Spring Stress, Deflection, & Buckling Stability | Spring Index & End Types | Active vs. Total Coils

LECTURE 15
At the end of the video, I report some results to questions posed in the problem statement that I do not explicitly work out in the video. There is one such item that I neglect to report: the shearing stress in the updated spring at solid height. For anyone who tried working this out and would like to check their work, this value would be 399.06ksi (ignoring for the time being whether or not there is any kind of material that would withstand that stress).

Sir, I cannot thank you enough. You are mechanical engineering GOD! You bring so much high quality content for us for free. It's unbelievable. I think the mechanical engineering community of the world should all come along and give you a big money prize for all the benefit you're doing to the world.

Since I know the God of the universe, I am aware how hopelessly short of the category of God I fall. But I am glad you found my work useful! You are very kind in your praise. I wouldn't turn down cash from the ME community if they wanted to send some, ha ha. Actually, I do have a patreon account if anyone wanted to pitch in! At 19:28 I'm pretty sure Table A-5 was meant to be said for where to find the Modulus of Rigidity. Just in case anyone got confused. Thanks for the videos Dr. Swanbom!

You are correct! I probably said the page number instead of the table number. Thanks for helping clear that up for the other viewers!

Min. 17:14...I always design helical spring for the purpose of stopping a descending car or counterweight beyond its normal limit of travel. When designing spring which Standard Specification I should use for Steel Springs? According to which code, the yielding strength achievable is 130-150ksi? You mean allowable by achievable? Thanks

I think you forgot to give your students the answer to part (h), the max stress at the solid length. Plugging in F_s in eq. (10-7) I get 399,2 ksi. As always, great lecture! Greetings from Uruguay!

HELLO SIR, IT WAS A GREAT LESSON AND THANK YOU FOR THAT, I HAVE A QUESTIONFOR YOU IN WHICH I AM HAVING PROBLEM, CAN WE FIND THE DISPLACEMENT OR DEFLECTION LIKE IF I APPLY A WEIGHT OF 100lb ON SPRING CAN WE FIND HOW MUCH IT WILL COMPRESS OH THAT MUCH OF LOAD ?OR CAN WE CALCULATE HOW MUCH LOAD WE NEED TO COMPRESS SPRING 1mm?? THIS QUESTOIN KEPT BUGGING ME FOR A LONG TIME?

Your equation would be correct for relating inside diameter to outside diameter. In this problem we are relating mean coil diameter to outer diameter.
