Merced, California to Northeastern Oklahoma every spring and back every fall. In his first action he was sent in with a split lip he received from a lieutenant after he had cracked the lieutenant with his mess kit. I do believe those wild farm boys and moonshiners fought well though. But I don't think I'd have wanted to have been an officer in charge of them. I knew that old man every summer from the time I was 3 and until his last trip home when I was a college sophomore. He was a character and I greatly miss him.

Great rifles. I think some may have seen use in Vietnam, maybe as snipers?
